In the last years we had wonderful holidays but with us it is nice, too. Therefore a few pictures of our area.
I need some pleasant distraction since last year did not end well.
I hope you had a good slide into 2023 - I hope you all stay healthy and the New Year will be a happy one for all of us.
Hi everybody, my Name is Thomas, I am 61 years young and I live in a small town in northern Baden Wuerttemberg, Germany.
2022 was again a good reading year since I am part of this group - 182 finished books.
This is my 11th year in this awesome group, and every year is going better and better with books and friends.
My library grows and grows, as I can hardly bring myself to throw away a book - it's a good thing that eBooks hardly take up any space on the shelf...
For my good resolutions for 2023, I have a quote from Susanne Fischer:
And again, two resolutions for the new year.
First: Use less swear words, because it makes me unsympathetic. The drastic cursing doesn't suit an educated lady with a high school diploma either.
Second: Don't give a damn about what others think I should or should not do. Why did I become so old? To be educated? After all, I have a shitty high school diploma!

And there were books...
1. Kaiserstuhl by Brigitte Glaser
German title translated: (No translation - Kaiserstuhl is the name of a region near Freiburg)
Genre: Historical Fiction
Reading Reason: Stock
Medium: Paper Book
A wonderful book about life and love in the Kaiserstuhl region after WWII.
A wine merchant tries to rebuild her business and her life in Freiburg, but her past won't let her go. Before the war, she was engaged to a Frenchman who she thought was murdered by the Gestapo.
Old Nazi bigwigs still have influence. Her son, whom she had found as a toddler in a bombed house, is slowly recovering the memory of his mother.
DeGaulle and Adenauer want to reactivate the French-German friendship.
A multi-layered and beautifully written novel.
I bought the book at a reading by the author and had it signed and have not regretted it.

German title translated: Odyssey 2010 - the year we make contact
Genre: Science Fiction
Reading Reason: Movie
Medium: eBook
Now I want to read the whole series.
This book does not continue the first volume, but the movie. Therefore, you should have seen it to understand everything - it's worth it.
A rescue mission to the abandoned Discovery is underway, but there is competition.
Another book whose age is barely noticeable.

German title translated: 2061 Odyssee three
Genre: Science Fiction

The next one.
Not the best book in the series. A trip to Halley's comet has to be aborted for a rescue mission.
The actual topic of extraterrestrial intelligence promoting life in the universe is hardly mentioned.
But the science underlying the technology described is vividly explained.

German title translated: 2061 3001 – The final Odyssey
Genre: Science Fiction
Reading Reason: Movie
Medium: eBook
The last one.
This book was not really necessary. A lot of things don't fit together.
This time Frank Poole is the main character and has to save the earth, together with HALman.
It took 1,000 years for the obelisk to send the state of Earth's civilization to headquarters and receive the instructions.
Why did the ghost of David Bowman make it in real time back then?
It was pleasant to read, but no more...
51PaulCranswick
Wishing you a lovely weekend, Thomas.
52SirThomas
Thank you, Paul, the same to you.
Friday was a holiday (Three Kings) and we enjoyed the rest and waited for the carolers.
This is a group of children and young people who go from house to house, collecting donations and placing a blessing over the front door.
For lunch we cooked delicious porcini risotto, where I was allowed to help a little and did the cutting work. Cooking is fun...
Yesterday was a sunny day and we made 2 big walks, in between came the carolers.
Due to CORONA they have recruitment problems and didn't make it yesterday - they still got a bag of sweets in addition to the donation ;-).
Today it rains all day and I have time to read and LT.

8. Kindheitsroman by Gerhard Henschel
German title translated: Childhood novel
Genre: Fiction
Reading Reason: Review in newspaper
Medium: eBook
The childhood years of Martin Schlosser in the 60s in Germany.
Funny, sad, adventurous. Since the protagonist is only a little younger than me, many memories of the time came back to me as well - series, movies, books, commercials....
The book is divided into many small snippets, reading it is like looking at an old photo album.
It was fun, but I couldn't really get into the narrative style.

German title translated: Dinner for One - Killer for Five
Genre: Crime Fiction
Reading Reason: Stock
Medium: eBook
In Germany, there is a cult scetch that is broadcast every New Year's Eve on many channels - Dinner for One with May Warden and Freddie Frinton.
Miss Sophie celebrates her 90th birthday with 4 close friends who have unfortunately already passed away, so her butler James takes over the roles of the guests - and their drinks.
The book tells the back story of how the 4 died, with Miss Sophie and James also involved....

