I think there's a geographical factor at work here, as I have never heard of most of those. In the UK we got some north American imports, such as Tom & Jerry, Popeye, Top Cat, and I seem to recall Huckleberry Hound. I don't recall so many homegrown cartoons on TV, although Ivor the Engine and Noggin the Nog stand out in my memory. Children's programmes when I was very young were mostly puppet type shows, eg Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men, Torchy, the Woodentops, Sooty, Andy Pandy, Muffin the Mule, Rag Tag and Bobtail, the Clangers, Twizzle, Noddy, etc.

If we go into the cartoon characters in the children's comic books such as Dandy and Beano, the list gets longer.

Mr. Peabody, often on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show.

I would say that the "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is still one of the best cartoon films ever made.

My all time favorite cartoon is The Roadrunner.

Dudley Do-Right and Nell, Snidely Whiplash. Horse’s name, anyone?

Just googled it. "Horse" is correct. Nell loved Horse far more than she loved Dudley.

Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb.

OK, stop-motion animation rather than cartoons.

Jonny Quest! Son of Dr. Quest, famous scientist, with his sidekick Race Bannon, and his best friend Hadji - and Bandit, the pug.

Great names. Funny how I never noticed the complete absence of female characters in that show. It was such fun!

>23 terriks: Oh! I loved that show! And it was multi-racial, yah?

25terriks
Jan 30, 2021, 4:10 pm

>24 2wonderY: Exactly! Hadji knew things that Jonny didn't and vice-versa, gently implied through their cultural diversity. Obviously, as kids we couldn't articulate that, but it added to the show.

Remember the Mummy, and the one-eyed giant spider thing? Eek! 😆

Here’s a stop-action version of the opening, done in 2011. Exciting!

What was the show that was produced in stop-action and featured young men and fancy rocket planes in a hidden (under water?) headquarters ?

>26 2wonderY:. I might be thinking of Thunderbirds; produced with “Supermarionation.” One of the vehicles launched from beneath the in-ground swimming pool. The entire pool installation slid back for launches. Loved that detail.

Can anybody remember the other series produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in Supermarionation? Stingray, Supercar, Fireball XL5, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons... others?

>32 John5918: Fireball XL5 was fantastic. They even had a record in the top ten !! It was, in fact, a very good recording and went well live on stage.

I wish I was a space man, the fastest guy alive
I'd fly you round the universe in Fireball XL5.

Boris and Natasha. I bet you can mimic them today.

One I just remembered: Snagglepuss...a pink cat, I think! He was always saying, "Heavens to Murgatroyd."

36WholeHouseLibrary

Most of those Fireball XL5 marionettes were used again to make the 2004 smash hit, Team America, World Police.
The didn't use plucky little Jonathan Zero; nor his pet monkey, Mitch.

My late wife had gotten (among a myriad of other animals), a female cockatiel. Its screech sounded exactly like JZ calling out to locate his pet every time they got lost and separated in an underground labyrinth - which occurred in perhaps 20% of the episodes. I hated that bird.

And because this has wandered far from topic -- cartoon characters -- I have to say that for me, it's a toss-up between Vera Aldid and Fearless Fodstick, both from the Dick Tracy comics in the Sunday newspaper.
