I am Paul from Switzerland, widower and father of three (30, 32, 34 years old) and grandfather of one (10 months).

I work part time as a librarian and part time in a Caritas shop, selling food and stuff to refugees and low-income-people. And I work in different functions in a free church.

Hobbies are reading, photography and hiking. I also do some proofreading for wikisource, and occasionally load up a picture to wikipedia (especially photos of free book places I find, which are also to find here in LT local). I also fill up the graveyars on findagrave.com with pictures of graves of Swiss and German cemeteries.

My wife Suki was a Korean from Kwangju, Cheollanamdo. She was working as a nurse in Switzerland. So I do know a little bit Korean and love Korean food. She died three years ago of cancer.

They were a little bit wider but as steep and I also remember my legs cramping after going up and down! I did this when my daughter was 8 and we were on a 3-day/night field trip. It’s not something I’d ever attempt again, 19 years later.

The stairs climbing would have been okay, if I hadn't tried to follow my colleague in front of me - I should have taken my own pace from the beginning

63) Tod am Cours Mirabeau : ein Provence-Krimi by Mary L. Longworth. Close to Marine Bonnet's apartment in Aix-en-Provence, a new restaurant opened, there is a fountain in the garden in the back of it which has a curse on it: as soon as there happens a murder or so, the water stops flowing - and really when a body buried is found near the fountain, the water stops running ... judge Verlaque is investigating. A fair mystery with some local flair.

64) Eine feine Gesellschaft : Roman by Amanda Cross. During student unrest on the campus, a professor takes the wrong medicine and dies ... Kate Fansler is present and starts to ask around ... a bit too many characters, and a lot W. H Auden quotes. A mystery in a university setting

65) Der Narr : Lebensweisheit in Parabeln by Kahlil Gibran. Short parables about life.

66) Herz der Finsternis : Erzählung by Joseph Conrad. A journey on the river Kongo during colonial times. A dark atmosphere, uneasy description of colonialism, slavery, hunt for ivory.

67) Der Argentinier : Novelle by Klaus Merz. An old man tells his grand daughter about his emigration to Argentina and his return to Switzerland and his love. He wanted to be a gaucho but had an allergic reaction to the Argentinian hay, so he learned tango. When returned home he never danced except at the wedding of his daughter ... a search for his own self

68) Die lateinischen Grabinschriften in den Kreuzgängen des Basler Münsters by Andreas Pronay. The Latin epitaphs in the cloister of the Basler Münster are all translated now, this book contains 199 epitaphs. A photography of the epitaph, the Latin text, a German translation and some additional information. A useful source book.



I used it for enriching my pictures of the epitaphs on findagrave. Since I don't know Latin, this book was very helpful in translating/transliterating the Latin texts. There are now 438 entries for the Cathedral of Basel there https://de.findagrave.com/cemetery/1964327/cathedral-of-basel

This is one of the epitaphs: Jacob Bernoulli, the mathematician. There is a spiral on the epitaph - but the wrong one, Bernoulli wanted a logarithmic spiral, not an Archimedean spiral, which the stonemason made :)

69) Girl with a pearl earring by Tracy Chevalier. In the 17th century delft Griet becomes the maid in the house of the painter Jan Vermeer. She has to support her family, so has to work hard in this household. She also loves colours and learns a lot about painting there ... a great story about a young woman

70) Das Tal der Abenteuer by Enid Blyton. Philip, Dinah, Jack and Lucy board the wrong plane and so land in another country in a valley where all the houses were destroyed and a treasure should be hidden in a cave ... great children story



What struck me now, is the fact, that there is talk about a war in that country, but the children reacted as they would know nothing about a war or that that happened a long time ago. The book was first published 1947

71) Boarding Time : Kriminalroman by Peter Hänni. Five friends fly from Switzerland to South Africa, there they hire Harley Davidson motorcycles and tour the country. But then one of them gets attacked nad dies in the hospital. But who is behind the murder? Why was he attacked? ... a Swiss mystery about friendship, loyalty and greed

