Hardback Children's Book About a Boy Searching for his Dog

As a child, I had an absolute favorite book my parents would read aloud to me at bedtime. Alas, they can't remember anything about it.

I think it was a 1950s or 1960s hardback children's book (although it could have been 1970s but I don't believe so). The cover was a muted green with a cloth-like texture (I think). The book was about a boy who lost his dog/puppy and had to go around his neighborhood looking for the puppy. I believe the hardcover was monochrome (faded green) and I remember the pages were monochrome (white and black). The artwork consisted of lines and I don't remember a lot of shading or anything unique about the artwork.

I have spent hours googling and searching on eBay-like stores.

I grew up with this old book in the early 1980s. I've worked in bookstores and volunteered at libraries during different stages in my life. I don't ever remember seeing another copy outside of my childhood.

Thank you ahead of time for any assistance you could provide. I have racked my brain about this for months.

Wrong plot, but were the illustrations like Glen Rounds's? Go find Hanka!.
Was it a picture book, chapter book or inbetween?

You guys are amazing. This is my first time on this site and I just wanted to thank you all for your help. Your suggestions are fantastic but I'm still searching for the mystery book. I know it existed. LOL It was a short book, about 20 pages or so. It was closer to a picture book (but with regular pages). Think the Berenstein bears or Seuss with a hand-drawn cartoon and a few pines of text. No rhyming that I can remember.

Do you guys have any other suggestions?

>2 bookel: The Hanka cover you shared looks amazing but it's a bit too complex for this book I'm remembering. It was thick-lined illustrations but much of the page seemed covered w/ the story and background images. Few words, think Berenstein Bears. About 20 pages.

>10 bookel: Bookel, you are too kind to spend so much time helping me. I went through your suggestions two times. Maybe the book I remember wasn't mass-produced. It probably didn't have an ISBN number. If you know of any more resources or websites like these, please let me know.
Thanks for all of your help!

Searched basic plot with "vintage book" and came up with The Little Lost Puppy. It's 1950 and none too common from the number of people with it on here.

>12 bookel: Wow! I just spent two days looking through Worldcat with anything w/ the word Dog on it 1950-1978, juvenile, etc. Since I don't know the title of the book, it's possible that dog isn't part of it. After spending time in that rabbit hole I started looking for "find" + "dog" as well as search and lost. Smaller rabbit holes. It's possible this book doesn't exist. Thank you so much for all of your time. If someone thinks of something wakey and new, please let me know. I'll keep searching.

Thanks for your efforts!

It exists, it can take years of searching. Worldcat often does not list plot of older picture books. You'd need to do a general search on dogs juvenile fiction with year range etc, check page number and find details on other sites.
Google Books Advanced Search is another place but more frusrating. You can search google for book reviews too eg. Bulletin for the center of children's books, Kirkus Reviews.

Well, I communicated w/ my parents and asked them if they remember the book. They did but couldn't remember the title. We spent an hour online searching for possible titles. They mentioned that it's possible the book was from the late 1940's or 1950's and most likely not the 60's. It was most likely something that my dad grew up with and I nabbed it from my grandparent's home. My parents valued education and rarely threw away a book. They will keep an eye out for it.

So make the year range 1945-1960 (or 1959).

Could it have been "Jed the Shepherd's Dog" by Agnes Sligh Turnbull, 1957? A current listing on eBay shows the muted green cover, and the illustrations/story match your details.
