Ok, here's an update:
My younger daughter was able to leave the hospital on Thursday. She is doing well under the circumstances. She will now need time until she is back to full strength, that was no different for me after my gallbladder removal.
Thomas drove to Davos on Wednesday because the surgeon who had operated on him in February called him for a follow-up check. Thomas went by train, with a book and his mobile phone, to Davos. In the course of the afternoon he called me to tell me that they would keep him in the hospital and that he would be operated on again on Thursday morning because a piece of bone had splintered off. He also asked if I could send him the charging cable for his mobile phone; he could still buy underwear, T-shirts and books in Davos. Ok, I made a package with the electronic items and wanted to mail it to him. Unfortunately, this was not possible, because everything is reduced due to Easter and express nothing at all. I tried DHL, but this did not work either. I called our telephone provider because I knew that they had a branch in Davos, but I also got a rejection because the shop in Davos works as a franchising company and therefore couldn't bill for it. So I called a shop in Davos where we shop very often when we are in Davos and I knew that they had a department with electronic things. The lady was very helpful. She told me that she had everything on site and gave me the phone number of a small taxi operator. He picked up the ordered goods, brought them to the hospital and Thomas was able to pay him. Thomas OP went well and if everything goes well, he can leave the hospital tomorrow, Sunday.
Yesterday I had the feeling to be able to breathe deeply for the first time when I received the message from my father (he lives in Thailand) via whatssapp that he would like to happily share with us all that he got married on April 2nd. You can all imagine that I, but also my siblings, are not at all enthusiastic. Tonight my siblings, their partners, Thomas and I will have a conference call.
So, this is the latest from my front.

I wish you all a relaxing Easter.

book 17 ♫ Read in German

 The Outsider

This Stephen King crime thriller was also great. As with the Bill Hodges Trilogy, there is a lot of paranormal and Holy also made an important contribution to solving the case.
It all started with an arrest carried out by an avid police officer and an equally ambitious prosecutor. But, as always, appearances are deceptive, the watertight evidence is crumbling, doubts arise and while government officials are still holding on to their evidence, people are dying. Holy tries to open the eyes of the police officer, but that takes time.
It was very exciting from the start. I highly recommend it.

book 18 Read in German

 The Hit

The second volume of the Will Robie series was also gripping. I couldn't put the book aside.
Will gets the job of taking out a colleague because she is suspected of killing important people in the agency. Will can hardly imagine why she is doing this, but over time he finds that she has a mission to eliminate traitors from within the agency. Will supports her in this. They are in constant danger, they can't trust anyone, only Vance, Will's FBI contact is on their side.
There are many dead and Will is also afraid for Julie, since she is his Achilles heel.

Hi Barbara! Happy new thread. Lovely photos.

From your last thread, Extraordinary People was on my shelves, just waiting for the right time, and I’ve moved it onto my desk so that I might open it soon. I’m so glad Odds Against worked well for you. 4.5 stars, impressive.

>5 Ameise1: I’m so sorry Thomas had to have another operation. You were persistent and diligent in getting him the charger he needed – it just shouldn’t have been that hard. I’m glad your daughter left the hospital and is slowly recovering.

Yikes about your father getting married. I know that this is a sore subject with you and hope that the family conference call can either bring relief to the stress and frustration or leave you all feeling better about the whole thing.

>6 Ameise1: I read this one in 2018 and agree, it was quite good.

You've got way too much going on, and I hope things can settle down a bit. You've been reading some good books, though, and I hope that's a good escape for you.

It looks like Thomas can come home tomorrow. I'll talk to him on the phone tonight.
Yes, my father is a number of its own. My brother will speak to him on the phone tomorrow. Maybe then we'll see more clearly.
Definitely, books help to switch off during these times. I just wish I had more time and energy to be on LT more.

>12 PaulCranswick: Thank you Paul. It is not difficult to post beautiful photos of Zurich, because there are many beautiful corners here. Maybe you will find your way here one day.

>13 scaifea: Thank you, Amber. Yes, it was actually an adventure until I found a way to get Thomas the charging cables. Fortunately, there are always nice people somewhere who can help you. Thomas gave the taxi driver a generous tip and I called him again to thank him.

Hi Barbara my dear, sorry to hear that Thomas had to have further surgery and hope he comes home tomorrow. What a performance you had with the charging cable but a good end with the folks in Davos who sorted things out for you and Thomas.

Hope that the family conference call went well, your Father sounds like a real character but what a way to share news.

Thank you for sharing the gorgeous pics.

