Welcome to my fifteenth thread of Twenty Twenty-one.

The Good: Family, friends, kitties, books, in constantly-rotating order. Modern medicine, too. Cardio-rehab available within a 15-minute drive.

The Bad and the Sad: The unvaccinated still ruining it for everybody who’s a responsible person and citizen. Omicron sweeping the country, although apparently it’s milder than other variants.

The Ugly: The Gang of Psychos. They’re destroying this country.

I am so glad I’m retired, and am beyond grateful that I don’t have to venture out to work to earn a living ever again. I’ve paid my dues. Every day I don’t have to get up to an alarm is a cause for celebration.

I read and am a charter member of the Redbud and Beyond Book Club, started in 1997. We haven’t met since March of last year, met July 11th and decided to ramp back up in September. However, that’s now off. I am President for our local Friends of the Library (henceforth abbreviated FoL). Things are very quiet, especially with no book sales since Fall 2019.

I have been married to Bill for 30 years and am mother to Jenna, 28, who lives in Asheville now. Bill and I live in our own little corner of paradise on 8 acres in central North Carolina USA.

We have three kitties. Inara on the left, from a 2017 Christmas picture. Zoe ‘upstairs’ and Wash ‘downstairs’ in the picture on the right.

.
No theme for pictures although I do like posting ones of family members. This one is Chrismas 1979. Seated, L-R: My brother Doug, sister Laura with her daughter Heather. Standing, L-R: My mother, me, my dad, and my maternal grandmother.

My goal last year was 100 books and I exceeded it by 24. This year’s goal was 100, which I reached at the end of November. I’m still not reading much, but that’s okay.

.

.

First and final year: With Julia’s blessing, I’ve taken over the Dick Francis Shared Read, now in its 3rd year. Here’s the link: Third Race at the LT Racetrack: a Dick Francis SHARED Read. We’ve had a good run, and it is time to end gracefully.

Every year I buy a new Lett’s Week to View Desk Diary. The first thing I do when I get it is to put in my name, address, phone number, and email address in case it needs to be returned to me, although it hasn’t gone out of the house since a meeting at the Library in February. Next, I transfer my voter registration card from last year’s to this year’s diary. I then write “God does not make bargains, but She does dispense grace.” across the top of the left inside front cover. Finally, I print out and tape in two quotes. For 2022, however, I’m also going to include this new poem, first seen on Joe Welch’s thread. I’m not fond of prose poems as a rule, but this one speaks to me.
Good bones

by Maggie Smith

Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.

2021 – changed dramatically yet again in November.

books added - 2020 was the great conjunction of adds and culls, both at 128. Keeping the adds down will probably be as easy as it was last year because of the pandemic - no Friends of the Library book sales and no trips to used book stores and thrift shops.

**I spoke too soon - a FoL book donation with me getting first dibs has put me in the hole already.**

October’s Lightning Round

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman 9/29/21 10/3/21
Such a fun book. All the accolades are true, it is in turn a story about our intrepid Thursday Murder Club – Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim – and two separate crimes that must be solved, bad guys dealt with, and justice done. Pretty much flawless, with consistent characters, witty dialog, and deep truths about love, aging, and life in general screaming off each page.
Dance of Death by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child 10/3/21 10/6/21
This is a solid entry in the series with strong action, intricate and tight plotlines, and good characterization.
The Book of the Dead by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child 10/6/21 10/10/21
The third in the Diogenes trilogy. Diogenes is Pendergast’s brother, who has sworn to destroy him for reasons unknown. Pendergast is in a high security prison awaiting trial, his allies work on breaking him out – excellent action there – and the story ends shockingly, thousands of miles away from New York.
The Mandibles: 2027 - 2049 by Lionel Shriver 10/11/21 10/17/22
Shriver identifies this as ‘acid satire’. I consider contemporary fiction to be plausible, and since this presents such a horrific future I originally thought it science fiction. Being incurably optimistic, I don’t want to consider the future Shriver writes so convincingly about - that everything Bill and I ever worked for would be wiped out in an instant and we’d probably become homeless to a band of marauding house thieves. This is an amazingly scary and marvelous book, full of loving and vicious characterizations, with unflinching takes on truth and human nature. If even one-tenth of what happens to the Mandibles happens here in the US in my lifetime… well, I shudder to think about that kind of future.
The Merchant's House by Kate Ellis 10/17/21 10/23/21
Excellent start to a promising series. An archaeological dig’s discoveries reveal a murder that helps solve a present day crime. Well-wrought and vivid characters, a finely paced plot, and a great police procedural.
Death at Whitewater Church by Andrea Carter 10/26/21 10/28/21
A very good start to a new series for me, with Benedicta “Ben” O’Keefe living in a very small town in Ireland after fleeing a family tragedy 6 years earlier. She’s a solicitor and the surveying of a property for sale leads to the discovery of a skeleton. A local family’s eldest son’s disappearance on his wedding years earlier, the erratic behavior of his younger brother, and various and sundry interesting characters and small town situations make this quite enjoyable. Thank goodness I like P.D. James – Amazon tells me Perfect for fans of Louise Penny, PD James, and Donna Leon, otherwise I’d have to boycott it.

