June: What are we reading?

Happy June, everyone! What are you reading this month? I'm in the middle of The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray, which gathers the main characters from Jane Austen's novels and makes them all suspects in a murder investigation. I'm enjoying it, though I have no idea who the guilty party is (or who I want it to be)!

I'm in the middle of The Old Curiosity Shop (by Charles Dickens; narrated by Anton Lesser). I'm pretty much dedicating my reading time to listening to this before I start anything else!

I have a bunch going at the moment: The Last Detective by Robert Crais, Nathan Coulter by Wendell Berry, and The Netanyahus by Joshua Cohen. I also am still trying to finish the book we read for book club in Jan - The Killers of the Flower Moon by David Gann. I like it but since we've already had our meeting, I don't tend to pick it up. And my audio book is The Book Jumper by Mechthild Glaser. With summer starting, I'm hoping to spend more time reading.

I'll be interested in hearing what other people thought of The Murder of Mr. Wickham. I had a hard time keeping the characters from Persuasion and Mansfield Park straight, but I still enjoyed it.

I'm currently reading A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall.

>34 BookLizard: I am nearly finished with Wickham and I am also having difficulty keeping the characters straight, as you said. I think that would be a problem for readers who are unfamiliar with those books. The constantly changing point of view is a challenge, but I am enjoying the book.

I've been reading more nonfiction than usual. Right now I'm reading All in: An Autobiography by Billie Jean King, and really enjoying it. That book will count both for AuthorCAT and finish up my BingoDOG card (LGBTQ+ author). Earlier this month I read Caste by Isabel Wilkerson for my book club and AuthorCAT, and The Barbizon by Paulina Bren for AuthorCAT and CATWoman. The first half of next month I'll be reading The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben for book club and We Cry Justice: Reading the Bible with the Poor People's Campaign edited by Liz Theoharis for a workshop I'll be taking in an online conference.
I used to read a lot of nonfiction but recently reading much more fiction than in the past.

I clicked by mistake on Jeeves and the Leap of Faith which is on my Kindle and decided to read it. Maybe I just need a dose of Bertie Wooster and friends, although it took me a minute to get accustomed to the lingo again, pippety-pip!

I seem to be on a Jane Austen binge lately since finishing The Murder of Mr. Wickham. I read a picture book about Jane Austen in the "Little People, Big Dreams" series, and also dug out my mini book of Jane Austen works "all in one sitting." I have a children's bio of her on my table too--Who Was Jane Austen? which is part of a series of nonfiction history and biog for kids.

I just finished Calamity Town by Ellery Queen, which was a BB from another LT reader. I did not know the author was actually two authors working together. I liked the story and the final unwinding of the mystery at the end. (I was on track with detecting the murderer, motive, and opportunity, but not all the details.)

I am really enjoying both of the books that I am currently reading. Lady Cop Makes Trouble is the second book in the Kopp Sisters series and City of Shadows is a fascinating look at 1920's Berlin. It's loosely based on Anna Anderson, a woman who claimed to be the Russian princess Anastasia but the author has added a thrilling murder mystery to the mix and I am finding it a real page turner.

Finished At the Captain's Table by Gervase Phinn, which was mainly character studies of the people on a cruise ship. Based on my experience, the descriptions of the ship and activities were accurate, and the people were like caricatures of cruise ship passengers. Not much of a plot but fun to read all the same.

Just started Bloomsbury Girls which is about a bookstore in post-war London.
