I don't remember much from this book, so apologies if it's vague.
I do recall that there were nuns (probably) taking care of girls and they were all living in the gym of an abandoned school (?). All the girls wore red, and I recall them whispering to each other at night when they weren't supposed to be awake. At one point I think they had an escape plan, and I'm sure one of the girls removed a piece from a toilet and flooded the bathroom as a distraction. At some point the shifts for the women taking care of them changed.
I'm certain this isn't the Handmaid's tale, despite the similarity with the red dresses.
As I was writing, another piece of story came to mind, though I'm not sure if it's related. In this piece, the older girls were in charge of taking care of babies, who they were led to believe were grown in a garden. It was an honor to be chosen for this, and all the girls aspired for it. At one point, one of the girls escaped. She was found and introduced to modern society, eventually having a family of her own. I don't remember if she went back for any of the other girls, but it is possible.

>1 waffle231: Are you sure it's not The Handmaid's Tale? Your first paragraph sounds exactly like it, although the second paragraph sounds like a different book.

Sure it wasn't a My Story Animated video from Youtube? There's one almost exactly like that.

I'm almost certain it's not the handmaid's tale, and yeah the second part might be a msa video. But I'm absolutely sure the first half is a book.

>2 amanda4242: I'm fairly certain I read this well before I read the handmaid's tale, but maybe I should reread that just to be sure.

>5 waffle231: Being housed in a gym, whispering in the night, and sabotaging toilets are all in The Handmaid's Tale.

>6 amanda4242: Interesting, I don't remember those scenes being in it at all. It most likely is The Handmaid's Tale, then. Thanks!
