Hello All! Please forgive my dropping in on you like this, out of the blue, but I wanted to draw your attention to our October List of the Month, which is devoted to Scary Stories for the Season:
https://www.librarything.com/list/43246/all/Scary-Stories-for-the-Season
Although the Gothic is certainly not synonymous with "scary stories," I thought there might be some overlap, and I wanted to invite those of you who with an interest in this list, to contribute your top five titles.
Apologies if this is out of turn, I didn't see any prohibition on non-members posting new threads, in the group description.

Welcome! I've been thinking about this since yesterday, sometime. Not an easy question. I'll try my best, though.

Another problem is that I genuinely don't know any novel that matches the concentrated scariness of any number of the best short stories I've read.

>4 alaudacorax: It's true, that short stories can pack quite a punch. The original list idea was "scary/creepy stories," but I wanted to give it a catchy name. The books in question don't need to have "jump scares," but can be disturbing, frightening in parts, and so on.

As it stands, the list includes short story collections and at least one graphic novel and one non-fiction book.

Yes. I did it yesterday and once I saw that I felt happy to put three collections in my five.