Morning, Karen. Happy Sunday. I hope you had a lovely Christmas. We were over at Sean's family yesterday and had a nice time. Of course, Jack was there and that always enlivens the surroundings. We are visiting with friends this afternoon, but I plan on squeezing in a solo walk beforehand. Our weather remains mild. It was 54F for Christmas Eve.

>13 msf59: Hi Mark, and thank you. I’m trying to find a good meme and failing. I stole yours from last year but don’t want to do that this year. I think I’ve got something boring but serviceable picked out. Of course, I've got 'til January 1...

>14 alcottacre: Thank you, Stasia! Love the gif. We had a quiet day and I didn’t indulge in either too much sugar or salt. How’s that for progress?

We watched a very strange movie with Benedict Cumberbatch about Louis Wain, an illustrator from England in the late 1800s. He popularized cat images but had a very sad life. Progress of his cats from normal to reflective of his schizophrenia.

>15 quondame: Thank you twice, Susan!

>16 drneutron: Thank you, Jim.

>17 EllaTim: Hi Ella, and thanks. 124 was from last year. This year, if I’m lucky, I’ll get to 104 or 105.

>18 PaulCranswick: Thank you, Paul!

>19 FAMeulstee: Thanks Anita. I did debate about starting a new one, but too many days left and some people have a hard time loading really long threads.

>20 msf59: ‘Morning, Mark, and happy Sunday to you. We had a nice and quiet one, thank you. I hope yours was good at Sean’s parents. Gotta follow the kid, right? *smile*

Enjoy the time with your friends and your solo walk. It’s way too warm here, too. 56F now, going to 73F. Great for the propane bill, though.

We’re going to brave the grocery store today to lay in supplies for Jenna’s visit, but right now it’s coffee, a bit of LT, and perhaps a bit of reading.

Yay for Jenna visiting! I know you're looking forward her being there for several days.

>1 karenmarie: Those pants. My God, my dad had a pair almost exactly like them. It must have been a Sears catalog thing. Great family photo. Plus, I do absolutely love those Franklin stoves. Great cat pics.

>21 karenmarie: Speaking of cat pics, looking at those Wain paintings is like one of those puzzles where you try to figure out the pattern and what's next. Crushingly sad. I also have a hard time looking at paintings by van Gogh. Would you recommend the movie? I like Cumberbatch as an actor but I never got that about him being a sex symbol. Not a sex symbol, but you know who I can't take my eyes off of? Rosamund Pike. There's something about her that is absolutely hypnotic. Have you seen the movie I Care a Lot? If not you, Bill, and Jenna should definitely watch it together. Great fun, and a very dark comedy.

Morning, Karen. We had a nice day yesterday. Visited friends and played cards. My Bears surprisingly pulled off a win yesterday, in the final minutes and that was out their talented rookie QB. Sorry about your Panthers but the Bucs are very good team. Doing Trail Watch duties this AM. Still mild...

>25 SomeGuyInVirginia: Pretty ugly pants, eh, Larry? We were a Sears family. Thanks re the photo. This stove’s propane, but it replaced a wood-burning stove that was the exact same model. We even have a remote control for it.

