Welcome to my third thread!

The view from my hotel room - I am in rehab for four weeks and I am enjoying it.

Hi everybody, my Name is Thomas, I am 60 years young and I live in a small town in northern Baden Württemberg, Germany.

Since health plays a big role in all our lives at the moment, a quote from Mark Twain:
Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint.

I had this in my previous thred, but I like it.

I arrived well at my rehab and have already done quite a bit, massage, tub bath, arm bath, sports and I treated myself to a golf lesson.
The room is nice and the food is very tasty, what more could you ask for?
Since the Internet does not work in the hotel, I also have a lot of time for reading, but unfortunately little opportunity for LT.

Thank you so much, Anita, that's how I feel too.
At the moment it is raining, lighter, but constantly, which is very welcome.
Since I've already had a few treatments, I think it will help.
Just got back from a mindfulness practice which was very calming.
Next Friday my wife will come for the rest of the time, then it will be even nicer.

and there were books in August:

127. Komm zurück, mein dunkler Bruder / Dexter in the dark by Jeff Lindsay

German title translated: Come back, my dark brother
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: Stock

Dexter is busy with wedding preparations when a series of gruesome murders are committed.
At the same time, his dark side leaves him, apparently afraid of the demon of others.
Excitingly written, but a bit too esoteric.

128. Irische Nacht by Hannah O'Brien

German title translated: Irish night
Genre: Crime fiction
Reading Reason: Stock

The night of October 31 - Samhain. Disguised figures run through the village, a corpse remains.
When there are more deaths and the forensic pathologist disappears, Grace O'Malley comes under pressure.
What do the traveling people have to do with it?
A suspenseful atmospheric crime story.

130. Die Satanischen Verse / The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie

German title translated: The Satanic Verses
Genre: Fantasy
Reading Reason: News

A re-read for a current occasion.
Salman Rushdie is a gifted storyteller with a great imagination.
I don't have to say much about the content, for sure it hurts religious feelings.
But that can never justify personal attacks!

131. State of Terror / State of Terror by Louise Penny and Hillary Clinton

German title translated: State of Terror :-)
Genre: Thriller
Reading Reason: Rummage at the library

A very well written political thriller set rather transparently in the post-Trump era.
Breathless, exciting, a pleasure to read. However, even considering the co-author, the Secretary of State is glorified too much for me. A bit too much self-praise.

German title translated: Kalix. Werewolf of London
Genre: Horror
Reading Reason: Birthday Book - I started the book at the author's birthday

A young adult book about a werewolf who lives outcast from her clan in London. Easy and quick read. Lots of fights, lots of intrigue.
Over 300 pages it is emphasized again and again that she is special and can always transform, in an important battle she cannot...

Speeking of the weekend, it started quite well.
Our local bookstore presented new books - each employee presented several of his favorite new releases.
It was a wonderful evening with a lot of booklovers.
Already the start was great, there was champagne and snacks, then the first round of books and some games they sell.
After that a little Quiz for the audience - I won the quiz and got the game.
The next round of books was followed by a chocolate tasting by a local chocolatier.
After the last round of books we strolled through the bookstore with a glass of champagne.
Now I have a long list of books that I desperately need - and it was too long before ;-).

Another month has passed and it's time for an update.
The next book fits into the time and is a gift:

153. Ebola Saves the Planet! and Other Wholesome Tales by Matthew A. Clarke

Genre: Horror
Reading Reason: Early Reviewers

A very worth reading collection of short stories. The author has a great imagination and great ideas. Sometimes (but not very often) fewer ideas and more story would have been better.
1) Best Birthday Ever!
A game show of a different kind, hopefully still far from reality...
2) Balloon Party
A world where gravity has been reversed and only a few have survived.
What do the gigantic crows have to do with it?
3) Mortal Coil
Two friends in search of fun and adventure in a deadly world.
4) Button Girl
A nice short story about a girl who is ostracized by her looks. But then a new student arrives.
5) Room for Two
Be careful when you make new friends, they may have their own interests.
6) Ebola Saves the Planet!
A school for future super criminals, Ebola doubts her purpose and tries to find her own goals.
Funny, creepy, good.
7) Quasimodorhome
The story of a bell ringer whose hump has a peculiarity.
8)Dead Gorgeous
When an average teenager gets hit on by the school belle, she may have interests of her own.
Beautifully creepy.
9) Snail Boy
A short story about a boy who is actually a snail.
Surprising and creepy.
10) Pinocchio the Wooden Hoe
A very different interpretation of the fairy tale - Interesting what you can do with a growing nose....
And a surprising ending.
One of my favorite stories.
11) The Golden Ticket
A somewhat unusual way to get to fairyland - not everyone's cup of tea.
You should take seriously the warnings you get when you get the transport.

154. Die Frau in Schwarz / The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

German title translated: The Woman in Black
Genre: Horror
Reading Reason: BB 75 books challenge (Thank you again, Jennifer)

A classic spooky story that gives you goosebumps by subtle means.
A lawyer comes to a village to settle an estate. But the atmosphere is peculiar and even he is not spared.
Very well written.

155. Todesengel / Daughters of Silence by R. L. Stine

156. Es klingelte an der Tür / The Doorbell Rang by Rex Stout

German title translated: The doorbell Rang
Genre: Crime Fiction

Interesting how he evades FBI surveillance, it wouldn't work that way today.
Exciting and well written.

157. Der Menschen dunkles Sehnen / The Various Haunts of Men by Susan Hill

Genre: Crime Fiction
Reading Reason: Stock

A very atmospheric crime novel, very well written.
In a small town people disappear, only slowly it becomes clear that the cases are connected.
A young policewoman suspects and gets on the trail of the culprit.
I think I will read more from the author.

127SirThomas
Nov 5, 2022, 6:03 am

and November already had books:

159. In ewiger Freundschaft by Nele Neuhaus

German title translated: In eternal friendship
Genre: Crime Fiction
Reading Reason: Stock

The 10th volume of the series.
This time the novel is set in the Verlgswesen, a dismissed employee was murdered.
It does not remain with the one dead, the two commissioners of the matter only slowly closer. Only slowly the background becomes clearer and an event 30 years ago affects the present. Also the close friendship of some involved persons is not what it seems to be at first sight.
Also privately the two commissioners have problems, Pia's ex has written a crime novel (Mordsfreunde - the title seemed somehow familiar to me ;-)) and dedicated it to Pia, which makes her new husband jealous. Oliver also has big marital problems, his ex-wife also needs his help.
Exciting and again a pleasure to read, but some things are a bit too much...

160. Mord in Highgate / The Sentence is Death by Anthony Horowitz

German title translated: Murder in Highgate
Genre: Crime Fiction
Reading Reason: Stock

A sort of Sherlock Holmes story with an ex-policeman investigator and the author himself as Dr. Watson.
A divorce lawyer is murdered and Hawthorne is called in by the police.
Lots of confusing leads, an incompetent police force, lots of clichés.
Enjoyable read, but certainly not the highlight of the year.

Genre: Fiction
Reading Reason: Mentioned in Newspaper

A son visits his parents in the country.
The father's friend is a mortician, he watches vampire movies for professional reasons, because of the coffins.
When the neighbor misplaces her glasses, the father takes out his new notebook, because he has heard that there should be a search engine. Before the others can laugh at him, he has found it, a top ten list of places where glasses are misplaced.
To get her daughter to visit as well, the neighbor writes to her that her great aunt has died, even though that's not true at all....
An endearing book with quirky characters that you can laugh and smile at, but are not ridiculous.

168. Auf der Lauer liegen / Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent

German title translated: Lying in Wait - WOW - the German title fits!
Genre: Ctrime Fiction
Reading Reason: Review in newspaper

The murder happens in the first few pages, and the perpetrators are also immediately known.
But then a really exciting and very well written drama develops about what follows.
- An impoverished judge with his wife
- Their common son
- A prostitute addicted to heroin
- Her sister
All have their weaknesses and strengths - and their secrets. I found it very exciting how two manipulative psychopaths try to manipulate each other.
By the way, I didn't realize the book's title until the last few pages, just as many things are not transparent from the start.
Again: Highly recommended.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion, Paul.

