I always wanted a date with Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey. Urbane, humorous, kindly, and a good dancer.

> lol,Tess. I never took to Heathcliff, preferred Mr Rochester though he wasan odd sort even without hiding a mad wife in the Attic.
Afraid I would have to start a harem, couldnt do with just one.
I love the Duke of Avon,in These Old ShadesPlus several other of Heyer's delightful heroes.
I fell for John Carter of Mars when I first met him age 13. Talk, dark, grey eyed, southern gentleman. Him being totally naked all the time was a bit disconcerting then.....perhaps not so much now? :0)
All of the Vorkosigan family, especially Miles of course.
Horatio Hornblower,I love a gallant hero.
Prince Corwin from Nine Princes in Amber Wish he'd give up smoking though...
Oops, knew it,once started couldnt stop and most people may not reconize some of my choices, but that was fun! :0)

There are more: Noah Calhoun in the The Notebook, Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind, and Father de Bricassart in The Thorn Birds.

>1 Tess_W: I think I would really like to meet Vasilisa Petrovna, from The Winternight trilogy (The Bear and the Nightingale, The Girl in the Tower, and The Winter of the Witch.) She is smart, courageous, supremely self confident, and is deeply in tune with, but not controlled by, the spirits and energies of place, of life and destiny. I would love to hear, from her own lips, her views on just about anything! I would love to see, albeit dimly, something of what she kens, literally sees. But first, I’d have to learn Russian.

I think I'd choose Clare Fergusson, the heroine of Julia Spencer-Fleming's mystery series. Clare is an Episcopal priest who's often in some sort of trouble with her bishop; a former military helicopter pilot; a wonderfully considerate person who just happens to trip over corpses or get drawn into solving mysteries.

But then there's Thursday Next, who might be just as wonderful...

>6 TempleCat: Vasya is a fascinating choice. I agree with your description of her. Perhaps if we're meeting these people at all, we can stipulate that somehow there's no language barrier.

>1 Tess_W: Armand Gamache, the protagonist in the murder mysteries by Louise Penny, who works for the Quebec Province Surete. He faces THE most realistic moral and professional dilemmas and meets them like a champ — humane, thoughtful and soulful. Also likes a good meal and a nice drink, and really loves his wife and children (now grown).

I would like to meet Peter Grant from the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. He does magic and sees ghosts. I'd like to meet his boss Nightengale also.

Jack Aubrey from from Patrick O'Brian's wonderful Aubrey/Maturin series. He is bold and brave, slightly foolish, but cares deeply about his crew and is broad minded enough to make a good friend of Stephen Maturin, who I would also like to meet, maybe meet both of them over a dish of soused pig-face and lots of wine to make it go down.

>11 scunliffe: Personally, I think Maturin would be the more interesting person to chat with.