I guardedly recommend The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, only because his life seems to have been quite depressing in some ways. He’s definitely not a sex symbol here. Haven’t seem I Care a Lot, thanks for the recommendation. Looks like something we’d like.

>26 richardderus: I remember seeing this series of illustrations a long time ago – perhaps in a Time-Life Science series – showing the progression of schizophrenia. Thanks! I’m waiting for a call from Jenna any minute now – it takes her about 3.5 hours to get here.

>31 msf59: ‘Morning, Mark! Glad you had a nice Sunday. Congrats to your Bears, boo hiss to my Panthers. We watched the Chiefs demolish the Steelers. The Chiefs are my backup team and they made up for the Panthers. I hope Trail Watch goes well.

I’ve got a male Downy, house finches, cardinals, and Carolina Chickadees visiting the feeders.

Hi Karen, happy new thread. I hope you are having a wonderful visit with Jenna. Christmas here was delayed by snow which was our first white Christmas in 13 years. It and cold weather are sticking around and we're heartily sick of them by now. The weather is strange all over.

Déc 29, 2021, 9:44 am

Hi friends! Yesterday was ‘Christmas’ with Jenna, and we stayed busy and had such a good time and then I was so whupped that I never came back to the Sunroom!

>36 richardderus: Hiya, RD!

>37 SomeGuyInVirginia: I would imagine, unfortunately, that there’s still a major aspect of 1950 to SLC, as long as white male church elders have their way.

>38 richardderus: Okay, ‘met’ gay people.

>39 msf59: ‘Morning, Mark, a day late! Rehab was a challenge again on Monday because I bumped the pace again to get my heart rate 20 beats above my starting heart rate. I asked one of the therapists what the goal was and she said 30 minutes of 20-or-above, and that would require about 45 minutes on the treadmill to warm up and cool down but still give 30 minutes. Sigh. We’ll see what they say. So far they’re happy with my 30 minutes and my pushing myself every 2nd or 3rd visit. Yay for snow. I wish we had snow, but we’re in the 70s still and again.

>40 Crazymamie: Hi Mamie! Jenna’s home and it’s quite wonderful. Definitely good medicine and magic.

>41 LizzieD: Yes, we had a wonderful Christmas. And since we stayed in the house and isolated, as it were, we were able to bring Christmas to the day. It was quite surprising, actually, but it definitely felt like Christmas. We watched A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott on Monday, 'Christmas Eve', and yesterday we watched the Jim Carrey How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Die Hard.

>42 alcottacre: Hi Stasia! Oh yes. And yesterday we had a mission – but it’s a long story that I’ll try to condense. In 1980 friend Karen in Montana and I each bought a ~ 10” x 15” reprint of a 1896 prurient calendar – a snickering men-kind of thing (not our glorious men here! I hasten to add) with young women in deshabille holding kittens in front of their crotches - pussies in front of pussies, in other words. Karen stupidly gave hers away in the early 2000s and mentioned that fact to me about 6-8 months ago, forgetting that I’d bought one too. She was ecstatic that I had bought one too and has been badgering me to have Jenna look for it for the same 6-8 months now. I thought it was in the attic. I promised Jenna well over a year ago that I wouldn’t go up the dangerous steps to the attic, and this is the first time there’s been enough time for us to carve out an hour or two to look for it.

We found it yesterday, but not in the attic. It was in the second dormer Jenna crawled in to look for it. So now I need to get it copied and send a copy off to Karen. She doesn’t know we found it yet, because I’ll hear about it every time we talk. *smile* So, yes, fun with Jenna.

>43 Familyhistorian: Hi Meg, and thank you. Wow, yay for the Christmas snow, sorry you’re tired of the snow and cold weather.

Coffee, chatting with Jenna and Bill. I thought I should at least come visit my own thread this morning before heading to rehab – I’ll try to visit a few threads before I have to start getting ready for rehab.

