Country singer Loretta Lynn died October 4 at the age of 90. Her books include Coal Miner’s Daughter, Me & Patsy Kickin’ Up Dust, and Still Woman Enough.

Playwright Charles Fuller died October 3 at the age of 83. His works include A Soldier’s Play and Zooman and the Sign.

>1 varielle: I'm curious about Loretta Lynn's books but she also wrote quite a lot of songs, many of which tell interesting stories, and which are about how many women must have seen the changes brought to their lives by the availability of contraception. There are also stories of challenging alcoholic and abusive men, but also perhaps another side of women's experience, threatening "the other woman" with violence etc in a song like Fist City. I've always been puzzled by how someone who wrote such songs seemed to support some politicians with quite sexist, even misogynist values and agendas, but still, some great music. And I was interested that she worked with such a range of younger musicians too.

Crime novelist Peter Robinson has died aged 72, on 4 October. He was the author of a series of 27 novels (plus some short stories) set in the Yorkshire Dales and featuring Inspector Alan Banks, starting with Gallows' View. He was from my home city, Leeds in the north of England, though he moved to Toronto, Canada, many years ago.

Photographer Douglas Kirkland died October 2 at the age of 88. His books include Michael Jackson: The Making of Thriller and Light Years: 3 Decades Photography.

Actress Angela Lansbury died October 11 at the age of 96. She wrote Angela Lansbury’s Positive Moves.

Actor Robbie Coltrane died October 14 at the age of 72. In addition to his film work he wrote B-Road Britain and Coltrane’s Planes and Automobiles: Engines that Turned the World . Farewell Hagrid. 😢

Former Dartmouth president James E. Wright died October 10 at the age of 83. His books include Enduring Vietnam and Those Who Have Borne the Battle.

Carmen Callil died of leukaemia on 17 October aged 84. Her own books included Bad Faith, about a Vichy war criminal, and a book about her own family history. But she is best known as a pioneering publisher, and especially for founding Virago Books in 1973 in London, to publish books written by women. Later they became known for Virago Modern Classics reprints of forgotten work by women writers, also some important non fiction works, new and reprinted, and the Virago Travellers series of writing by women travellers of the 19th and earlier 20th century. There were also young adult and crime series, and some of the original books published by Virago have since become VMCs over more than 40 years.

Professor and anti-war activist Ngo Vinh Long died October 12 at the age of 78. He wrote Before the Revolution.

Philanthropist Pablo Eisenberg died October 18 at the age of 90. He wrote Challenges for NonProfits and Philanthropy: The Courage to Change.

Actor Leslie Jordan died October 24 at the age of 67. His books include How Ya’ll Doing?: Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived and My Trip Down the Pink Carpet.

Attorney and novelist John Jay Osborn, Jr. died October 19 at the age of 77. His books include The Paper Chase and Listen to the Marriage.

Former US defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter died October 24 at the age of 68. His books include Managing Nuclear Operations and Inside the Five-Sided Box.

Children’s book author Jennifer Bartoli -Kalina died October 18 at the age of 77. Her books include Snow on a Bear’s Nose, Nonna, and The Story of the Grateful Crane.

Katherine Duncan-Jones died 16th October 2022. Many of her books were on the works of Shakespeare.

Animator Jules Bass (known for his partnership with Rankin on Frosty the Snow Man, etc. ) died October 25 at the age of 87. He wrote Herb, The Vegetarian Dragon.

Literary agent Lucianne Goldberg died October 26 at the age of 87. Her books include Madame Cleo’s Girls, Friends in High Places, and People Will Talk.

Historian Thomas Cahill died October 18 at the age of 82. His books include How the Irish Saved Civilization and The Gifts of the Jews.

Former University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley died October 28 at the age of 90. His books include Dooley: My Forty Years at Georgia and Dooley’s Dawgs.

Chef Joyce Molyneux died October 27 at the age of 91. She wrote The Carved Angel Cookery Book and Born to Cook - Angel Food.

Attorney and investigative journalist Paul Morantz was once nearly killed when a cult planted a rattlesnake in his mailbox. He died October 23 at the age of 72. He wrote Escape: My Lifelong War Against Cults and From Miracle to Madness.

Poet Gerald Stern died October 27 at the age of 97. His works include This Time: New and Selected Poems and American Sonnets: Poems.

Professor of design and content analysis Klaus Krippendorff died October 10 at the age of 90. His books include Content Analysis, The Semantic Turn, and Information Theory: Structural Models.

Monsignor John P. Meier died October 18 at the age of 80. His books include A Marginal Jew and Antioch and Rome.

Ann Savours died 8th October 2022. She wrote several books on exploratation in Antarctica as well as being an archivist and museum curator.

Theatre director James Roose-Evans died October 26 at the age of 94. He wrote Experimental Theatre and a memoir A Life Shared.

Author Rebecca Godfrey died October 3 at the age of 54. She wrote The Torn Skirt and Under the Bridge.

Economist Herman E. Daly died October 28 at the age of 84. His books include For the Common Good and Beyond Growth.

Chess master Michael Basman died October 26 at the age of 76. His books include Chess for Kids and Chess Openings.

Folk musician Elizabeth Stewart died October 26 at the age of 83. She wrote Dunkeld and Up Yon Wide and Lonely Glen.

Ian Jack, journalist and author, died October 28th, 2022 aged 77. Just months before he died he wrote a very long (18,000 words) article published in LRB on shipbuilding on the Clyde and the still on-going fiasco of CalMac Ferries which serve the islands off Scotland's west coast.

Physicist Donald H. Perkins died October 15 at the age of 97. His books include Introduction to High Energy Physics and Particle Astrophysics.

Illustrator Laila Shawa died October 24 at the age of 82. Her work includes On the Wings of Peace and Don’t Panic, I’m Islamic: Words and Pictures .

Drummer D. H. Peligro died October 28 at the age of 63. He wrote Dreadnaught: King of Afropunk.

Janel M Mueller, the William Rainey Harper Professor Emerita in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago and former dean of the Humanities Division, died Oct. 21 in Chicago. She was 83 years old. She edited Elizabeth I: Translations 1544-1589 (2002) and Elizabeth I: Translations 1592–1598 (2009) as well as Katherine Parr: Complete Works and Correspondence (2011) and John Donne: Selected Writings (2015).
