order problems (lord of the rings standard ed)

I made my first new folio purchase after buying a few second hand from ebay, and it came with a bashed corner on one of the books and the slipcase. I have sent them a message about this and I'm sure they will resolve the problem, but then when I had a look through the books the printing just looks a bit off. I can find on most pages characters where the white is shining through like the characters haven't quite been printed properly. Do you think its worth asking for a replacement for this or am I likely just to have the same problem again? Just a bit disappointed I guess because they aren't particularly cheap.

Not so much the pixelation, it's more like just missing chunks of letters here and there, like if you stamped something and didn't quite make full contact. I can flip through and find an issue on almost every page I have looked at, some barely noticable and others where there is clearly a chunk of a letter missing.

From what I've read here, the print quality of the Tolkien titles has decreased quite a bit in recent years. I hope you'll get a decent copy as a replacement - some seem to be okay, but all in all, it seems to be a better option to try and get an older edition second hand than a new one from FS these days.

>4 SF-72: Thats a shame. I think I will just ask for a swap then if its still no good I'll grab one off Ebay. Wish I researched a bit beforehand. I wonder if they will need me to send it back before sending me the replacement. It would be nice to compare the two of them and mix and match the best ones out of each. The Two Towers doesn't seem to be too bad in this one (compared to the other two). Hopefully will be a quick fix to get it sorted, quite disappointed because I have never read LOTR and was looking forwards to it.

It's not what you'd expect from a publisher like FS, and you usually don't need to be worried about that kind of thing. It's not good that this happens with books that are for many a first purchase from FS, that's hardly encouraging.

One can't be entirely sure and I think things are starting to change because some people have been abusing their excellent customer service / generous exchange policy. So far I could either simply keep defective standard editions (it's been a while since I had one) or they let me keep a damaged limited edition I bought a few months ago until the replacement arrived, then I returned the first one I got. I asked for that and they allowed it because of what you describe. If it comes really to the worst, you can maybe mix a good set from two bad ones, though that wasn't necessary in my case. But I hope it won't come to that for you.

>6 SF-72: Given that they said their upcoming ‘sample sale’ included customer returns, I’m assuming that the general policy now is to request the return of any items when a new copy is sent out so they can now sell them on ‘as seen’ or refurbished for these sales (assuming the sample sales are back for the foreseeable future & not just a one-off)?

I could imagine that it plays a role how much a book is worth and where they'd have to pay return shipping from / how high the cost is. But in the end, I really don't know for sure what the policy is and am always glad when it isn't an issue. I'd much rather get a good copy right away than have to deal with a damaged one.

>8 SF-72: Would definitely rather have a pristine copy than the hassle of returns. For the last couple of books i received with production problems (mis-cut pages & blank pages) they requested that they be returned for ‘repair’ even though they were only £39.95 standard editions so it seemed like this was the policy now (though im not sure how possible or economical it is to repair an SE book that came with a few blank pages !). Being in the UK the return shipping wasn’t crazy.

My returns would be international. They wanted that for the last limited edition, not for the last standard edition, but that was a while ago. With the German mail carrier constantly raising their prices and on top of that the UK not being in the EU anymore, shipping from Germany has become disproportionally expensive. It might be that - or they might want returns for all books now. It's understandable considering that some people use this opportunity to sell their double copies, but it certainly creates extra hassle for honest buyers. In my case, there were also issues with the free replacement because DHL wanted to charge tax on it a second time. It was rather time-consuming to get that settled.