Apart from the fact that I only ever had internet for a very short time yesterday, I'm fine.
I'm still in the HomeOffice and waiting for my retirement in two years - whereby the "waiting" is connected with a lot of work...

Yesterday I made the preparations for the living Advent calendar. Next Sunday we will be hosting.
From 3.12. to 23.12. there will be a meeting in front of different houses with a little devotion, Christmas carols and mulled wine. There will be a donation box, this year the proceeds will go to the local food bank.

Today at noon we have the whole house over (We are 9 people from 5 apartments). There is the trditional goose dinner. A few years ago a fellow resident won a goose at the Christmas market and we roasted it at our house. Since then we do this every year, only the goose we let the restaurant prepare, they have bigger pots ;-).
My wife makes appetizer and dessert.
This year we have duck, there are more drumsticks - most people do not like dry meat, you have to be flexible.

Healthwise it goes us so far well, we came so far also unharmed by the Corona time, only after the inoculations we had 2 days long smaller problems.

I hope you get better soon.

The story of two children, a blind girl in Paris and a boy in a German orphanage.

170. Mrs Agatha Christie / The Mystery of Mrs Christie by Marie Benedict

German title translated: Mrs Agatha Christie (😉)
Genre: Historical Fiction
Reading Reason: Rummage at the library

What happened when Agatha Christie disappeared at that time?
This book tells the story of how it might have been.
A mystery novel told in the style of Agatha Christie, pleasant to read, but nothing more.

171. Doctor Who und die Krikkit-Krieger / Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen by Douglas Adams and James Goss

German title translated: Doctor Who and the Krikkit Warriors
Genre: Science Fiction

In the evening we are on the way again to the living Advent calendar.
every evening with a different family in the neighborhood, On Sunday we hosted.
There is a small devotion, a nice story, singing together, then mulled wine, non-alcoholic punch, sandwiches, Christmas cookies and cake.
There is a rough framework, but each host compiles its own program and story.
There is a small donation box set up, this year collecting for the local food bank.
It's always beautiful and you hardly notice the rain...

Yes - and the nice thing is that we didn't even know most of the hosts beforehand. Some have become friends.
The event has been going on for several years, the last 2 years we had to interrupt....
Very different people from the neighborhood take part, the biggest distance is about 1 mile.
Some every year, some are there for the first time.

English Title: Ice Moon

Kimmo Joentaa is mourning the death of his wife, who died shortly before. When he returns to work, he investigates the death of a woman who was suffocated in bed.

>209 SirThomas: So sorry, Thomas, my condolences.

I have been absent myself. I got a bad cold before christmas, and both my eyes got infected. My eyes are still sensitive, so I can't spend much time at the laptop.
I will join the 2023 group later this week.

Wishing you all the best for 2023!

>209 SirThomas: Dear Thomas, my condolences on your loss. I wish you and your wife a lot of strength and courage.
From the bottom of my heart I wish you a healthy, happy and contented New Year.
My new thread is here.
I have posted almost nothing in the past year, let alone wrote a review. I hope to do better in 2023.

For a reader, problems with the eyes are especially difficult.

I have no New Year's resolutions,
Now it's the turn of circumstances to improve.

..and they improve a little bit.
Yesterday was a clear sunny day, so I started the Golf season early.
There was a couple who joined me and we hat a good time. The view was fantastic:

This year, my wife will play again, she had the last years some health issues, but she had coach lessons during my rehab in autumn and has found pleasure again. It is a sport you can practicing together even with different physical conditions.
I am looking forward to it!

>209 SirThomas: I am so saddened by your losses, and am sorry that the word loss is plural. That equates to a lot of sorrow.

>1 SirThomas: Once again, another incredible image from your ability to capture such beautiful photos. You are very talented!

Thank you Linda, your visit means a lot to me.

And thanks for the praise, but you should see all the pictures I had to delete....