German title translated: Winter recipes from the collective (Wow, a german title that fits...)
Genre: Poetry
Reading Reason: Nobel Prize
Medium: eBook
Unfortunately, I have no connection with poetry, but I would like to expand my Nobel Prize list. Therefore I have ventured to this book.
Beautiful poetry and beautifully designed, first the respective text in the original, then in a very good translation (as far as I can judge).

German title translated: Summit enjoyment: My Allgäu cuisine
Genre: Cookbook
Reading Reason: Author
Medium: Paper Book
A cookbook, but what a cookbook!
Simon Schlachter describes how he became a top chef and how he planned and designed his restaurant and hotel.
Local history is also mentioned, King Ludwig II wanted to build another fairy tale castle here....
Wonderful recipes (which can be recreated if you know how to cook) with wonderful pictures.
My rating may be somewhat influenced by the wonderful memories of our stay there....

Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: Newspaper
Medium: eBook
A mortician avenges her murdered husband.

German title translated: Under the clouds: my Germany trip to the highest mountains of all 16 German states
Genre: Non Fiction
Reading Reason: Rummage at the bookstore
Medium: Paper book
Achim Bogdahn is a radio moderator and has set out to climb the highest mountains in all 16 German states. From 32.50 - 2,962 m. Sometimes the search for the mountain took longer than the actual climb.
As an additional challenge, he traveled only by train and public transportation and stayed overnight with private individuals.
On each ascent he was accompanied by a celebrity from the respective state - sportsman, politician, actor,...
Nice anecdotes and a lot of information - pleasant to read.

I can't remember which thread I was reading , but you mention all the names you go by: Sir Thomas, Thomas, Tom and then a fourth one??? I, too, have many names: Kim, Kimberly, Berly (here on LT), Kimmers. My teacher in 3rd grade used to call my Kimberly J. Snerd. No idea why, but I liked it. LOL. There were 3 Kims in my class.
101EllaTim
Hi Thomas!
>93 SirThomas: Liked your review. Putting it on the TBR-list. Hope it can be found here. Good books should be available, but they aren’t always. I see that it has been translated into Dutch, and my library has it.

>100 Berly: Kimberly J. Snerd sounds really good ;-).
I go by the names Thomas, Tom and Tommy. Theo came about from a messy abbreviation on a chalkboard to record bowling results. The clerk wanted to write Tho, slipped a bit and someone said that looks like Theo.
After we had 2 Thomas's in the club, it stuck with Theo for me....
For my LT name I wanted to choose something related to books. In my student days, a friend and I wrote a few short stories that we read to each other and our friends. With enough alcohol, they were bearable.
We had described each other as investigators, the person modeled on me was called Sir Thomas....
From today's point of view it is good that the stories got lost in the depths of time.

It's really not always understandable according to which criteria books are translated or not.
Even the authors don't always agree, but they can't influence much themselves. I asked Brigitte Glaser about an English translation of Kaiserstuhl and she confirmed this.

15. Kleine Grausamkeiten / Little Cruelties by Liz Nugent
German title translated: Little Cruelties
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: Stock
Medium: eBook
Three brothers, each has his problems, which are also caused by his brothers. The parents also contribute their part. Each of the brothers tells the story from his point of view, in the end one is dead.
A suspenseful story about a dysfunctional family and the darker side of fame.
Less a thriller than a psychogram, but still worth reading.

German title translated: The lost Paradise
Genre: Historical Fiction
Reading Reason: Nobel Price
Medium: eBook
Another book on my journey through the Nobel Prize winners.
The story of a boy who is sold out of poverty to a rich merchant and tries to cope.
A deep insight into life in East Africa at the end of the 19th century.
A book full of hope and hopelessness.
Unfortunately, I couldn't really get into the book.

