Adult Fiction, pub. 3-4 years ago

Main character is born after Civil War. Dad is a veteran of the war or a deserter. Drinks heavily. Mom was Mexican or Native American but died in childbirth or when main character was a young girl. Main character shares her hair and eye color. She has an older brother.

Bro teaches her to shoot their dad’s rifle. She has an excellent eye. Their dad is angry she was taught to shoot bc Nijmegen is supposed to touch his rifle.

Eventually dad dies. Girl is teen now. Life is hard but she has a horse. Unsuitable threatening suitor proposes..she runs away on horse and disguises herself as a man. Rides until she meets some influential man who she impresses with her crackshot, becomes a trickshooter under his employ. Becomes famous. Eventually she and others working for him decide to cross him- he’s corrupt. He never finds out she is a girl, I think. She and others have to flee bc he wants to kill them. Main character falls in love with influential bad dude’s girlfriend (I think). Woman loves her back, but then either the woman or both mai character and her lover both die. The horse also died I think.

Whiskey When We're Dry

Loved the writing in that one. The Which-Way Tree is another one you might enjoy -- they both start off with orphaned siblings left to fend for themselves and an epic Western adventure ensues, though Whiskey is more literary and Which-Way skews a lot funnier.
