It's been a year (or so) of staying-at-home social-distancing. What 1001 books are you reading to escape?

I am trying to finish The Eclipse of the Crescent Moon (what a weird book!) which has taken me to someplace in Hungary and also, briefly, to Constantinople. Once the siege is over, I can start the March group read.

I've finished Dead souls and am about to start The Robber Bride.
4Henrik_Madsen
I'm about half way through The Book of Evidence which annoys me quite a bit. "Priviledged White Man Feeeling Sorry for himself" seems like a more apt title at this point.

I'm still feeling kind of dirty after my stay in Frederick Montgomory's mind, so reading Persuasion is like mental wellness.

I am also reading The Book of Evidence but it hasn't annoyed me as much as it did Henrik_Madsen. We'll see.
8arukiyomi
Just started The Double which is wonderful. Got to love Saramago. Also reading Empire of the Sun to Mrs Arukiyomi.

Recently finished Gormenghast, by Mervyn Peake - it's the second of the Gormenghast trilogy. After a slow start, it galloped off and was glorious, in line with the glorious weirdness of the first one, Titus Groan.
I moved from that to These Is My Words, which wasn't bad, just predictable.
I've started The Book Thief, which so far is enjoyable.

I decided to skip The Book of Evidence, but I am reading Effi Briest.

I finished The Book of Evidence last night. I liked the writing quite a bit.
I started Testament of Youth on Thursday.

>12 arukiyomi: Couldn't agree more!
I think part of the reason for its relative obscurity is the apparent problem booksellers have with defining it. The books defy regular categories, and seem to be regarded as a cross between fantasy (they aren't) and science fiction (they aren't).
Mervyn Peake was an amazing writer.

I am also reading The Book of Evidence, and I also want to get to Kidnapped this month as well.

I am now reading The Beggar Maid which is getting less good as it goes along. Kind of a disappointment, really. After this I'm planning to read Rebecca because I succeeded in convincing my book club that we should read this 1001-er that I had not yet read!
16Henrik_Madsen
I read Ragtime which was really good. So is The Bell Jar which will be my #200 from the list.

>16 Henrik_Madsen: Congrats on 200!
I'm reading The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. It started out really strong, but it's so long and my interest in waning as she moves through the generations of the family.