Thank you very much, Jennifer.
We like to try new things and enjoy good food.
At home we made savoy cabbage chips at the weekend - yummy!
Ingredients for three trays:
6 savoy cabbage leaves
2 tablespoons oil (for example olive oil)
Juice of half an organic lemon
1 tsp paprika powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
According to taste
2 tbsp yeast flakes
Chilli powder
1 tbsp tahini
Wash the savoy cabbage leaves and dry them well with a kitchen towel.
Remove the hard cabbage ribs and cut the leaves into rectangular bite-sized pieces.
Put the pieces in a large bowl.
Mix all the spices and the oil in a container to make a marinade.
Add the marinade to the savoy cabbage in the bowl and massage well with your hands so that all the pieces are marinated evenly.
Lay the savoy cabbage pieces out on the trays. Make sure they do not overlap.
Put the trays in the oven for 40 minutes at 120 degrees Celsius. Check the chips regularly so that they don't burn. If necessary, change the trays after 15 minutes so that the bottom one goes on top. Repeat this after another 15 minutes so that each tray bakes once on the top shelf. This way all the chips will be nice and even.
The chips are ready when the savoy cabbage pieces are completely dry and can be broken easily. Take the trays out of the oven and leave the chips to cool.

17. Eine Frage der Chemie / Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
German title translated: A question of chemistry
Genre: Historical Fiction
Reading Reason: BB 75 books challenge (Thank you, EllaTim)
Medium: eBook
The book is terrible, beautiful, sad, funny - wonderful.
A highly intelligent woman tries to make her way in the 60s.
She has to overcome many obstacles and sometimes fails, but she stays on her path.
A HB pencil in her hair is not just a fashion gag, but has a very serious background.
One little detail I liked a lot - a priest reading Mad, a magazine I used to love.
The ending is a bit saccharine, but still fitting.
Absolutely recommended reading!

German title translated: The Bookshop of Primrose Hill - I like the original title much more
Genre: Historical Fiction
Reading Reason: BB 75 books challenge (Thank you, Lori - thornton37814)
Medium: eBook
And another BB, actually for the librarian spy, but my library didn't have that.
I enjoyed this one very much too.
A young woman moves from the country to London to live with a friend of her late mother at the beginning of WWII.
Having no references, she starts working in a bookshop to get a letter of recommendation for a "proper" position.
Step by step she learns about the world of books and falls in love (not only) with reading.
She grows spiritually and mentally and also helps as a volunteer on bombing nights.
A book about my favourites - books and bookshops.
Sometimes I laughed, sometimes I had tears in my eyes, a beautiful book.

I have been sneaking around Bernhard Aichner's books for a while, but never could convince myself to read them. After your review I will keep postponing it.
I enjoyed Eine Frage der Chemie a lot and I am glad you liked it, too. It has got just everything - fun moments, sad moments, moments which make you angry, touching moments.... Insider info from a bookseller: They are handling Die Postkarte by Anne Berest as the new "Frage der Chemie". I have just received the ARC and will start to read it today - I will let you know if they are right.
Oooh, don't remind me... I still haven't read Gurnah! Or Ernaux! Or so many other Nobel Prize Winners...

22. Fräulein Gold: Schatten und Licht by Anne Stern
German title translated: Miss Gold: Shadow and Light
Genre: Crime Fiction
Reading Reason: BB 75 books challenge (Thank you again, Barbara (Ameis1e1))
Medium: eBook
Berlin in the 1920s.
Hulda Gold is a midwife and mainly works in the poorer areas. When a neighbour of one of her patients is found dead in a canal, she becomes curious.
The police, in the person of Karl North, also investigate and their paths cross.
Both have to bear the burden of their past.
The author paints a very atmospheric picture of Berlin after the First World War in a difficult time, but also a time of new beginnings. With hatred of Jews spreading and the Nazis preparing to take power.
Exciting and atmospheric - a pleasure to read.

>142 SirThomas: I am a little bit biased about the author - because one of her friends came controlling if we have got the book in stock in our bookstore. ;-)

and there were books...
28. Die geflohene Geschichte by Kate Kowalski
German title translated: The escaped story
Genre: Crime Fantasy
Reading Reason: Rummage at the library
Medium: eBook
Kate is a reasonably successful and popular author in Kapitolo. But that changes when the police show up at her door - one of her novel characters has escaped from one of her books and committed murder. Identification was easy as all authors have to register and the characters bear the mirror-image fingerprints of their authors.
To save herself, Kate tries to find out for herself which of her many characters escaped and turn them in before the police.
This also leads her and her friends into the secret underground and into their repressed past.
The book plays on many clichés about authors and books - author beginning K K writes story with the letters G G, protagonist ponders if this were a story in a book, the following would happen right away - and it does. A dark dangerous forest just on the outskirts of town - like a fairy tale, neighbourhoods of stereotypical population, a story within the story....
Wonderfully written, exciting, funny, recommended.

