Her friend lives in NY so we didn't do many of the touristy things. Instead we visited local attractions like this amazing food truck site called Smorgasbord ( I think), where I just had to get the macaroni and cheese donut (I mean have you ever heard of such a thing?!) Yum!

New York, New York! Wow. And so it looks like a mac 'n' cheese donut is basically deep fried mac 'n' cheese? (I think I just drooled on myself.) No envy for the wedding dress shopping (or all that walking!), but I'm glad it was fun for you all, and that your daughter found The One. And also ... glad you're back in business with the laptop. I love the photos of your NY trip with your lovely daughters. I assume you shopped at Kleinfeld's rather than being filmed? I'm glad your daughter found The One. I'd love to see a photo, too - or do we have to wait until after the groom has seen his bride in her dress?

And book shopping, too. Echoing the relief that you didn't run into any allergies.

Hi Kim my dear, so lovely to see you back now that you have possession of your laptop again, i see that the scores are tied at the moment, 62 apiece.

The trip to NY for your daughters wedding dress looks great, i am glad you all had a good time and i bet the dress is gorgeous. I remember when we took Amy wedding dress shopping for the first time, we went to Northallerton to a dress warehouse, i left them to it and didn't expect a purchase until i got a call to say she was all done and dusted and was the price OK, i said yes and 14 months later i saw it for the first time 20 minutes before the ceremony started when i went to collect her and walk her down the aisle, i burst into tears and Amy chastised me but i just said that i told her this would happen, Dad's and Daughter's on the wedding morning, of course Dad's cry, lol.

I hope all is well with you all, we are both fine and Elliott is growing everytime we see him. Sending love and hugs to you all from both of us dear friend.

>43 laytonwoman3rd: Here, have a napkin. And, yeah, the walking was a lot! So glad we found the dress. My daughter is going to a wedding show today to look for accessories, like the veil. : )

I would have been lost in NY without technology! I used my phone to map how to get places. It was great. It would give me choices of walking, bus, or subway and then tell me how far in each of the modes. Loved it!

>46 humouress: No, we did not get filmed. My daughter was definitely not interested in that! And I am glad, too, because I can barely tell a mermaid from a princess silhouette. I could only comment on the fit and whether I thought it made her look pretty, which is really all the counts anyway. Ha! There was one other one we all loved, but it had long sleeves and the consultant asked if she liked to dance (she does) and then told her it would limit her, so she said no and we moved on.

Your New York trip sounds like it was tremendously fun. The Strand is incredible. I especially liked the top floor where there were some old book cases. When I was there way back when, I found a book of the Pre Raphaelite women that I searched for and could not find. It was especially great to find it at a reasonable price. I love the photos of you and your daughters, and you and New York. It is only an hour and 1/2 away from where I live.

When granddaughter Kayla (now 18) was little, we took the bus into the city and then the sub way up to the Natural History Museum. She loved the dinosaurs, and the floor where there was a huge whale over the bottom floor. She took so many photos that the battery in her camera gave out.

I am so glad you had a wonderful time with many memories.

So, despite not having any energy this last week, I have been tutoring a friend on nunchucks on Zoom each morning (She is testing for third degree in November); held pumpkin carving night for family; attended a FR for Children's Cancer that my daughter hosted; went to girls-only brunch and got our nails done before my niece's wedding -- which is today!!

She is having a small ceremony up on the mountain with only immediate family, so I wrote a poem for them to read to each other. Oh, and got them matching raincoats to wear! LOL

Did I mention the meds are making me tired, too? And that we have a private water collection that then is pumped uphill to the public sewer line and that yesterday the alarm went off so we had to stop using water? It seems to be okay today. Fingers crossed. I need a nap!! : )

Only a junior, so she has plenty of time to consider her options.

We didn't really do trick or treating in Yorkshire when I was a boy but the upcoming Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes night and the evening that precedes it Mischievous Night were great fun when I was younger.

