Hi everyone,
my apologies as I am quite new to LT but I am now trying to get my little collection organised with the help of Library Thing and as there is no dedicated "book location" field in the database it has been suggested to use the 'comment' field for that. That's fine with me but if I add 30 books which are in a dedicated shelf space and would love to add the location I need to do that singly - there is no mass editing for the comment field, right?
I'll try and find out next where the group for "suggestions for future ideas" is but then I am somehow quite sure this question may have cropped up before - I tried to find anything in the groups but there was no post that answered my question.
Hope you're all staying safe,
Best wishes,
Marcel

Hi, Marcel -
The group for "suggestions for future ideas" is the Recommend Site Improvements group: http://www.librarything.com/groups/recommendsiteimprov
You are right that there's no mass editing for the comment field. An alternative would be to use tags; you can use the power edit function to add tags to (or remove tags from) multiple books at one time.

Book location can be entered in the 'Other Call Number' field. The entry there does not need to be in any set patterm.

Not that I know of, but the OP didn't know that this basically is the book location field. If he is going to edit each entry he might as well use the field intended for the purpose.

Thank you so much, everyone, for getting back to me - it's very much appreciated!
Obviously, the power edit function on the tags field sounds like a great idea instead of having to add things singly.
However, let's put the question the other way around:
Would anybody of you happen to know how TinyCat determines the holding/ location of a book? What is the field TinyCat would use for this?
I am talking a physical space, not necessarily the DDC number, as in "The bookshelf beside the door" *g*
I don't have a working library in a medium-sized home I could have proper signage in, just an apartment with seven+ bookshelves I'd like to organise.

It can be LC Classification, Dewey, or Other Call number, depending on your settings.

If you just want to specify the bookshelf the book is on, I'd use tags

Personally, I create Collections for book locations, in preference to tags. Tags are visible to everyone, and I feel this is personal information, not public. YMMV!

>10 sarahemmm:
Collections are visible also.
I know, for example, that your copy of Loving and Giving is in your "Location: Study" collection, as well as three others.

>11 lilithcat: I know, but they are only visible when you are looking at my library; they are not aggregated in the way tags are, to give a deep and wide view of the work. I'm very happy for you to know where I shelve my books, if you are interested ;)
