Welcome to our October 2022 Themed Read.

This thread is going up a little early to give everyone who wants to join in the chance to have their books lined up and ready to read.

Our theme this month is READ A BOOK THAT WAS PUBLISHED BY VIRAGO BUT IS NOW IN PRINT WITH ANOTHER PUBLISHER

Many early VMCs are still published by Virago, but in some cases the rights have been lost or given up. Some of those books are out of print now but a good number are back in print with other publishers.

So this month we celebrate the books so good that they were reissued twice!

Here is a list of what I have found:

APOLLO CLASSICS:

Letty Fox: Her Luck by Christina Stead (#4)
Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty (#79)

BLOOMSBURY:

The Brontës Went to Woolworths by Rachel Ferguson (#279)
The Orlando Trilogy by Isabel Colegate (#421)

BRITISH LIBRARY WOMEN WRITERS:

A Pin to See the Peepshow by F. Tennyson Jesse (#11)
The Love Child by Edith Olivier (#46)
Chatterton Square by E.H. Young (#242)

CANNONGATE:

Open the Door! by Catherine Carswell (#201)

DAUNT BOOKS:

Cassandra at the Wedding by Dorothy Baker (#67)
A Compass Error by Sybille Bedford (#133)
A Favourite of the Gods by Sybille Bedford (#134)
Who Was Changed and Who Was Dead by Barbara Comyns (#238)
The Matriarch by G.B. Stern (#249)
A Touch of Mistletoe by Barbara Comyns (#308)

DEAN STREET PRESS:

Miss Mole by E.H. Young (#140)

FABER & FABER:

Sleepless Nights by Elizabeth Hardwick (#41)

HANDHELD PRESS:

The Caravaners by Elizabeth von Arnim (#314)

HONNO BOOKS:

Winter Sonata by Dorothy Edwards (#205)

OPEN ROAD MEDIA:

PERSEPHONE BOOKS:

The Crowded Street by Winifred Holtby (#66)
The Squire by Enid Bagnold (#246)
The Rector’s Daughter by F.M. Mayor (#259)
A Very Great Profession by Nicola Beaumann (#406)

TURNPIKE PRESS:

Tea at Four O’Clock by Janet McNeill (#275)

VICTORIAN SECRETS:

The Beth Book by Sarah Grand (#20)

VINTAGE CLASSICS:

Fraulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther by Elizabeth von Arnim (#101)
Vera by Elizabeth von Arnim (#102)
The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim (#222)
All Passion Spent by Vita Sackville-West (#110)
The Edwardians by Vita Sackville-West (#111)
Family History by Vita Sackville-West (#234)
Seducers in Ecuador and the Heir by Vita Sackville-West (#269)
The Ladies of Lyndon by Margaret Kennedy (#63)
Together and Apart by Margaret Kennedy (#64)
The Constant Nymph by Margaret Kennedy (#121)
Troy Chimneys by Margaret Kennedy (#185)

W&N ESSENTIALS:

Two Serious Ladies by Jane Bowles (#10)

There are some regional differences. For example, Elizabeth Taylor is still published by Virago in UK, but I know she is in print with NYRB Classics in other parts of the world. So if you see a shiny new edition of a book that you know was a VMC where you are, that title is eligible.

What will you be reading?

I'm planning to read The Rector's Daughter . . . although I confess my copy is neither a Virago nor a Persephone, but a very beat-up Penguin.

I will be reading Miss Marjoribanks by Margaret Oliphant (1866), in the Penguin edition.

Liz (lyzard) plans to lead a group read of this installment of Oliphant's Carlingford Chronicles in October, for those interested.

Miss Marjoribanks fits this month's challenge, as it is currently published by Penguin.

All welcome.

I have read A Very Great Profession by Nicola Beauman, and enjoyed and appreciated it.

It is a book that I was worried about reading because I feared it would make me want to buy too many other books. To counteract that I made a list of books mentioned that I had unread on my shelves. I needn't have worried, because I had read a great many of the books mentioned, but here is my list:

William: an Englishman by Cicely Hamilton
The Hounds of Spring by Sylvia Thompson
Home Fires in France by Dorothy Canfield Fisher
The Tree of Heaven by May Sinclair - a much mentioned author
Alas, Poor Lady by Rachel Ferguson
Ordinary Families by E Arnot Robertson
The Brimming Cup by Dorothy Canfield Fisher
How to Run Your Home Without Help by Kay Smallshaw
Crewe Train by Rose Macaulay
Mary Olivier by May Sinclair
The Weather in the Streets by Rosamond Lehmann

But before any of that I plan to re-read All Passion Spent.

I read two books for this month, Miss Marjoribanks as part of the group read, and as mentioned above The Rector's Daughter by F. M. Mayor. They are two very different novels and main characters.

I enjoyed Miss Marjoribanks a lot, and then went on to read A compass error and Winter sonata which, now I think of it, are a nice contrast to each other. A compass error is set in summer in the south of France, while Winter sonata is set in a small English village in winter. Both books evoke the seasons well.