All the best to your daughter and your husband. It's great that there are still stores that care about customer satisfaction.

Dear friends, thank you very much for your kind words. Thomas came back home on Easter Sunday. Unfortunately he is still immobile and it will take a while. He's fed up with it now, because he can't do anything. He is a loyal customer of our local library because he reads a lot. He has to go back to Davos to see his surgeon for a check-up on Wednesday, April 28. This time he has to take the hand luggage trolley with the most essential utensils with him because I don't feel like organizing everything again if they keep him in Davos.
Professionally, it is a little easier for me thanks to the wonderful students from the pedagogical college. Unfortunately, my teammate and I have big problems with our new school special education teacher. We are now getting support from our headmaster and he is already looking for someone else.
After the spring break, our school starts weekly mass testing. Depending on how many Covid cases are found, individual classes are quarantined or only individual children.
At least I was able to register for the Covid vaccination. But it will certainly be the middle to the end of May before I can arrange a vaccination appointment. At the moment it is still the turn of the vulnerable person, 65+ and the health worker. A few days ago we learned that only a fifth of the vaccine doses ordered for April were delivered to Switzerland. From this you can easily see that everything will take a long time.
I will spend the spring break, which starts on May 1st, at home.

31Ameise1
Avr 20, 2021, 7:30 am

Zurich has its charm in every season. After the long winter months, everyone is always happy when the first flowers and trees bloom. The restaurant, café and bar terraces have been allowed to be open again since yesterday. Even if everyone was waiting for it, I hope that the number of Covid cases does not skyrocket. Thomas and I enjoy our garden and will only go out to drink or eat something when we are vaccinated. Ergo, at the earliest in summer.

book 19

 The Babylon Idol

This was the first book in the Ben Hope series that I read.
It contains everything a suspenseful thriller should contain. An ex SAS major and his friends, archaeological excavations, the chaos of war in the Middle East and a villain from the highest ecclesiastical circles.
While repairing a fence in Normandy, Ben Hope's friend is seriously injured. Who was this attack on? Who is behind it? Hope soon realizes that the past has caught up with him and that the former Bishop of Milan is behind it. But until he finds his trail, more people and friends from the past are dying in mortal danger.
Hope can only catch the villain when he travels to Iran with an archeologist friend to find the statue of Babylon. They get from one ambush to the next.

book 20 Read in German

 Der Fluch vom Gardasee

An exciting thriller in the region of Lake Garda in northern Italy. If you know the Alps, you can very well imagine how people tick in the remote valleys and thanks to Lake Garda, the Mediterranean feeling, with all the fine food, is not neglected.
A dead man is found in his apartment in a small village in a side valley of Lake Garda. He was literally executed. He is holding a book that says there will be more murders. Soon the journalist Luca and the inspector Tomasio Giancarlo have to find out that everything will happen because another murder is already happening. Who is behind it? And what is the cause?

book 21 Read in German

 An Uncertain Place

I love the Chief Inspector Adamsberg series. This book was the best I have read from this series so far.
Adamsberg has to investigate a brutal murder case. The corpse is dismembered as if it had passed through a chopper several times. Who could the killer be? Even if the murder appears brutal, all of the side scenes are often a smile. Adamsberg more than lives up to his character as a dreamer and sensitive person. He also gets an unexpected addition to the family and his heart for animals also comes into play.
A great book that I highly recommend.

book 22 Read in German

 Death Distilled

Photojournalist Abi Logan is back in her adopted home in the Scottish Highlands. She actually just wants to relax, but a body is found on the pub's property that has been buried there for years. Your friend Patrick now works for a whiskey magazine. So that this gets more readers, he would like to hold a whiskey tasting for the Japanese in Abis and Grant's distillery, which Grant does not exactly please. Then Abi meets her teen idol, an old rock musician who is in dire straits because one of his old band members is already dead, another is in a coma and a technician dies during a performance.
She also finds an old script in her house that sheds light on the darkness, as it was in the town about two hundred years ago. And then she is expanding her household with 'sweaters on four legs'
A great cozy mystery.

Eureka, signs and wonders are still happening, it's like Christmas, Easter and a birthday together. I went to see my beautician today. During the treatment, she told me that she still had to make a phone call. What I didn't know was that she called her husband, who is a gastroentologist, and asked him if he still had a 'residual dose' this week. And yes, I am the winner. The day after tomorrow I will receive my first Covid-19 vaccination (Moderna).

