Let's read a crap book together! Judith Krantz perhaps?

How about Bridges of Madison County? Half Price Books has literally stacks of them for $1 each. I suggested they hawk them as bird cage liners.

This is about the only way I'm going to read The DaVinci Code.

Or perhaps Danielle Steel

Noooo, no Danielle Steele!
I mentioned Toni Morrison in my class the other night (12 adults, 25 -- 55 yo) and was met by blank, uncomrehending stares... but someone said they couldn't wait for summer break to catch up all their (shudders) Danielllllle Steeeele...

If we're going to do an awful lit group read, maybe we should pick something more "literature"-ish. Plus, I've taken a vow of abstience from romance and chick lit.

We could read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. It's just as terrible as The Davinci Code by a little less read.

#5: I was working in a B. Dalton "bookstore" when Terry McMillan's Waiting to Exhale came out. The more literary employees all thought we should wear badges that said "Morrison, not McMillan!!!"

Why don't we read a pretentious, pseudo-intellectual crap book and have a contest to see who can write the most pretentious, pseudo-intellectual crap review of the crap book?

#9: Have a look at the New York Times review of Mary Roach 's new book, Bonk, reviewed by former film critic Janet Maslin. It may not fit your criteria exactly but it's a hatchet job for sure. Mary Roach is worth at least one or two of Maslin!

#10: Thanks. Reading that review made me think that if a humorless stick-in-the-mud like Janet Maslin hated the book, then I would probably like it.

Me too! I never understood why Maslin switched from film to book reviewing. I guess the common thread is narratives, but it sticks in my craw all the same.

#12: Mary Roach was interviewed yesterday by Robert Siegel on NPR's All Things Considered. She was very funny. Even though Robert Siegel sounds to be about 800 years old, he understood her humor and kept right up with her. Compared to Janet Maslin, he seemed hip and happening. Very sad.

No, if we're going to something literature-ish, let's do a combo -- we can combine some members hatred of Jane Austen with all the A*W*F*U*L sequels that people seem to think are necessary ways to kill trees!

Wow, masochism, anyone?

Which Harry Potter most qualifies for this thread ?

I can't stand Harry Potter. Period.

If you want to read a really, really bad book then I suggest Dan Brown's latest book, "The Lost Symbol".

I managed to get to page 182 (there are 670 pages) before I decided that I'd rather pull my own teeth.

How about some "non-fiction" as well? I'd suggest The Secret.
