I honestly don't recall when I read this book--sometime in the last 20 years?
All I can recall is it starts with a character who is a soldier on a planet that is constantly at war. Except having soldiers actually die is wasteful, so weapons essentially just leave chalk marks and if you receive a "killing blow", you're out of the battle until the next day. The character is tired of doing the same thing day after day and wants to leave the planet.
It's a male character. I think a female character with a spaceship then appears and that's the catalyst for him being able to leave the planet...but I could be wrong.
I think I never finished the book. I wasn't in the mood for a space/sci-fi, so I put it down. But now I want to try it again. I will appreciate any help with this. Thank you!
