Hi,

So I've been trying to find this book for a while. I think it's a series. The basic info that I remember about it is:

Basic plot (as much as I remember):

The female protagonist is an orphan, and grows up in some monastery like place (the area has something to do with religion, but its like a small village almost. It has a building for the kitchens, a main cathedral like place, where the arch bishop of the settlement lives, and I remember that there is a forbidden woods within the grounds, that the main character visits a lot). And there are multiple of these 'monasteries' in the world.

The main character grew up in the kitchens of this monastery, where she and her best friend (also an orphan I believe) would help the head baker/chef. At the back of the kitchen, there was a ladder leading to a type of loft area, where she and her friend would sleep. The main character discovers on her birthday (I'm thinking around 15 years old) that she can use magic (I don't think they call it magic in the world, but it essentially is magic), which is special because the magical ability is passed down through bloodline in this world.

One day, a magic knight (I have the word 'warden' in my mind, so this might be their official title, but I'm not sure) visits her monastery (I think it was on the arch bishop of the monasteries' birthday). Now, I think the warden discovers her in the kitchens using magic to do her chores, which puts her life in danger, because she has a birthmark that this person recognises, as we later find out that he either killed or was involved in the killing of her parents and the wiping out of her family. I think this warden tries to take her, but is stopped and gives the monastery an ultimatum date to release her to him. I think he threatens to destroy the monastery or something if they don't give her to him on his return.
She ends up running away, or at least leaves (I think to protect her home), and at a nearby town in an inn, she finds another magical knight, but of a lesser rank (I'll call them a ward) who helps her escape, because the warden comes searching for her at this town, after going to the monastery, and discovering she had run away.

Then basically, the protagonist and this ward go on an adventure trying to survive (sorry, I don't remember exactly what their end goal was, other than getting away from the warden trying to kill her).

I remember that final encounter of this book was between them, and an archer who was trying to kill them. I think they were in some grassy plains where they had camped the night, amid some stone ruins.

Another part of the book I remember, is the girl showing the ward this tomb in the forbidden forest, which he recognises as the tomb of a mage. I think he opens something using magic and finds the mage's book (either some diary or grimoire, or something of the kind.) I think this happens right at the end, but I'm not too sure.

There are some other bits and pieces I remember, like them having to travel through a swamp, him telling her about his family and his life at the academy. He also says something about the requirements for him to move up to the next rank of magic knight, or whatever its called.

Anyway, I really hope someone knows what this is :)

Thanks!

P.S.

I think I read this book around 2018
