I love that he’s a fine writer AND a plot-driven storyteller. Would appreciate similar style recommendations. Thanks.

I prefer his early stuff--CHILD IN TIME and CEMENT GARDEN, for instance--but I also loved BLACK DOGS, with its notion of everyday reality brushed by the sacred.

I gave up on him after Saturday. Awful book. Not read anything by him since.

However, I continue to read Sebastian Faulks, another middlebrow English writer. There's also Kazuo Ishiguro, who is very good. Can als recommend Rose Tremain. Also, the late Iain Banks.
