I visited a dormant thread today, and ended up making a new post. Before then, I noticed several references in different posts (using the ">" function) were pointed to the wrong post in the thread. Several, in fact, were currently pointing to posts later in the thread, which presumably would not have been there at the time cited.
I know this happens on occasion (I've done it myself), but there are multiple instances of it in this thread, and several users agree that was not the case originally.
Another (related) observation: one user viewing the thread today noticed all posts were marked "unread" when in fact, the entire thread had been read already by that user.
Is it possible two (2) posts early in the thread were deleted somehow? Can that be verified in LT archives?
Details are noted in Posts 15 - 18 of the thread itself:

While this is somewhat sideways to your main point, it's entirely possible to cite a post that doesn't yet exist, either from a slip of the fingers or just being silly.
That said, the timeframe in question means it's almost certainly the August 2017 issue:

(Most of the discussion in that thread is about books, but Tim mentions in the first post, and I remember from the discussions at the time, that Talk was affected as well.

I did check the database, and nothing had been marked as deleted for that post. But it sounds like this was probably due to the issue referenced above, so I will close this. Please let us know if you see any problems in topics outside that time frame.
