Pern

There seem to be two series with chronological order and none with publication order. According to series description, this one should be in publication order https://www.librarything.com/nseries/77/Pern

I'd reorder in publication order, but it is wider in scope than the chronological one, so I'd like some feedback before doing anything. The core works are the same, so it makes sense to me make this one in publication order as described

Edit: chronological series https://www.librarything.com/nseries/359/Dragonriders-of-Pern-Chronological-Orde...

IMHO-I would make the one label Pern be published order as you suggest. Are the short stories the only works not in both Pern and Dragonriders of Pern: Chronological Order? They could be add to the shorter series, if you know when they occur. And I would make the names Dragonriders of Pern: Chronological Order and Dragonriders of Pern: Publication Order. Anyway that's my opinion.

And what is with De drakenrijders van Pern it is a subset of the books and I don't know what its purpose is.

The default for the Pern series should be story order. The publication order automatically generates.

I read as much of the series I could get my hands on in story order, the same as other readers I've talked with, and I'd be annoyed to see that series order removed from LibraryThing.

To clarify, I believe Pern and Dragonriders of Pern: Chronological Order should be combined.

>4 aspirit: Because the publication order system is broken (doesn't always properly generate dates as expected) We had agreed when Series came out as its own module, to NOT combine those two series. Tim has NOT fixed the date problem, so they should remain separate.

After all, a book written and published in 2001, that has a publication order date of 1890, just doesn't work.

>5 gilroy: Got it. I rarely look at publication order in any series and had forgotten about how the CK entries weren't overriding the messed up data in the date field.

So I'm changing my mind. One series should say in its title it's in publication order. It should be set for that (removing the story order tab). The chronological order tab doesn't need the descriptor in its title.

I went digging for the link explaining the date problem or the "agreement" about Pern. The date problem was quickly resolved in 2020 when the new series went live. I'm not finding a more recent discussion about Pern series orders.

So I'm back to >3 aspirit: and >4 aspirit: while waiting for evidence that the date system remains broken (and that the LT team knows it is).

The series titled just Pern has everything Pern related, including omnibuses, companion books and games. The Chronological one has core books and short stories. Since chronological order isn't working for omnibuses and companion books anyway, having the larger all-encompassing group in publication order makes sense to me. Perhaps the chronological one needs some stories added, not sure

>6 aspirit: But there is a chronological one already, so why do we need 2?

>6 aspirit: That would be because it was not JUST about Pern, but ALL series.
No, that date problem was NEVER resolved, even when Tim said it was

>9 aspirit: From what I see, it was. The examples aren't showing the initial bad data. Do you have an example of publication dates that aren't correct on the series page despite accurate CK entries on the individual work pages?

>10 aspirit: No you haven't. Why would we merge the two instead of having one in publication and one in chronological order? Or in other words, what is your issue with having one in publication order? Why is it undesirable?

When we say "chronological," I'm guessing we are talking about the internal chronology of the stories where the author(s) have written stories as prequels of some kind. If so, there is a reason (perhaps several) why people want this in addition to a publication order listing.

>12 Keeline: You are right on both accounts. But there is a chronological one for this already. I'm going to reorder the other one in publication order later when I have the time and rename it so it is clear, which is which
