Exploring the 2022 awards, best books of the year, and overall SFF trends

Hey all! Last year, I spent an inordinate amount of time writing a bit of code to analyze 50 years of science fiction & fantasy books. I promised to write an update each year after the SFF awards wrapped up.

This year's analysis includes your classic "top 5" list for the year, but also a look into how the SFF landscape is trending, where these books stack-up compared to the greats of the past 50 years, what this means for overall author rankings, and a little deep dive into SFF duologies.

There's no paywalls or ads or anything funky like that, it's just a fun project -- but I'd love your feedback. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks Cass,I do love lists and surveys! Are you familiar with the work done by James Wallace Harris in the area of lists.though he is an avowed fan of older stuff? His Classics of Science Fiction list is to be found on Worlds Without End .

He collated no less than 65 lists into one list which I am working my way through bit by bit. I've read 121/139 of the books on his list,so still have a way to go. Have however read all of your list, because I have read all the Hugos and Nebulas winners lists on WWEnd! :0)

This seems like a useful exercise. As for Jemisin's latest book, it's not bad, but it's also not exactly what I was looking for. Literature perpetrated in the Time of COVID will be an analytic theme going forward!

Well that is a fun project! Please post an update after next year’s awards. I really enjoyed reading your analysis.
