Welcome to the 2021 Challenge! Watch this space for announcements and info about the group.
2laytonwoman3rd
Here's an announcement: Thanks a centibillion (new word I learned today) to Jim for taking on the challenge of getting this group up and running for yet another year. It ain't rocket science, like his real job, but it is so important in my life that I can't imagine doing without it. And it's a lot of work.
3scaifea
>2 laytonwoman3rd: Hear! hear!

Thanks! I think I've got all the new group-level threads up and running. Time to start making individual threads!
And... we need a cool group picture!

>2 laytonwoman3rd: I couldn't agree more. A big thanks to you, Jim.

For those who'd like to participate, The General Discussion Thread for the 2021 American Authors Challenge is up and ready. I'll be working on January's theme thread in the next few days.

Yay! So glad the new group is up! Thank you, Jim, for being the patron saint of the group. It's a haven I come back to year after year, even if I haven't participated much in a decade. But hey, 2021 is a new year! And this group is always a great place to be!!
13amanda4242
>1 drneutron: Thank you so much for setting up the group! This is probably my favorite spot on the whole internet.
And despite being in existence for only a day, this group is already the second most active on LT!

Is someone creating a little square icon for our group? Every time I go to the groups page, it looks so lonely without one!
17avatiakh
For those interested there are several group reads happening over in the category challenge group. I've just set up a thread there for the year long read of Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. We welcome members of other groups to join us.
18lauralkeet
There is currently a bug that prevents continuing a thread. It's been logged in the Bug Collectors group and is believed to be part of the new LT Groups redesign.
Incidentally, if you're interested in the new LT Groups design, you can read and talk about it on the thread below. Jim (drneutron) is already over there doing a great job of representing the 75ers!

>18 lauralkeet: Thanks for posting this - looks like the revamp is generating lots of discussion, as usual. One change that will probably come is that the group home page may have a section in the right hand column for links like the author pages do. I'll be moving the Threadbook and Group Wiki links there if so - under the new design, the group intro text is longer than the default display, so getting to those links requires one to click on a "More" button.

Two changes are coming up to the Group page:
- Group admins will be able to pin topics to the top of the message list on the Group page. I plan to pin the Welcome to New Friends and Message Board topics. Don't want to pin too many because that'll be too crowded, but am willing consider suggestions for pinning others.
- There will be a section on the right where I can post links. I plan to put the Threadbook and Group Wiki links there. Any others that I should consider (for example, TIOLI?)

Bouncing in from my delayed first thread post.
I did a "last" post on a new 2020 thread so I could let everyone know what I needed: to take a break from craziness! I was having an overwhelming need to disconnect for awhile.
So my thread is here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/328926#n7394039
assuming I copied the correct url.
Thanks again Jim. And for what it's worth, being an admin on the ever-changing software developments here *is* rocket science!

A group read for The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold is also ongoing this month over in the Green Dragon group.
28KellyYoungBWS
Hey guys! What will be the next book?
29Majel-Susan
>28 KellyYoungBWS: Hi Kelly! I'm currently reading The Dark Is Rising and The Curse of Chalion.
But are you looking for more group reads or to share what you're reading with the rest of the community? What kind of books are you interested in?

Un message de votre administrateur de groupeFor those who haven't been following the site news, Tim and company have added a number of abilities for the group admins. These are intended to let groups have more influence on managing issues that arise in groups without having to rely on LT staff to step in. Specifically, I now have the ability to ban members of a group and hide/remove posts, with an appeal to staff available to the member if they choose to exercise it.
I wanted to (i) try out the new feature that lets me post messages as group admin and (ii) share my thoughts on this new responsibility. Generally, our group has been a pretty peaceful place, and those few times where conflict has occurred, we've been able to sort it out without the problems other groups have seen with posting wars and such. I have confidence we'll continue in that way. My basic philosophy here is one of light touch - I'll only step in as administrator as a last resort. I follow all the threads in this group, however I might not see an issue right away if it occurs. Feel free to PM me if you want to bring something to my attention or discuss an issue.
Most of all, I want us to have fun and enjoy each others' company, and am sure we'll keep dong just that! Just in case, though, remember I can me bought with snacks... 😀

Hey, people, the science fiction convention BOSKONE is this weekend, it's virtual and it's only $25 with access to recordings of all the panels for a month afterwards in case you didn't make them live. Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, Jane Yolen, Ursula Vernon, Joe Abercrombie--looks like a good one!

I'm just wondering, Jim, if you should move the links to the wiki and thread list up? For me, at least, they fall below the 'see more' box and newbies may not think to look there.
59connie53
>58 humouress: They do for me too.
60drneutron
Yeah, one of the few things I don't like about the new LT changes is the shortened group description. I haven't changed it yet because Tim indicated that they were going to add the ability to house group links over in the right column, which would save the problem. Haven't seen that implemented yet, so I guess I need to assume it's not coming soon...
61drneutron
Un message de votre administrateur de groupeI've trimmed the group description so that the group wiki links are available without having to click the "Show More" button. Hopefully this makes it a bit more convenient for folks!
