BBC Thought of the Day.

On BBC radio every day. All about Christianity. You remember Christianity? All about being fair to every one and loving your neighbour? So how about the BBC allowing other beliefs to have their own Thought of the Day?

Well, the very Christian BBC only said two words to that idea and the second one was "off". So we can imagine how they would feel about an Atheist\Humanist Thought of the Day. can we not?

Would it be a good idea to start one here on HH? Lots of folks on LT would love to hear your Atheist\Humanist Thought of the Day, I am sure I would. BBC: meaning "Better Bright Comments" here on LT (unless you can think of a better one. )

The OP is a bit OTT.

Although BBC Radio 4's "Thought for the day" is a god-slot, it isn't a Christianity-slot. It has often been presented by representatives of Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainis. Some of them are listed on the Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thought_for_the_Day)

It's all very anodyne. If you were just given the text, you would often be hard pushed to tell which god the speaker worships.

The real criticism is that it is broadcast in the middle of a news programme.

I can't say anything about the earlier "Prayer for the day" (broadcast at 05.43-05.45, it's way too early for me), which also has a Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prayer_for_the_Day). Although I would add that it's also on six days a week, replaced on Sunday by "Bells on Sunday", a peel of church bells. I doubt whether "Bells on Sunday" has ever been replaced by a Adhan or Barechu.

The persistence of the relatively harmless Thought for the Day (and the religiously low-key Choral Evensong) does prevent American-inspired culture-war enthusiasts from protesting that the national broadcaster is "anti-religious" or "anti-Christian" and demanding something more offensive.

(The Sunday Morning Service is overtly and deliberately Christian: a friend on Facebook amuses us every week by her responses, ranging from "ooh, this is nice" for polyphony from a cathedral to "****, dive for the off switch" for anything happy-clappy with a drum kit.)

>4 MyopicBookworm: In UK , the presenter's BBC accent (which no-one else in the UK uses) turned the whole of "Sunday Morning Service" into a comedy.

Please don't tell me it is still broadcast in 2022.

I clearly remember them singing "My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord" and another student in our digs shouting, "You lying bastards, you have seen nothing of the sort". and throwing the switch. I am laughing now just thinking of it. :-)

It is still broadcast. But it doesn't have a BBC presenter: it is generally hosted by a church and presented by their chief priest/minister/pastor/lead guitarist.