Medium: eBook
Another variation on the mystery of Agatha Christie's disappearance.
This time told by her husband's mistress, she too withdraws from the public eye at this time.

30. Echte Katzen Tragen Niemals Schleifen / The Unadulterated Cat by Terry Pratchett
German title translated: Real Cats Never Wear Ribbons
Genre: Non Fiction
Reading Reason: Stock
Medium: eBook
An entertaining little book that shows how real cats differ from all other creatures.
Short, funny, beautiful illustrations.
It made my wait for the next volume in the Discworld: Death series shorter, although - Reaper Man doesn't start until April....

31. Mord ist kein Kinderspiel / The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley
German title translated: Murder is no child's play
Genre: Crime Fiction
Reading Reason: BB 75 books challenge (Thank you again, Jennifer (mstrust))
Medium: eBook
It's been a while since I read the first volume, now I became aware of the series again through jennifer.
A puppeteer comes to the village, of course he and his partner have secrets, of course the ingenious and curious 10 year old investigator and poison expert Flavia figures it out and some other secrets too.
When a murder happens, she is the one who figures out the background and solves the case.
It was very fun to read the book, it won't be the last in the series.
176SirThomas
Another series has also been brought back to my memory.
We got the theatre programme and found a black comedy in it that I enjoyed very much Achtsam Morden,
a lawyer who represents serious criminals but has no time for his family is sent by his wife to a mindfulness seminar. As he implements what he has learned, he mindfully and accidentally kills a clan leader.
At first he is completely desperate, but through his newly acquired ability to focus, he not only stays alive, but becomes successful - with crazy consequences for those around him.
We got good tickets for June and are already looking forward to it.
In the meantime there are already 4 volumes, I bought the first two on holiday - in 2 weeks we are going to the Norsee - I already know what I will buy there.

32. Guter Draht nach oben by Willibert Pauels
German title translated: A good line to the top
Genre: Non Fiction
Reading Reason: Rummage at the library
Medium: eBook
The author is a deacon, radio presenter and carnival speaker.
The book contains 52 thoughts for each week of the year.
Sad, funny, thoughtful, but always full of hope.
Week 43 is entitled "Pinchas Lapide and the Bible" he said, "Either I take the Bible seriously or literally", I found the author's thoughts on this very inspiring.

I hope so too.
Yesterday we buried our neighbour and friend and met his 3 brothers, they are all well over 80 but in a positive mood.
Despite the sad occasion, it was a lovely day.
This morning the water was cold, the heating failed, the flat is well insulated, it didn't cool down.
I called the local service and the mechanic was already there after an hour, the heating is now running again.
Tomorrow I have another day off and good books are waiting for me.
Yes, I think it's a good one.

He is sent to this lighthouse to repair it because the Crew has disappeared and the light has gone out.

35. Lieblingsplätze in Hohenlohe: Orte für Herz, Leib und Seele by Ute Böttinger
German title translated: Favourite places in Hohenlohe: Places for heart, body and soul
Genre: Non Fiction
Reading Reason: Rummage at the library
Medium: eBook
First published: 2013
A compilation of the sights of my homeland, cultural, culinary, scenic with beautiful pictures.
I already knew many things and had already been there, but I found many suggestions for visits to (as yet) unknown places.
With the view "from the outside" you realise again how beautiful it is at home.

36. Die tausend Verbrechen des Ming Tsu / The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu by Tom Lin
German title translated: The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu (Wow a german title that fits!)
Genre: Western
Reading Reason: Rummage at the library
Medium: eBook
First published: 2021
Ming Tsu had married a white woman and was almost killed because of it and sold as a work slave for railway construction.
But because he is a killer, he manages to escape and sets out on a campaign of revenge. He is supported by a blind prohet and a circus troupe with magical abilities.
The book is well written and also exciting, but I felt strangely uninvolved, like visiting a patient in an isolation ward, everyone is present, you can talk to each other, but the glass pane is in between.

I like today's quote in my calendar:
There is nothing mysterious about the question of what women want.
They want everything.
What is interesting, is what they settle for.
Straight Man - Richard Russo
I translated the German quote into english, maybe it is a little bit different in the original

37. Orphan X / Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz
German title translated: Orphan X 😆
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: 50 Books Challenge (Thank you, Barbara (Ameise1))
Medium: eBook
First published: 2016
An orphan is trained to be a killer, but his teacher teaches him to remain a human being.
When he retires from active duty, he helps people in need.
In the process, he finds himself in danger, but who is the enemy?
Exciting and well written, even if the hero is a bit too "super", not everyone can sew an injured artery in himself...