72) Ein Liebeslied zwischen Himmel und Erde : das Hohelied by Dave Brander. A short introductory and commentary to the Song of Songs. First comes a short history about the development of the interpretation of the Song of Songs, and the a commentary chapter by chapter, always linking the chapter to the present. He regards the Song as a love poem (Salomo and his love) but also an allegory (Christ and his bride). Interesting read

73) Wien kann sehr kalt sein : Kriminalroman by Georg Koytek. During a rehearsal of Hamlet in the Burgtheater in Vienna, king Claudius fell off the stage and was impaled by metal lances underneath. An accident? Free lace policeman Conrad is smuggled in undercover as a Komparse (extra) .... a strange world at the famous Viennese theater, sometimes I was a bit confused by the building and the historical tidbits inserted in the mystery

74) Jorinde und Joringel : ein Singspiel für Kinder by Marianne Garff. A play for children. The witch takes Jorinde away and changes her into a bird. Joringel, the shepard boy, goes out to find the magic flower which will break the spell ... text and songs from the 1950s

75) Der Fels des Schreckens by Heiner Gross. A 16-year-old disappears and an anonymous caller reports a corpse beneath the Rock of Witches, but the police arrives, no-one is found. But where is the girl? Kommissar Morger is investigating, his twins helping him ... a good mystery for teenagers

78) Der sechste Sinn des Mr. Reeder : Kriminalroman by Edgar Wallace. Mr Reeder listens to all the rumours he hears and always thinks the worst of anybody he meets and so solves all the strange mysteries the police is overwhelmed with .... a good read

79) Einst als ... : 3 Tiergeschichten by Paul Eggenberg. Three different short stories about animals: How the frog got his voice (he asked God to have the roar of a lion as his voice, his wish was granted, but when roaring loud, sitting on the lily pad, he fell into the pond and swallowed a lot water which made his voice quacking...), how a giraffe wandered from the zoo into the city (the birds stole the key from the keeper and let her out), and how the hedgehog got his spines ... interesting reading by this Swiss author

80) Der Wedelemacher : eine Erzählung aus dem Emmental by Gottfried Fankhauser. When his mother died Peter was given to the farmer on the Kohlmatt in the Emmental. He fell in love with the daughter of the house, but her mother was very class conscious and sent the Güterbub/Verdingbub away and married her daughter to another farmer who was better off ... but that one proved to be a pain in the neck ... a well written story of this Bernese author, first published 1945, printed in Fraktur, with all the direct speeches given in Bernese German



A Güterbub or Verdingbub (contracting boy) was a boy who was placed into a new 'home' by the authorities when the parents died or were unfit to raise their children. The authorities payed some money to the people who took on these poor children but only very few did really care for them. The community of the place of origin of the father was responsible for taking these actions. So Peter had to go 'home' to his place of origin and live there and not in the place he was born and grew up.

Fun fact: When entering the USA (or any other country) they usually ask for a 'place of birth' and I always enter Biberist SO, then they complain because they see Lüthelflüh BE as 'place of origin' in my passport ....

Füfzgi: Albert celebrates his 50th birthday and is afraid of being pushed aside because of his old age ... but his wife wants to show him that the bloom there must be sweet fruits, during summer the fruits are sour and useless but with age the sweetness and good taste of the fruit show.
D'Amnestie: Gustav was putting money from his business aside without paying taxes. The government now offers an amnesty for all those who specify their hidden money. His wife counts the money and put some aside for herself, secretly ...

83) Zeichen Seiner Siege by Alexander Morel. A short history of the Blue Cross in the Bernese Jura. Morel was a pastor of the Reformed church who saw the need and suffering of alcoholics. He joined the Blue Cross and helped those in bitter needs - basically by preaching the gospel of freedom in Christ. ... a personal account of this pious man.