It is a difficult one to explain really - Guido Fawkes was part of the Gunpowder Plot in the early years of James I reign (1605 to be precise) attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament with King James inside it. He was apprehended in the attempt and an effigy of his has been burned atop bonfires on 5 November ever since. We used to celebrate with cinder toffee and baked potatoes and the night sky was ablaze with fireworks.

I understand that this year in many places Bonfires have been cancelled because of global warming! I hope that the Chinese and Russians polluting to their hearts content and not going to Glasgow understand the sacrifices being made!!!

So I am recovered from my pericarditis. And my hip, although not 100% yet, was good enough for my 3rd pretest in TKD on Saturday, working towards 4th degree black belt, aka Master. It was the first time in a year and a half that I tested in person instead of over Zoom -- so much more fun!! Prepping for the test was also a major reason for my ghosting LT--so many forms to remember. 22 Poomse/Forms and 30 Nunchucks. We still didn't do sparring, but that was okay with me--I am not in shape for that yet!

“Revolutionary . . . A visionary addition to American literature.” —Star Tribune

An electric debut novel set against the twilight of the American gold rush, two siblings are on the run in an unforgiving landscape—trying not just to survive but to find a home.

Ba dies in the night; Ma is already gone. Newly orphaned children of immigrants, Lucy and Sam are suddenly alone in a land that refutes their existence. Fleeing the threats of their western mining town, they set off to bury their father in the only way that will set them free from their past. Along the way, they encounter giant buffalo bones, tiger paw prints, and the specters of a ravaged landscape as well as family secrets, sibling rivalry, and glimpses of a different kind of future.

Both epic and intimate, blending Chinese symbolism and reimagined history with fiercely original language and storytelling, How Much of These Hills Is Gold is a haunting adventure story, an unforgettable sibling story, and the announcement of a stunning new voice in literature. On a broad level, it explores race in an expanding country and the question of where immigrants are allowed to belong. But page by page, it’s about the memories that bind and divide families, and the yearning for home.

From my perpective--I read this for my November RL bookclub. Great discussion book! There are lots of topics to ponder: racial discrimination, honor, family, love, and gender identification to name a few. But I probably wouldn't have finished it without the push from knowing there would be a discussion.

The writing is very staccato. For those of us who read it in print, it was hard going at first. Sometimes the sentences are two words, and sometimes half a page with lots of commas. However, those who read it on audio, loved it. The first section is hard going, depressing. The second lightens up a bit. The third is a surprise and the fourth wraps things up. Sort of. It is interesting to see the story unfold from several points of view. A dark book.

So take all the accolades and my thoughts and decide for yourself!! LOL

So Friday is going to be spent cooking and getting ready for Thanksgiving, which we are holding this weekend. Still doing everything out in the garage with heaters and open doors because my daughter and her fiancée are then meeting up with his dad on Thursday, and he is going through Chemo, so we have to be extra cautious about not sharing germs. I bought some fun tablecloths (at 50% discount!) to help brighten things up a bit. At least we get to be together. : )

And I am not ready for the Christmas rush....sigh. Good luck!

All caught up with you, Kim, and as usual it makes me tired just thinking about how busy your life is! I don't know how you do it. SO many health up and downs, and I am amazed by your spirit and your attitude. Glad that you have recovered from your pericarditis, and that your hip is on the mend. And your TKD progress!!! Congrats.

For some reason, I could not see any of the photos up thread, but your trip to NYC sounds fun and full of the right kind of chaos. Glad that your oldest was able to find her dress. Daniel and Kaitlyn just celebrated their first wedding anniversary on October 2nd, and it brought back memories of how very special their wedding was - so small and intimate and totally reflective of them. I love the poem you wrote for your nieces - what a lovely memory for all of you.

Hoping that your Thanksgiving feast is full of fabulous this weekend.

Hello Crazy!! Man, you get points--you really read the thread!! It is so nice to see you here. It's so nice to BE here!! I am hoping this is a new trend because LT and 2021 didn't mix that well and I missed everyone here.

I attribute my positive attitude regarding health conditions to my parents. My mom always got me bagels after my allergy shots so I looked forward to them. When my asthma kicked in running track laps with my dad, he always said go a little farther, make it round the bend, finish the straightaway. And sure, go on that sleepover even though they have dogs. I'll pick you up if you have problems (which was usually around 2 in the morning). They never cut me slack but said do the most that you can when you can. And I am eternally grateful.

