Japanese politician Shintaro Ishihara died February 1 at the age of 89. His books include The Japan That can say No, The Voice of Asia, Undercurrents, and Season of Violence.

Italian actress Monica Vitti died February 2 at the age of 90. Her autobiography was called Sette Sottane.

Record producer Jon Zazula died February 2 at the age of 69. He wrote Heavy Tales: The Metal. The Music. The Madness.

Editor and publisher Jason Epstein died February 4 at the age of 93. His books include Book Business and Eating: A Memoir.

Sociologist Todd Gitlin died February 4 at the age of 79. He wrote The Sixties and Media Unlimited.

Dr. Herbert Benson has died at the age of 86. His books include The Relaxation Response and The Mind/Body Effect.

Playwright Kenneth H. Brown died February 5 at the age of 85. He is best known for The Brig.

Children’s author Ashley Bryan died February 4 at the age of 98. His work includes Dancing’ Granny and Beat the Story-drum.

Historian Bamber Gascoigne died February 8 at the age of 87. His books include The Christians and How to Identify Prints.

>8 varielle: Bamber Gascoigne is better known as a TV personality and especially for University Challenge here than his books - that was how his death was announced on the radio. He does seem t/doo have had a lot of success as a writer from quite a young age, and an impressive academic background including Cambridge (England) and Yale, studying English Literature. He started his career as a drama critic between education and military National Service and then got the University Challenge job, still only 27, which ran for 25 years. The Christians started off as a TV series that he wrote and presented.

I can't comment on his books or TV history, and I wouldn't dismiss TV history as history - I think broadcast media/documentaries are really valuable and quite like watching/listening to lots of this.

New England bookseller, nature writer, and biographer Jane Curtis died February 7 at the age of 103. Her books include Welcome the Birds To Your Home.

HIV researcher Luc Montagnier died February 8 at the age of 89. He wrote Virus.

Rabbi Douglas Goldhamer, founder of a synagogue for the deaf, died February 3 at the age of 76. He wrote This is For Everyone and Healing with God’s Love.

Artist John Wesley died February 10 at the age of 93. His books include John Wesley Works on Paper and Selected Paintings 1963-1963.

Galleries Julie Saul died February 4 at the age of 67. Her books include Jean Cocteau: The Mirror and the Mask and Moholy-Nagy.

Wharton business professor Sigal Barsade died February 6 at the age of 56. Other reports say she died in January. She wrote Under Pressure: Managing Stress.

YA author Lani Forbes died February 3 at the age of 35. She wrote The Age of the Seventh Sun series.

Author and humorist P. J. O’Rourke died February 15 at the age of 74. His many books include Parliament of Whores and Holidays in Hell.

US Col. Gail S. Halvorsen “Uncle Wiggly Wings” died February 16 at the age of 101. He wrote The Berlin Candy Bomber.

Journalist Martin Tolchin died February 17 at the age of 93. His books include Clout and Selling our Security.

Photographer Sharon J. Wohlmuth died February 13 at the age of 75. Her work includes Sisters and A Day in the life of the American Woman.

Not a writer, but a passing worth noting - Duvall Hecht created Books on Tape in response to a ridiculously long commute and bad music on the radio. He died February 10 at the age of 91. He was also a gold medal Olympian.

Hockey coach Emile Francis died February 19 at the age of 95. He wrote The Secret of Winning Hockey.

Illustrator Jan Pienkowski died February 19 at the age of 85. His works include Meg and Mog, The Kingdom Under the Sea, and A Necklace of Raindrops.

Architect Paul Willen died February 2 at the age of 95. He was responsible for The Lower Manhattan Plan.

Dr. Paul Farmer died February 22 at the age of 62. His books include Pathologies of Power and Infections and Inequalities.