Die Hard is the greatest Christmas movie of all time! Okay not really. I'd probably give that to It's a Wonderful Life just because, but my personal favorite is Home Alone. Probably the only movie I've seen more than five times. Once, at work, in a meeting before a meeting I argued that it was one of the great American classic films. My arguments did not sway.

How is rehab addressing your knee pain?

>45 msf59: Good afternoon, Mark! Happy Wednesday back at’cha. Home with books is not a bad idea at all. I approve 100%

>46 Crazymamie: Oh it was, Mamie! Rehab today was productive – I kept it at the same pace as I’d upped it to last time but did that pace for 20 minutes or so. *pats myself on the back* Then I drove back past our house from rehab to the town we live in to pick up prescriptions and take out – junk food for Bill and grilled chicken salads for me and Jenna. I ate half of my salad for lunch, had some apples with caramel after, then started baking Pecan Puffs for Jenna’s romantic interest’s cookie box and a late Christmas present for friend/neighbor Louise. I’ll save a couple for Bill, too… and NOW I’m whupped!

>47 richardderus: Yes, the kidlet time is wonderful. *smooch*

>48 SomeGuyInVirginia: Jenna and I love It’s a Wonderful Life, but Bill, not so much. We probably won’t have time to watch it before she leaves Friday a.m., but that’s okay – we’ve been having a great visit and Christmas holiday.

The rehab is probably aggravating it, although today I’d kept up on the pain meds from overnight – not letting them lapse, so to speak, before starting them over again, and so far so good.

>49 Berly: It was, Kim! Every time Jenna wants to talk on the phone or text or actually visit, I’m appreciative. I want this romance to work out, in which case I’ll get less of her time, but it will be in a good cause – her happiness. Thanks re the rehab. I learned to do that in the 1980s when I went to the gym – a little bit of an increase not every time but every other time.

>50 LizzieD: Hi Aunt P.A.! Your rehab girl is coming along…

>51 Whisper1: Thanks, Linda. I’m glad you had the company of your daughter and children for Christmas, glad that your pain levels are curtailed. Wishing you a restful day at the turn of the year. I make lots of air fryer sweet potato fries and have found that a brief dusting of cornstarch really helps with a crunchy exterior, if that is your desire. And I do two cooks: one at a lower temperature (370 deg or so) for 10 - 15 minutes, then at a high temperature (400 deg) for a few minutes to get that crunch I am looking for but with a lovely cooked interior.

I also use my french fry cutter to get standard fries. Putting the potatoes in the microwave for a minute or two to soften them up makes them easier to cut through the cutter.

Quick reply about Karen's feral kitties.

Do you remember Bob the huge Manx feral I adopted this summer? Well, with regular feeding he's done nothing but put on more pounds. He's very friendly, and also moved indoors with this week's frigid temps. Honestly, when I'm reading in my recliner, he stretches from below my calves to close to my face. I've never met such a large cat. When he jumps up, the recliner swivels; it's like having a baby elephant land on me.

Cree, my used to be feral, who weighs in at about 7 pounds is terrified of him. My vet thinks Cree must have been the runt of a litter -he's at the opposite end of the cat size spectrum. Poor Cree. Can you imagine someone moving into your home that outweighs you three times over and comes at you growling and flashing knives?

Actually, it's mostly peaceful. Bob backs off quickly with me yelling No! No! No!

Hope Karen's kitties do OK. They say this stretch of below normal temps is supposed to last through mid January.

And oh yes! Happy New Year!

>80 msf59: Hi Mark! I hope your bird walk goes well, and yes! my new thread for 2022 is up.

>81 streamsong: I do remember Bob. I'm amazed that he's gotten even bigger. Poor Cree, but I'm glad to hear that Bob backs off when you yell No! No! No!

Karen has decided to buy a heated little house, grumbling about the cost, but worried about the boy kitty - something like this: Toozey Heated Cat House for Winter, Indoor/Outdoor Cat House Weatherproof with Heated Cat Bed, Providing Safe Feral Cat House for Cats or Small Dog, Easy to Assemble Cat Shelter.

She's a softie, after all.

You're welcome, Janet!

I'll have to ask her if she's gotten it yet.

edited to add: She is going to order it today from our conversation last night.