Exciting news about your vaccination. I expect to be vaccinated somewhere in June. Right now the people with chronic disease and 65+ are being vaccinated and then, unless some other groups get priority, people will be vaccinated according to their age from 64 and downwards. But meanwhile, everyone can also inscribe on a list that is used when there are vaccines left because people did not show up or were not able to make it to the vaccination-centre. Then you get a message or a call to ask if you can come the same day. This way, vaccines are not lost and you can get vaccinated quicker. The system seems to be working well, but I'm not really counting on getting vaccinated sooner. I'm more worried about people losing their patience and doing crazy things while the virus is still so virulent.

Good luck with getting vaccinated today!

It sounds like Thomas' healing process is straining and painful. I am very sorry to hear that!
Hopefully the checkup brings good news! Have a lovely start of the week!

I know how hard it can be to stay patient during recovery, and how important it is that you not lose sight of taking care of yourself. I hope your reading is helping sustain you.

Dear friends, a lot has happened since I was last here.

First off, yes, I read but didn't write a note about a single book (shame on me). I will post the list of books I have read afterwards.

Thomas is much better again. He's been back at work for ten days. At the beginning it was more of an 'ordeal', but things are getting better every day. He's turning sixty next Saturday and we're going to have a small family celebration at our home.

Covid-19:
Thomas and I are both vaccinated twice. But I had to deserve both vaccinations 'hard'. The first time I had the feeling that a whole company had used my upper arm as a punching bag. With the second vaccination I had the whole program with a 36 hour flu (including delirium) and the upper arm pain lasted for two weeks, so I even had to take ibuprofen. But now everything is ok.
My sister spent April in the hospital (covid-19). She doesn't have much memories of how she was there. Now she is fighting her way back step by step.

The most wonderful news:
Our older daughter Isabelle announced two weeks ago that we were going to be grandparents. For several days I only played joyful dances on the floor.

Now we have four working weeks left before the summer vacation begins.

I hope you are all well.

book 39 Read in German

 Isländisch Roulette

It was an exciting story, full of everything that Icelandic crime novels have to offer. Unfortunately, the language was rather very simple, so it still had to be fine-tuned.
Murder, greed, financial crisis An Iceland thriller against the background of the first major world financial crisis of the noughties, which brought the small north country to the brink of ruin. Thorvaldsson vividly paints a picture of the super-rich society, which before the collapse knew no boundaries in its striving for power.

book 40 ♫ Read in German

 The Clockmaker's Daughter

A very exciting story. What fascinated me the most was that during various epochs the plot switched back and forth.
Birchwood Manor 1862: The talented Edward Radcliffe invites artist friends to his country house on the Thames. But the auspicious summer ends in tragedy - one woman disappears, another dies, and Radcliffe's life is ruined.

A hundred and fifty years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist from London, discovers the sepia photograph of a stunningly beautiful woman and the drawing of a house with two gables on a river. Why is the house so familiar to Elodie? And who is the fascinating woman in the photo? Will she ever reveal her secret?

book 41 Read in German

 Die Akademiemorde

Scary things happen. Eight members of the Swedish Nobel Prize for Literature Committee are killed within a few days. Who has something against these members? Why are these members of all people murdered and the others not? A race against time begins. The police are groping in the dark, except for a commissioner who is very unpopular in the police force, especially in the executive suite, for her unorthodox thinking and acting. With the help of an old friend who is a book antiquarian and his connections, she tracks down the murderer. But she has to do everything without the help of the police, as she is advertised for a manhunt.
Incredibly exciting and varied, with comments on Nobel Prize winners and why the Academy chose them.

Dear friends
I'm fine, you don't need to worry about my health. Life is just a little too hectic and I have to choose between reading and social media. Professionally, we are strict with all the Covid restrictions and that's why I'm dead tired when I come home from work in the evening.
Thank you very much for your congratulations on my birthday. I will certainly never forget this 60th. In the morning I had a further education and in the afternoon our eldest Isabelle and Marc had their civil wedding. The big party will be next summer when the baby arrives and Isabelle had her 30th birthday.

We celebrated my birthday last Saturday. We were in the Frida Kahlo light show and afterwards we enjoyed an excellent dinner.
Since yesterday I am in my favorite wellness hotel in the Black Forest. It is the first time in two years that I have traveled across the country's border.
We spent the summer vacation at the end of July in the Jura. We had rented a great holiday home on the Chasseral. Our daughters also came for a few days.

So, now I'm trying to update what I've read. I discovered new series and continued old ones. More on that later.

