Just noticed that our newest member (Floraine) is based in Davao, and so is one of the lurkers (Nicknich) - I'm originally from Davao myself, now based in Quezon City.

So i guess my next few questions are:

Where are you from? Where are you now?

If you're not in Manila, where do you buy your books? (This will reveal me as a Davao old-timer, but I had no National Bookstore to fall back on growing up - we had Alemars and Velasco Bookstore, which both wilted away when National finally set up in Davao when I was in college.)

I grew up in Cavite, Philippines, and I spent a lot of time buying books at National Bookstore - SM Bacoor Branch, and when I visit my relatives in Muntinlupa, I buy stuff at Powerbooks. Wala pang Fully Book when we migrated, I think.

I now live in MB, Canada and I buy my books at secondhand bookstores like Aqua Books, Bison Books and The Bookman, and sometimes at Chapters or sa McNally Robinsons.

There are only three National Bookstore outlets in Cebu, where I live, so no trip to Metro Manila is complete without a visit to A Different Bookstore.

I also buy books online, but not too often, otherwise I'd end up with books for a nest egg (hmmm, not a bad idea). Oh, and we also have a few RSO outlets that sell previously owned books: I once paid US$10 for John Gardner's Grendel, only to learn from a friend that several copies were going for PhP10 each at the RSO bargain bins in Ayala.

Alas, micketymoc, I purchase most of my books from Amazon and pay the postage - so my purchase rate has gone down tremendously (may also have something to do with my income plummeting since moving to Davao also). I usually get by PowerBooks when I'm in Manila - but most books I really want are only on Amazon. I also like, and have purchased from, A Different Bookstore in Manila - an eclectic but not huge collection.

Lurker no more. Still looking for good sources in Davao!

- Nick.

I've been a long-time lurker here.

I moved to the US in 2003 to study, but I was born and raised in Manila. My mum was an English literature major, so we had a good collection of classics and contemporary literature in the house. I started collecting the Sandman comics and other Vertigo titles in second year HS.

When I moved here, I brought my comics with me. These days, I buy bargain books from Barnes and Noble or Borders, or the booksales in the public library.

My most valuable book is a first Allen and Unwin edition of The SIlmarillon.

I'm from Malolos, Bulacan but i'm in Quezon City right now. As far as i can remember, I never bought any book from Bulacan but I used to buy/look around in National Bookstores, Booksales & Powerbooks Megamall. Minsan sobrang namamahalan ako so I only choose some bestsellers. Ever since I discovered this bookstore at UP Diliman 2 or 3 months ago, where they sell second hand books, dun na ko palagi bumibili

Dito sa Bacolod, we have the following:

2 Booksale branches (one sa SM and another sa Rob)
2 National bookstore branches (one sa SM and a bigger branch sa Gaisano... and another daw will open sa Robinson)

great thing about bacolod city is that only a few people buy books to read for pleasure (unlike manila folks who would swarm bookfairs and would rejoice if there's a booksale). folks here (those who can afford to buy books) do nothing but gossip, socialize and watch the sugarcane grow... so more choices for me.

My childhood reading years were spent in Baguio and the States. My mom was a librarian so I had access to a lot of books. It wasn't until 4th year high school in Quezon City that I read a literary story by a Filipino writer--"Magnificence" by Estrella Alfon. It was so powerful and moving that I looked for more Filipino literature and found Ben Santos and NVM Gonzalez at the main lib in UP Diliman. I read Nick Joaquin's Tropical Gothic last year --some of it was repetition, some of it new to me. Thanks to the starter of this group for making a cyberhome for reading Pinoys.

Forgot to mention that I currently live in Singapore. The public libraries are pretty good and there is always Borders, Kinokuniya, MPH and Times when I have some extra money to buy books. They're expensive here, though, so when possible, I order from Amazon and have them carried back here by traveling friends.

I spent my childhood and adolescence in Laguna, Philippines, but I'm now based in Southern California. =

I don't really buy books as much as I used to. I just go to the library and request the titles I want. =P Of course, it can be difficult to find Filipino or Filipino-American literature in the library system here, so I stock up on books when I go back to the Philippines.

Ay! I've moved to Malaybalay City. If I thought books were hard to come by in Davao ... well pfffttt ... I can't buy anything in Malaybalay. But it's a wonderful place to read!

Well, nick, that's what amazon.com is for!

How good is your internet connection in malaybalay?

Hello. I'm based in Manila and got into reading, well, since I learned how to read. :) I read anything and dont discriminate against genres. I love books so much I rejected the more financially lucrative courses and majored in comparative literature instead, much to my parents' dismay. hehe. i now work for a newspaper.

I get my books from the usual places - national bookstore, powerbooks, fully booked, booksale, etc. aside from books, my other obsession is music. i listen to pop bands like camera obscura and belle and sebastian, bands which are often described as music for the bookish types. (hey, b&s even has a song called "wrapped up in books" :)

I'm suddenly reminded of "The Book I Read" by Talking Heads. Man, I love that band!

Also, you might find this interesting to read, especially item number 5: "2004's Best Five Rock-Based Novels You Can Actually Tap Your Foot To."

^^ It's a popmatters link! Do you like that site? It's got a nice book section but i like the music reviews better. At the risk of sounding as if i'm tooting my horn, I must admit that I use to write for them. But I got fired. Heh. Well, not exactly. There's still an offer to write for them, but I couldnt find the time. So there you go. I must pay my respects to the popmatters gods again.

#13: I love Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura! In case you're interested, National Public Radio had these series of live concerts earlier this year, and made them available as podcasts. Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura are among the bands featured. Check it out at the iTunes US music store: NPR All Songs Considered. Also, B&S crossed over to comicbooks with Put That Book Back on the Shelf:

P.S. Image comics is also coming out with an anthology based on Tori Amos. Sweet.
