The Princes in the Tower by Alison Weir 1999

The Princes in the Tower is one of the seven books in the Folio Society Dark Histories (or Medieval Disasters) series. The full series comprises :-
The Black Death
The Elizabethan Underworld
The Great Fire of London
The Great Plague
The Monks of War
The Princes in the Tower
The Spanish Inquisition

All are bound and formatted in a similar style, although some reprints of the Black Death, very annoyingly, had the title running horizontally at the top of the spine rather than vertically.

As an example of the series, The Princes in the Tower will be reviewed.

This is a very detailed study of the political and social circumstances that led up to Edward V (one of the princes) and his brother being incarcerated in the Tower of London by their uncle, who usurped the throne and became King Richard III. It follows the princes, their family, their fate and their eventual disinternment centuries later, while Richard constantly fought to retain his ill-gotten crown, eventually losing it to Henry VII at the battle of Boswell Fields.

It is a very thoroughly researched and written history, the intricate details of some of the events being described bringing them to life with fascinating anecdotes.

There is a one page forward by Ruth Rendell and bound in are 12 pages of contemporary portraits and manuscripts in full colour. The xvii + 264 page book is bound in black cloth blocked on the cover with a gilt and red image. The orange-brown endpapers are printed in black with a genealogical table. The plain black slipcase is 24.8x16.9cm.

Have this book and really enjoyed it. Have often considered acquiring more of the series.

Excellent review, as usual, Warwick, but I think the above sentence should refer to Edward V, not Henry who died some decades earlier.

Good review, thanks! The only one of this series that I currently have is The Great Plague, but I've read this book in another edition. Alison Weir is a superb historical author.