I love you all, but I cannot promise that I will have more time to be active on LT until the end of the year.

book 69 Read in German

Cold Case - Das verschwundene Mädchen

I love nordic crime novels and thrillers. This is the first band from the Cold Case and grabbed me from the start.
On the one hand, the Cold Case investigator Tess Hjalmarsson solves the disappearance of a young woman years ago, on the other hand she is involved in the middle of a current series of murders. Deer Killer ambushes women early in the morning. He ambushes middle-aged women in their homes. He kills them - and disappears. Is it the same perpetrator who dealt with the young woman's case years earlier?
It's a race against time.

book 70

 Spook Street

The fourth volume in the Slough House series didn't disappoint either. Actually, all employees are on the sidelines and yet it is they who make British intelligence look old.
This time, too, an employee is the main character and yet everyone is involved. River Cartwright is found dead in his grandfather's bathroom. Jackson Lamb quickly realizes that the dead man is not River, but does not make a big announcement. River has since gone to France to find out why someone wants to kill their grandfather. In doing so, he discovers his own roots, which he doesn't like at all. Various killers are set on him. Patrice in particular makes life difficult for him and his colleagues from Slough House.
As always, it was engaging from the first to the last page.

book 71 Read in German

 Der Bote

The second volume in the Fredrik Beier series was also very impressive and exciting. After Beier was injured at the end of the first volume, he is now returning to the police force. Still grumpy with himself and the environment, he sees a traitor behind every person, even those who are close to him and love him.
As with the first book, the author switches between different times. This time from the beginning of the 90s to today. After the Cold War, there was a lot going on on the border between Norway and Russia in the far north, as it was rumored that the Russians had a biological weapons laboratory. Some Norwegian soldiers from a special unit were investigating this case. Why do these men and women have to die brutally now?
His loved ones and best colleagues are also worried about Beier and end up in mortal danger.

The second volume of Tommy Bergmann series is again very captivating. In this case, too, there are connections to earlier times, when Bergmann was still a young police officer. A young woman was found brutally mutilated at the time. Similar murders followed and someone was arrested for it. Well, 16 years later, another corpse is murdered in the same way. The murderer is in psychiatric solitary confinement. Who can this be?
Bergmann bites in this case. His team secretly helps him because you don't know who from the authorities you can still trust. Bergmann struggles with bournout symptoms, not only because he is getting closer and closer to the murderer but also because he learns more about his own past and feels infinitely lonely.
He is in great danger, but even his closest allies must expect death at any time.

Thank you so much Rdear, Mark and Roni. The first week of school is over, strict as always. In my free time I started knitting baby socks, caps and jackets for my future grandson.
I have just read one book that I will discuss shortly.
Autumn has arrived with us. Everything is coloured, in the morning thick fog and a lot of wind. The next week we have our traditional Räbenliechtli parade (lanterns made from beets). That means we are allowed to carve a lot so that everything is ready for the parade on Thursday.

book 73 Read in German

 The Kill List

This was yet another Forsyth that was captivating from start to finish.
In the USA and Great Britain people are being killed 'indiscriminately' by Islamist terrorists who then take their own lives. What do these murders have in common? What's behind it?
Soon a special anti-terrorist unit notices that all the perpetrators on the Internet were watching a preacher calling on men to kill infidels.
Who is this preacher? An intensive search with not always legal means begins. The journey leads from America, to England, to Pakistan and to Cape Horn.

book 74 ♫ Read in German

 Bluthaus

After her last fall, Frida Paulsen is recovering in the Elbmarsch when she receives a cry for help from her old friend Jo. Last night Jo found the body of a woman in the march and is now convinced that she is suspected of murder. Shortly afterwards it disappears without a trace. Worried, Frida goes in search of her friend. The trail leads to a lonely house on the Holnis peninsula, which the islanders only call the Bluthus (blood house). Many years ago a family was cruelly executed there - the perpetrator was never found.
The story switches between the present time and the time many years ago. Frida also learns a lot about her friend Jo.
While Frida puts himself more and more in danger, her work partner fights for his daughter's life and ignores Frida's calls for help until it is almost too late.
It was a great read again. Exciting from the first to the last page and it really grabbed me. I am glad that the author has already written two more volumes in this series.

Two satisfying reads in a row. I'm very glad! I just read a five-star book: The Colour of Milk, which is both short and powerfully told.

Beet-lanterns! I understood the lanterns to be *turnips* not beets but the color of the beet is perfectly suited to the season.

Sending hugs!

As the old year wanes;
All that now remains
Is to bring you good cheer
With wine, liquor or beer
And wish you a special new year.
