Always good to know you're around, Fiona. Thanks for this - do you know if this competition in the past has really unearthed new talent? Do the winners go on to have decent careers in book illustration or related fields?

There already seems to be some controversy over the terms as any artist submitting has to agree to "waive moral rights" on how Folio can use their submissions.

Artists' biographies and dates here: https://www.foliosociety.com/folio-book-illustration-award

In case anyone is wondering why the general tone is gothic/ dark fantasy; as per the OP entrants were asked to 'illustrate a single scene of their choice from Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death'.

The winner and 5 shortlisted entries will be announced on 8 Sept, 2022 at 12 noon BST.

Thanks for spotting them - some really good stuff there. Which would be your favourite? I think Tsin Yi on the bottom row for me - refreshingly underivative.

Also great to see that Gerard DuBois won the V&A illustration prize this year for his work on The Road.

Several of the images reminded me of Harry Clarke's originals, which seemed quite apt.

I too liked the creativity of Thanh-Vu Nguyen, as well as the style of Evangeline Gallagher.

My favourite is Danlin Zhang. Tsin Yi could be interesting, but I find that very difficult to say from this one painting since you can't really tell how characters will be painted.

And the winner is.... Evangeline Gallagher mentioned in >7 ubiquitousuk:

2022 should probably be added to the title of this thread.

Done.

My favourites were Danlin Zhang, May Wang, Sarah Coomer and Thanh-Vu Nguyen. The winning entry doesn't especially grab me. I clearly wouldn't make a good judge by FS standards!

Not mad about the winner, but I wouldn't have picked an alternative from the shortlist. For my money, the longlisted Bryant, Fulgori, Yi and Zhang were more interesting / evocative.

Encouraging illustrators is clearly something FS wants to (and should) do, but in the past the winner was usually published. It's a little odd that the competition exists in and of itself, and the work won't be part of an FS edition.

>12 ian_curtin: I assume part of the reason is they are not in collaboration with House of Illustration with this competition as in previous competitions (I don't see them mentioned in the blog). It may have been part of the agreement to run the previous competitions.

That's another one where the winner doesn't appeal nearly as much to me as some others.

Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death' being the theme of the Folio BIA 2022, perhaps some might wish to feast their eyes on photos of wood engravings from The Masque of the Red Death and Other Tales by Halcyon Press, 1932 posted on the FPF: https://www.librarything.com/topic/319221#7941941
