The longlist for this year's Canada Reads has been announced (https://www.cbc.ca/books/canadareads/here-is-the-canada-reads-2021-longlist-1.5860927?ref=PRH9473DB69C13C&linkid=PRH9473DB69C13C&cdi=23CF0F99B6102BF3E0534FD66B0A902E&template_id=19522&aid=randohouseinc47835-20):
Yiddish for Pirates by Gary Barwin
All Together Now by Alan Doyle
Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi
Autopsy of a Boring Wife by Marie-Renee Lavoie
Two Trees Make a Forest by Jessica Lee
Dirty Birds by Morgan Murray
The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O'Neill
The Midnight Bargain by C. L. Polk
Tatouine by Jean-Christophe Rehel
Thunder Through my Veins by Gregory Scofield
Wendy, Master of Art by Walter Scott
You Are Eating an Orange You are Naked by Sheung-King
Tilly and the Crazy Eights by Monique Gray Smith
Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots
Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead
The only one I have read is Lonely Hearts Hotel which I enjoyed. Several others are on lists of reviews that have interested me:
Jonny Appleseed, Thunder Through my Veins, and Butter Honey Pig Bread. And the description of Tilly and the Crazy Eights from CBC makes it sound interesting. So if my wishes count for anything those are the 5 I would like to see picked but I'll probably be lucky if one or two make it to the short list which will be announced on January 14th.
Anyone read anything on this list? Anything that you are hoping to read? Other comments?

I have read Yiddish for Pirates, and The Lonely Hearts Hotel- both excellent.

I've not read any on them, but I'll have a look. Thanks for posting these, gypsymom.

>5 LynnB: The shortlist has been announced:
The Midnight Bargain by C. L. Polk championed by Olympian Rosey Edeh
Two Trees Make a Forest by Jessica J. Lee championed by singer-songwriter Scott Helman
Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead championed by actor Devery Jacobs
Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots championed by actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee
Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi championed by chef Roger Mooking
So only one nonfiction (Two Trees Make a Forest) in the mix but it sounds pretty interesting. I have not read any of them but as I predicted two of the ones from the long list are on the short list so I'll try to get those read before the debates.

The Midnight Bargain doesn't interest me much, but I'll read all five as I always do. I find I like having read them before the debates....gives me something to yell at the radio about. My dad used to yell at the TV during Hockey Night in Canada...he'd be proud of me!

I haven't read any of the shortlist, but at least I already own Jonny Appleseed so I can get started. What is the theme this year?

The theme this year is " One Book to Transport Us." Here is a link to the CBC article. https://www.cbc.ca/books/canadareads/meet-the-canada-reads-2021-contenders-1.586...

Long list:
The only one I've read is "The Lonely Hearts Hotel". Well, I listened to the audio and didn't like it.
I have the Alan Doyle on my tbr (the audio - read by him - of another of his, I LOVED!).
I haven't looked at the descriptions of the others, but I haven't heard of any of them, nor the authors.

I always look forward to Canada Reads. I especially enjoy the “amateur” panel, all a little out of their element, heartily doing their best. Sometimes the judging is a bit of a gong show, but that’s part of the fun.
I haven’t read any of this year’s short list, and the only title I would naturally pick off a shelf for myself would be Two Trees Make a Forest. I’ll give the others a go, though, as I always enjoy being stretched a little. I’m happy there is a range.
I suspect Jonny Appleseed might be a little...raw...for my taste. I look forward to listening about it, though, and imagine it will provoke the most reaction.

I'm launching my Canada Reads binge with The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk. Not the kind of book I'd normally read.
I hope the debates are better than last year...I didn't like the panel much last year.
