Unusual / Rare / Unique LEC finds

Hi
As promised I will post a few interesting finds I got in my large LEC purchase. I've also been discussing many of these with Carol Grossman (author of the LEC History book, if you don't have it, get it, it's a great resource) to get more info and history on the items. Photo's on my profile page

The first is a small booklet "For the Birds by George Macy" - This was printed for the Distaff Side at the Marchbanks Press. It seems to be rare, Carol has never seen one, although this is included in some larger other LEC related volumes. It is an funny anecdote about Bertha Goudy's part in the printing of LEC's Rip van Winkle. It is made more unique by notes in the margin from Joseph Weiler (Marchbank Press?) which are quite disparaging towards Macy, which is unusual considering the amount of work done by Marchbank Press for LEC. it includes notes "the ignorance of Macy George, often rouses up my gorge J.W." On last page he also identify himself as the designer and not Emily Conner, with more comments. An interesting find

Also a scare copy of the "uses of books" in a special cushion binding that allows you to use the book as a cushion, bit of a play by Macy and only a few got bound like this

I also have a leather bound copy of the Philosophy of Fine Books, 2000 were printed as season greetings as booklets, but 100 got bound like this as special gifts for family and friends and stated as such in the back

I have two copies of reform of paper currency, but one has quite a unique item included separately. with a hand written note in the margin, which is likely quite unique. The certificate is a design by WA Dwiggins on how stock certificates can be changed. However this one was used as part of an experiment with Clay H Hollister who was the long time president and old national bank. The note is supposedly written by his son Paul Hollister who was the vice president of current day Macy's. Photo of the note on my profile, but essentially they filled in the stock certificate and tried to cash it, successfully as an experiment. Supposedly making a lot of banking people quite angry. I still need to do more research but seems like a wonderful bit of WA Dwiggins and LEC history

I'll post more as I have time, if there are specific request also feel free to let me know.

Cheers
Christo

Thanks for taking the time to post about these discoveries.

The LEC Marcus Aurelius is an interesting case for me personally. I had a copy for a while (acquired cheaply sans slipcase). It was heavily foxed as well, despite just about everything else about the book being close to fine, but the foxing was so consistent and extensive that for a while I thought it was just the character of the paper!

I ended up selling that copy for a couple reasons. First, the foxing became distracting. Second, I decided the design was in the end a bit too literal for my taste. Marble papers over the boards, blind-stamped columns on the leather, etc. I get it George, it's the ancient world! I find the thematic connections work best for my taste when not so directly representative, and occasionally George went a bit too far in this regard, though (contrariwise?) one of the things I most like about the LEC books in general is how thoughtfully the overall designs, materials, and craftspeople connect to the subject matter.

That is a handsome copy of Rime. If by any chance that is one of the doubles, do let me know! I have been looking for a copy where the binding has been kept well.

>2 abysswalker:
I have hopefully pipped you to it by a few hours, I’m afraid. You’ll be amused to hear I have also put myself down for the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius!

>3 GusLogan: to the early bird!

It is probably for the best; I have had a number of acquisitions recently. Good to leave some powder dry. (Which is not to say I wouldn't jump on it if it is available...)

>4 abysswalker: I fear Gus is correct, I posted those photo's on his request and I believe he has secured Meditations and Rime just before you. There is however a list on my page of the books I'm looking to sell, most in similar great condition. Happy to post photo's of titles on request. They'll only be happy snaps with my iphone since I'm still working my way through with professional photos
