Happy Summer Olympics! What 1001 books are assisting you in your pursuit of a gold medal in reading?

I've just finished Bartleby & Co and Jacob's Room. Since August is women in translation month, I hope to get to Astradeni.

Hmmm. I've had Transit by Anna Seghers (translated from German by Margot Bettauer Dembo) near the top of my TBR list for a while.

For the monthly challenge I will be reading The Invention of Curried Sausage by Uwe Timm.

I deserve a gold medal for reading something as boring as Cranford, but I suspect that the next book, Vilette, will be better, and uh, worth its weight in gold.

I wanted to read something nice and relaxing so I picked up A Tree Grows in Brooklyn which I wrongly thought was on the list. Ah well. I next intend to do The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick and based on the last Handke I read, I do not have high expectations.

I'm reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I don't know if I'll get a gold medal but Hunter S. Thompson probably would have won one if there was a category for how many drugs a person can combine with alcohol and still remain standing.

I'm reading the book that came up for me in the August Challenge, Go Tell It on the Mountain. So far, so good.

I had taken a significant break from reading off the 1001 list but am prepared to dive back in; perhaps more selectively. I just finished The Kreutzer Sonata by Leo Tolstoy which I found to be a fascinating psychological study of a man driven to murdering his wife by lust, jealously and a warped view of morality.

August is winding down for me with The Case of Comrade Tulayev and The Heat of the Day. Back to school on Monday!