I think the nice thing about weddings now is the they are so individual and I like that. I know none of my kids' weddings will be the same and I look forward to celebrating with each of them in their unique way. Glad you have such nice memories of your son's.

Happy Thanksgiving week!

I love those memories, Kim! My Dad had a similar saying that I always tell my own kids - Do what you can when you can. Meaning, if you have the chance to be kind, to be generous, to be there, then do it. Don't wait for the perfect moment or for the grand gesture - it's the little moments that mean the most in life and should not be wasted.

I agree about weddings now. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't. I mean, I would still get married but skip the actual wedding. Although I do have a lovely memory of my Dad walking me down the aisle, and he leaned into me just before we started and said, "It's not too late, kid. Say the word and, we can go the other way." Made me laugh but I also knew that he absolutely meant it.

>219 Crazymamie: Another great message! I love that. Those little moments really do add up, too. And I can see why you miss your dad so much.

So I guess that means you aren't going to celebrate your anniversary by saying your vows again? ; ) If I had to choose I would still do the wedding ceremony again. I had a blast and it was one of the most romantic, fun nights I ever had. And I loved having everyone there to celebrate with us. Well, each to his/her own!! : )

Stopping by to return the favor of your visit, skimming a bit. I'm really not around much these days, maybe the new year will be less hectic?

>220 Berly: I do miss my Dad to the moon and back again even though I know he is still with me in my heart and in the eyes of Birdy, the build of Daniel, the tender heart of Rae, the gentleness of Abby...

My wedding was very stressful, and my two of my BILs had a falling out that changed everything. I would marry Craig over and over again, but no, I don't feel a need to revisit saying the vows. Or a ceremony. BUT, Daniel's wedding gave me back the joy a wedding can bring - what they had sounds like what you had, and that is very happy making.

>221 ursula: You haven't been around much and I miss you! I hope 2022 is a little easier to deal with and we get to enjoy your presence more. Hugs.

>222 Crazymamie: So sweet. How you still see your Dad all around you.

And that would be why you don't want a wedding repeat! Yikes. Glad that you and Craig are so happy together and that Daniel's wedding brought them and you joy. : ) I hope they find the kind of loving relationship you share with your hubby.

>223 msf59: Happy Sunday , Mark! Among other reads, I am currently about 60 pages into The House the Cerulean Sea. It is off to a strange but enjoyable start and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Happy Sunday, Mamie!

I’m impressed with your working toward a 4th degree black belt in TKD. We just had lunch with a 5th degree BB in kung fu (I’m not sure how that compares) and she was telling us about the challenging process to get there. She’s been doing it (and teaching it) for a long time, too.

I hope life is treating you and Walt well.

>225 jnwelch: Hi Joe! Have no idea how TKD and Kungfu compare in terms of earning degrees, but good on your friend for 5th belt!!

Life has been good lately. We had our first Thanksgiving yesterday to make sure and include my oldest daughter (who is out of town this year and missed last year because she didn't feel comfortable with Covid). Take two will be on Thursday. We did steak for the first one and Turkey will be the entree for the second go round. : )

Hope you and yours are also well and that lots of good food is in your future!!

>226 alcottacre: Happy Monday, Stasia!!

>227 quondame: Busy? Yes. Admirable? Only sometimes!! LOL

>228 LovingLit: Well, today I wasn't busy. Here's the story....

We took an amazing hike on Sunday (more on that when I start my new thread 'cuz the pictures are beautiful!) and on the way back, we though we'd stop for dinner. And right next to the restaurant, was a pop-up COVID vaccination site. They were taking drive ups and the lady said,"We close in 5 minutes, are you in or out?" Hubby and I looked at each other and thought, it must be fate, why not?

And, of course, yesterday I held Thanksgiving #1 at my house. By the end of the day I was achy all over and had a fever.

Today I did nothing!! LOL. Hopefully I will be back to normal tomorrow.
