THE DEEP ONES: Winter 2021 Discussion Schedule

6-Jan "Mr. Justice Harbottle" by J. Sheridan Le Fanu (1872)
13-Jan "The Inmost Light" by Arthur Machen (1894)
20-Jan "The Dissection" by Georg Heym (1913)
27-Jan "The Lusitania Waits" by Alfred Noyes (1918)
3-Feb "Polaris" by H.P. Lovecraft (1920)
10-Feb "The Colossus of Ylourgne" by Clark Ashton Smith (1934)
17-Feb "The Letters of Cold Fire" by Manly Wade Wellman (1944)
24-Feb "My Dear Emily" by Joanna Russ (1962)
3-Mar "The Mine on Yuggoth" by Ramsey Campbell (1964)
10-Mar "The Warder of Knowledge" by Richard F. Searight (1992)
17-Mar "The Snow Pavilion" by Angela Carter (1995)
24-Mar "Yellow and Red" by Tanith Lee (1998)
31-Mar "The Dead Kid" by Darrell Schweitzer (2002)

There were 5 nominators and at least 12 selectors. The Le Fanu was the top vote-getter with 10 net, and there was a clean cutoff at 7 net votes to qualify. Nominations continued sparse, with one fewer than last quarter and only two more than we had weeks to fill. Still, I don't think the well is running dry for this stuff.

Less of a mid-century drought this time, with two '60s stories. Still, the 1964-92 gap is still by some margin the longest.

Is this the same Richard F. Searight as whose "The Sealed Casket" we did back in '17? There's no less than 57 years between the publication dates of the two stories.

Assuming it's the same guy, new authors to me would be Heym, Noyes, and Russ (we've done a Russ story before but I missed it).

Thanks, as ever, to paradoxosalpha for keeping the wheels turning!

Yes, the story for this quarter was published posthumously. The MS had been read by HPL. This case is one where OPD is maybe not the ideal sequencing criterion.

Not offered to excuse myself so much as to voice agreement with the idea the well is not running dry -- my COVID-adjusted schedule (work, social, household) definitely impacts my availability. I've managed to read about the same as pre-pandemic, but reading-adjacent activities have suffered: my LT reviews, for one, and following through on ideas for nominations or posting here on stories read, for another. I suppose I hope that's true for others more than that we're seeing a falling-off in interest.

In any case, I also acknowledge the infrastructure work done by paradoxosalpha and @KentonSem, especially. Gratifying to know there's a story waiting for me once I get around to visiting.

Thanks.

Regarding nominations, we've got dozens of undone stories in The Weird alone, so we're definitely not hitting the bottom of the barrel quite yet. It'd be nice, though, with more nominators - I hope any lurkers (at thresholds, presumably) feel free to step forward and nominate something. There's no associated obligations after all.

Not only is there no further obligation--even to participate in the resulting discussion!--but in all these years, we've never been known to dog anyone for nominating a story where readers end up taking a dim view of it. It's perfectly okay to gamble on stories the nominator has never read, although also welcome for nominators to put up stories they've enjoyed and would like to revisit.

I can add some language to the planning thread next quarter to review some of these points, making them explicit for the benefit of those who haven't proposed stories before.

You said it! Add to it mostly at-home school for my daughter, and I don't have a lot of non-exhausted free time. I do the best I can with keeping up here.

And thanks for tabulating, as always, paradoxosalpha!

Yes, thanks to paradoxosalpha and KentonSem for the work.

I've also been finding it harder to get to LibraryThing daily. Nothing to do with COVID in my case but a job search.

Good luck on that!

It appears there is now the ability to pin a thread (discussion) to a Group. We've done pretty well without it, but it occurs to me this could be useful for the current DEEP ONES discussion thread.

Announcement here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/328876

I like that! I could put "Welcome to the Weird" at the top and maybe the current week's discussion just below. I'm actually not seeing how to do this, but I asked in the announcement you posted.

Got it. Thanks for pointing this out!
