Realistic fiction/easy reads for teenagers

Hi everyone,

For quite some years now, I've had the tradition of buying books as Christmas gifts for my (10!) nephews and nieces. As they grow older, it's becoming a bit more difficult to find them books they will like, so I thought I'd ask for some recommendations. In particular, I'm looking for recommendations for easy reads for two teenagers:
- The oldest nephew is 15 and is not a big reader. He likes the outdoors (he's with the scouts) and music (think loud noise and smoke machines!). He doesn't like fantasy or science fiction, which is a pity, because that's more my cup of tea.
- The other nephew is 13 and likes to read, or he used to when he was younger. He likes video games and soccer. He is not particular about genre, but prefers easy reads.
If possible, I'm looking for relatively popular titles, so the chance of them being translated to Dutch are biggest. I'm curious to see your suggestions!

Best, SimoneA

For the 13 year old, I'd recommend Holes by Louis Sachar. My nephews loved it.

That’s a shame they don’t care for SF/fantasy. Lots of great stuff there.

Second Holes.

Also, since there is tv/film now on this story, you might find it in translation : Tomorrow When the War Began

Those both sound like great suggestions, thanks!

The 15-year-old might like Gary Paulsen's Hatchet series. Older titles, but well-loved.

For the 13-year-old, I'd reccommend Lisa McMann's The Unwanteds series, or Andrew Klavan's The Last Thing I Remember (Homelander's series.)

Does the 13-year-old like Star Wars? My lazy-reader son quite liked the Thrawn series by Timothy Zahn at that age. Another option might be a manga -- there are a number of soccer related ones (eg. Captain Tsubasa).

For the 15-year old, possibly something by Carl Hiaasen? eg. Hoot or Flush. I also thought of Gary Paulsen (touchstone: Hatchet), and Jack London (eg. Call of the Wild or White Fang ).
