I am posting a couple of before and after photos for Montaigne's Essays and Anatole France's "Penguin Island". The clean up using a draftsman's Dry Cleaning Pad worked amazingly well. I went very slowly, in one direction only and protected the gilt by covering it with paper held firmly by hand. I used a soft paint brush to periodically clean the surface of the dry erase debris. This worked very well on my copy of Apelius' "The Golden Ass". I don't think I have seen any images of the Essays that look this good!

>6 Glacierman:

Back when I was in high school (over 50 years ago), and was learning drafting, we used to used these pads to clean our drawings, which tended to get grubby with perspiration, hand dirt, graphite dust and eraser rubbings. When the instructor wasn't in the room they also made excellent missiles, leaving a most satisfying dust mark on the target (it was then that I stopped wearing dark shirts to school). Little did I imagine that they could also be used to restore book bindings! I'm ordering one today!