84) The four just men by Edgar Wallace. Four men warn a politician to push an unjust law in parliament, if he does not drop that law he will be killed ... an interesting story

Hans and Klaus are know as 'The Burdocks' (nuisances) in the village because they make so many pranks, one night they want to scare someone so they hid in the cemetery covered with bed cloths, but they were careless and fell into a newly dug grave ... a good story but not so skillfully told

87) The mystery of the disappearing cat by Enid Blyton. A Siamese cat disapprears and the garden boy is suspected of having stolen it. But the Find-Outers and Dog are his friends and don't believe the accusations, so they hunt for clues in order to find the thief ... fun read

88) Our man in Havana : an entertainment by Graham Greene. Mr Wormold is selling vacuum cleaners in Cuba. One day he is approached by an Englishman who asks him to work for the secret service. Wormold needs the money and so agrees and starts inventing sub-agents ... a nice and entertaining read

89) Tod im Herbst : Ein Fall für Guarnaccia ; Roman by Magdalen Nabb. Some tourists report a corpse in the river Arno in Firenze. It takes some time till they find out that a German lady is missing from one of the local hotels. She is the owner of a villa in a near-by town which is rented by some young people who seem to consume drugs ... but why was she murdered and thrown into the Arno and by whom? A well written mystery

90) Acht Frauen : Amtsträgerinnen der frühen Kirche ; Kirche St. Stephan, Therwil by Jutta Achhammer Moosbrugger. An artist painted a picture of eight women sitting around a table, apparently discussing things. On the empore there are eight names of women of the ancient church written: Mary of Magdala, Martha, Phoebe, Junia, Lydia, Priska, Thekla and the Nameless. The booklet contains a small biography of each woman and an outline about the idea and the working-out of this art work and the theological idea behind it (giving women their place back in Roman-Catholic church, making them visible again).

91) Der Club der grünen Witwen : Roman by Marte Cormann. 4 women in their midlife-crises-years meet regularly and feel that life seems to be over and done. So, they start a project: writing a mystery book, each providing a murder story; each woman provides a victim (the one person she dislikes so much that she would kill him/her) and then they draw lots who has to 'kill' whom and how. First they had to spy on the victims and then tell their story about the murder case. Funny idea, I really liked that setting and the ideas how the victims were 'killed' but the telling of the story was shallow

He accompanies a young woman to her new working place and wants to meet a possible woman for him to marry in the same village. But they have to go through the Devil's Pool, an area which has strange influences on all travelers ... a good, but simple French story

I took this picture 2 years ago when we were on our pre-Christmas vacation.
Last year there was no snow, this year we were not allowed to go. Therefore, we revel in fond memories and look forward to next year.

That goes well until the foster mother dies and Ruth has to take over responsibility for the children. She has to collect ears of wheat after the reapers have gone through the fields and things like that in order to feed the kids ... an old Swiss novella showing the consequences of drinking and the good stewardship of a young girl (with happy end)

94) The man in the brown suit by Agatha Christie. A young woman travels from London to South Africa on the search for adventures, following strange clues ... fun reading, a thriller with murder, fraud, espionage, love and friendship and lies

95) Unterm Messer : ein Mira-Valensky-Krimi by Eva Rossmann. Journalist Mira Valensky wants to write an article about a famous plastic surgeon. In the sauna of the beauty clinic she then finds a dead nun (cooked low) ... a mystery about gene tech and vanity in the sphere of beauty, health and sports

96) Frühling der Barbaren : Novelle by Jonas Lüscher. A Swiss businessman visits partners in Tunisia and learns about the bankruptcy of the UK ... a story about behavior of rich young bankers from the City ... a re-read, but disappointed this time

97) Tauziehen im Dschungel und andere Tiergeschichten by Paul White. Daudi tells stories about Toto, the little ape in the jungle. Toto plays with a rope when the jackal and the crocodile come around and they challenge him to a tug of war. The little ape wins and he so proud and sure of himself that he doesn't think further when they ask him for another challenge the next time ... Daudi explains his listeners parts of the Gospel and Christian ethics with these parables from jungle experience. Nice stories
