Found: YA Dystopian- kids leave underground society

Posting for my teenager who's trying to remember this book. It was about people who lived in an underground society because aboveground was inhospitable for some reason. Two teens (maybe) tried to find their way out because they found out aboveground was actually fine (they had been lied to) and animals were there again. They had to go through a series of rooms one was full of water or something. May have been steampunk in style. That's all he remembers- anybody know this one?

It was recent- he read about four years ago.
