Newbie request: Sandglass needed for Dostoevsky's Idiot

Hello, all. I'm very new (one month new!) to HP. I just bought Dostoevsky's Idiot, but it came without a Sandglass. If there is one uploaded somewhere, could someone point the way?

I have seen posts refer to a google drive. Do I need to know the secret handshake in order to get access?

>2 abysswalker: Yes, it worked for me about a year ago. Just to set your expectations it might take a week or so.
Once granted access, you definitely want to use Uploads for any Sandglass or MonthlyLetters you have and notice aren’t in the folder, yet.
The other folders are read-only to prevent erasure, which apparently happened in the past.

Great resource and I applaud those that maintain it.

>4 maisiedotes: I just checked and while the Limited Editions Club Monthly Letter for The Idiot is here in the drive already, I didn't see the Sandglass. Usually the Sandglass is similar to the ML in history of the book, author, artist, but differs in the book construction details. I'll keep my eyes out for a copy since I don't own this book yet, but it is on my wish list.

I have the Sandglass for The Idiot, but the one that I have is from the Connecticut issue of the book I received when I was a Heritage Club member. Later I found a NY Heritage copy of the book and gave away the Connecticut copy, which wasn't up the the NY standard, but kept the Sandglass. A few years ago I bought Michael Bussacco's Sandglass Companion and saw how the CT Sandglass differed slightly from the original. I'll scan the Sandglass on my day off tomorrow and also copy the differing parts of the original.

I can't find Michael Bussacco's Sandglass Companion for sale anywhere. Should I keep digging?

It seems the Sandglass was written by George Macy, recycled from information in the ML he wrote for the Limited Editions Club. As for the Companion,

It says "Limited Availability" so I don't know if that means it can still be purchased; you might give it a try.

One more question regarding my HP Dostoevsky Idiot (it wasn't expensive). The slipcase arrived in two separate pieces. Can I throw away a broken slipcase with impunity?

I would probably keep it and try to restore it. Even taped together it is good protection. There are wizards among this group who could provide advice on what to do to restore it.

>11 Django6924: I've repaired a number of slipcases but replaced even more. If it's a plain slipcase I prefer to replace it unless it's a minor repair (e.g. regluing one or two seams). I agree that even a taped repair provides protection but it looks horrible and eventually the tape will age and come apart.

Agreed. Taped repairs are a stopgap, but I still keep damaged slipcases as they provide a good template for replacement.

I think the important thing to remember is that a slipcase may, or may not be, a thing of beauty in its own right, but it keeps dust out of the page top, helps the book maintain its shape, and reduces scuffing.

Probably not, or if it does, not much.

I uploaded the Sandglass for the Connecticut version of The Idiot to the Limited Editions Club ML Upload file, and perhaps someone here with edit privileges can move it to the Sandglass folder.

Very amusing difference between the NY 1st issue Sandglass and the one from the Connecticut issue. The opening paragraph of the NY edition talks about how to imagine yourself to be a prince, and says you might imagine yourself to be Prince Rainier "and have your ear nibbled by a delectable young wife,"--this of course the year of Rainier's wedding to Grace Kelly. The Norwalk Sandglass changes the imagined prince to Prince Charles (but does not mention a wife). Rainier returns in the last paragraph of the NY Sandglass, but Prince Charles, and details about the binding, are omitted in the CT version.

I have another request for you kind LTers! My recently-acquired copy of A Romance of Tristan and Iseult has no Sandglass. If anyone has it, would you please share? (The copy on George Macy Imagery is blurry and Wildcat no longer has the book.)

The Tristan & Iseult Sandglass is in the Limited Editions Club ML Upload file, and perhaps someone here with edit privileges can move it to the Sandglass folder.

Dear kind devotees, I am now reading my 1935 HP Scarlet Letter. I looked in the LEC Monthly Upload and LEC Monthly Letters but don't see a Sandglass. Is this possible?? Are my eyes missing something?

If someone has a Sandglass to scan, that would be much appreciated. You've all been so helpful and welcoming!

Some of the Sandglasses that I've looked at on the google drive are scanned as four pages. Could some kind, tech-y devotee explain how to rotate and print all four on one 8.5 x 11 sheet?

Also, I have some Sandglasses that I don't think are in the drive, and I'd be happy to add them. I just need to figure out how. Helpful hints would be welcome!
