I click the sign out link in the top right and the screen refreshes but it doesn't go to the sign-in screen. It just reverts to the Home screen. Better there than elsewhere, but why doesn't it sign me out?
This has been happening for four or five days.

Can you let us know the machine and browser you're using? Are you using LibraryThing's English site or a non-English one. Have you had any other problems, or problems signing in and out on other websites?
3Linkmeister
Sure. Using a 2-year-old HP desktop, Win10, Microsoft Edge. Using the English librarything.com. No, I've had no trouble signing in and out on other sites.
Just tried it again (3/19, 11:46 HST) and it still takes me to the Home page rather than the sign-in page.

Happening to me too. Multiple PCs, all running Windows 10 and Google Chrome (all latest versions). Started a couple of days ago...

Okay, I'm baffled. I've raised this with all five devs.

>3 Linkmeister: Open a new private window in Edge (ctrl+shift+n) then close the non private window(s) and in the private window login to LT and then logout from that window. What happens?

>1 Linkmeister: >4 LeReynard: Which page are you viewing, on LibraryThing, when you try to click the "Sign out" link? If you clear your browser's cache/cookies, does it still fail to log you out (after you've logged back in)? Do you have any browser add-ons or extensions, at all?
8kristilabrie
I'm unable to reproduce in my kristi_test_02 account, in Win10 / latest version of Edge. I'm able to sign out from multiple pages, saving password in browser, etc.

>6 Taliesien: When I do that it works properly. IIn the private window I go to the "Your Books" section, search for something, click "Sign Out" and it takes me to the Sign-In page.

>7 kristilabrie: The LibraryThing Home page, the Your Books page, and search results from Your Books. Browser cache is cleared without any impact - still no logout. Browser add ins include Ghostery, AdBlock Plus and Privacy Badger. Deleting all cookies from within Chrome logs me out and then I have to go through the "I am not a robot" selection routine the next time I login. Logout does not work after that login either...

>9 Linkmeister: That means it's a browser issue on your end. The private window option is similar to "safe mode" where third party browser extensions/add ons are disabled by default (unless you override that) and you aren't using your stored cache/cookies.
Steps I would recommend (in order of debugging) followed by testing the logout each time
1. Clear just your LT cookies
2. Empty browser cache w/hard refresh
3. Disable any/all extensions and re-enable one at a time

>11 Taliesien: After some more experimentation I found that the extension causing the problem (at least on my browser) was "HTTPS Everywhere" (version 2022.5.24). If I disable this extension, the Sign Out function works correctly. If this extension is enabled, Sign Out does not work and the page just refreshes without signing out.
14Taliesien
>13 LeReynard: Well the good news is you don't need that extension (it's discontinued anyway) because the functionality it provided is supported in most browsers today. :)

>11 Taliesien: I cleared all caches and cookies (I couldn't sign in at Ticketmaster to see the Bonnie Raitt ticket I've got for next week), but it still didn't take either there or at LT. Then I switched to Chrome from Edge and it works. I'll look at my extensions and fiddle with them.
Edited to Add: Following your comment at #13, I removed HTTPS everywhere and that let me sign out from LT.
Thanks.

Thanks for the note. This is extremely interesting. conceptDawg was working through some ideas on this, and I suspect this is the key clue. Maybe the signout process hits a non-HTTP page? Asking him to respond here later.

Bumping this. Contacted by a member who is having this problem, using AVG Secure Browser, and have advised him to take the steps outlined above as a workaround, while waiting for a resolution of the underlying issue.

Reopening this for https://www.librarything.com/topic/350465, and maybe >16 timspalding: has something to it? I'll note this for conceptDawg.

>15 Linkmeister: Disabling HTTPS Everywhere also solved my sign-out problem in Firefox (versions 110 and 112 on a MacBook Air & iMac).

>19 michelemontague: Yes, I did that and it solved the problem. Thank you.

Closing because I think this is completely caused by HTTPSEverywhere, which you no longer need for LT because we force all connections to HTTPS now anyway.
Let me know if we need to reopen this.
