A question on the counter

I haven't seen this answered elsewhere yet so I'll ask. What is the difference between "Fewer than 100 copies" and "Low Stock: 93 left"?

No guarantee but it could be how they account for any flux in inventory in any given moment. Books in carts, books in checkout, returned books, new shipments not yet shelved, etc. The static number could mean that everything is settled and the fewer warning could mean the true inventory is probably below 100.

‘Fewer than 100 copies’ is something I’ve generally seen in marketing materials. They don’t always start the counter on the website at 99, but generally the counter is added while 75+ copies remain and the counter is mostly accurate.

As noted in another thread, neither tells you whether the book will be reprinted immediately, in the future, or not at all, although in some cases you can request an email when a book is back in stock.

I should have been more specific. I see that The Three Musketeers was placed in the Last Chance to Buy page and is showing as Low Stock: 76 left. The LE that I am mulling, Gargantua and Pantagruel is not in the Last Chance to Buy and just says Fewer Than 100 Copies. My concern is that I log in one day and it is gone without the counter having counted down. Is this a valid concern?

>4 L.Bloom:

It's more likely that they will send an email around warning people that it's about to be gone, but in the end you can never be absolutely sure about that.

>4 L.Bloom: Valid for sure. Likely, not so sure. As someone mentioned, they’ll usually do kind of email announcement when it gets low - but that just accelerates the rate of sales.

Your best bet is to just purchase it now and not worry, but of course for various reasons that may not be possible.

>6 U_238: Hehe, I was sort of using the purchase as an incentive for myself to finish a certification I've been studying for.

>4 L.Bloom: if other low stock LEs are any indication, Folio will probably include an explicit counter at some point, but I’m not sure how consistent Folio is in this regard.

For example, the listing for Othello notes 22 copies remaining.