38. Aufzeichnungen eines Serienmörders / Salinja-ui gieok-beob by Young-Ha Kim
German title translated: Records of a serial killer
English Title: Diary of a Murderer
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: 75 Books Challenge (Thank you, PaulS)

A former serial killer lives inconspicuously as a veterinarian. When murders are committed in the area, he becomes afraid for his daughter and tries to become active again himself to protect her. But he has Alzheimer's and can't trust his memories - neither can the reader.
Wonderfully written, a pleasure to read.
Two quotes:
The feeling of writing poetry that no one reads and the feeling of committing murders that you can't tell anyone about are not dissimilar.
The experts of this world only seem like experts to me as long as they talk about things I know nothing about.

Tamara Hayle is a private detective and is asked by her ex-husband to investigate the death of one of his sons.

German title translated: What Dementia Teaches Us About Love
Genre: Non Fiction
Reading Reason: Quotes at a funeral
Medium: eBook
First published: 2019
A wonderful book about dementia and how to deal with it.
The author describes how she lost her father to the disease and learned to live with it.
Touching and recommended.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is almost 100 pages of reading samples at the end.

Funny, exciting, worth reading. I'm looking forward to the fourth volume of the series.

Yesterday and today we have our favorite dish, fresh North Sea crabs with scrambled eggs.
Accompanied by a (purchased) coctail sauce. The black dots are fermented peppercorns.
Yesterday we went to the weekly market, there is a fisherman here who still shells the crabs himself. Normally the crabs are caught here, frozen and driven to Morocco where they are shelled. Then they are driven back to the North Sea coast where they are sold.
The taste of the crabs without the "vacation trip" is a thousand times better! They are a little more expensive, but it's worth it.
The picture is not very good, but that does not matter, the original is delicious!

Today we were sporty on the road, we cheered on the runners of the "Syltlauf", afterwards we went purely in the apartment to champagne and crabs.
After the PowerNap we went out to the beach again.

Thank you, Jennifer, the same to you!
Actually, I wanted The Sun Down Motel, but they didn't have it.
But next week I think I'll go shopping...

>242 SirThomas: Good stats, Thomas and on track for 200 books.
I need to recover my mojo after a lamentable March.
Have a splendid weekend, my friend.

Personally, I enjoyed The Broken Girls more than The Sun Down Motel . I hope you are able to find The Sun Down Motel soon.

>247 FAMeulstee: Thank you, Anita!
>248 vancouverdeb: I ordered it in paperback, Deborah.
It has now arrived and I am looking forward to it.
However, it will still take a little while, there are so many other books on mount TBR...

>241 SirThomas: You are reading up a storm!
>240 SirThomas: I am on hold for this one at the library. It is a long wait so far but I cannot wait until I can read it!

Happy Easter, Thomas and thanks so much for your lovely vacation photos. Congrats on the reading front. I have no clue how you can read so many books next to work.
253SirThomas
Please excuse my absence, I have been busy and am recovering from an infection.
We got through 3 years fine, but now it has hit us.
It looks like we got off lightly, it's just like a bad cold....

>250 PaulCranswick: Thank you Paul, I'm sure you'll catch up again....
>251 figsfromthistle: Thank you, Anita.
I couldn't wait, so I bought it - I still need books for my Thingaversary in May....
>252 Ameise1: Thank you, Barbara, the same to you.
There are two reasons:
First I am a fast reader - that means that i read something sloppy and when i reread a book i also find something new again...
And I read whenever I can - also when watching television...

Sounds like you had the same version of it that I had, and my family. I'm glad it wasn't so bad for you.

I am totally jealous of your wonderful vacation!! But I am sorry to hear you are feeling under the weather now. I hope it continues to be mild. You are well on your way to your goal of 200 -- good luck!

>255 mstrust: Thank you, Jennifer - I think so too.
I'm slowly getting better, my wife is still pretty banged up.
But I have earned a few new titles:
SirSweatalot
SirCoughalot
...
>256 Berly: Thank you, Kim.
Yes, it was wonderful, even in the rain.
The memory of it also helps us a lot at the moment.
