My first big book of 2020 just squeaks by at 508 pages. Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang, is a powerful story I will never forget. It is the story of the author, her mother and grandmother, living through the twentieth century from the days of the warlords, the occupation of Japan and Russia, Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang, and the insanity of Mao’s Communist reign. Highly recommended.

I plan on reading this year so far:
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, 940 pages;
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, 1474 pages;
A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara Tuchman,
597 pages.
These are some of the big books I have read over the years, in no order:
Bleak House by Charles Dickens, 880 pages;
From Here to Eternity by James Jones, 861 pages (This has to be the weirdest book I’ve ever read and I can hardly believe I read the whole thing.);
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, 973 pages;
At Dawn We Slept by Gordon W. Prang, 873 pages;
By James Michener: Centennial, 909 pages; Hawaii, 1095 pages; Poland, 620 pages; The Source, 909 pages;
By Edward Rutherfurd: Sarum, 897 pages; The Forest 598 pages; London 829 pages;
Roots by Alex Haley, 688 pages;
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, 843 pages;
Ben-Hur by Lew Wallace, 547 pages;
Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz, 564 pages;

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, 676 pages.

Welcome to the Big Fat Book group marell !
You are off to a great start, Wild Swans is a powerful read and Don Quixote is in the running for the greatest novel ever IMO. Cheers

Thank you both for your welcome to the group. I took a big gulp before joining! Reading a big book is sometimes a challenge as well as a commitment. Joining up is a good incentive to pick up the books I somehow put off reading because of their size. My husband has been trying to get me to read Don Quixote for years. So 2020 is it!
