I've been scouring my brain for information on a book I read when I was in highschool. Sadly all my efforts have been in vain. So I come to you good people in search of hope.
It's a fiction book and has space travel and time travel
The main character is a Soldier who ends up finding something ( not sure exactly what but I think it's either some AI or something like a consciousness) that helps him to evolve himself and his technology. All of this is in hopes to get to his past so that he can save his highschool sweetheart and while he's back in time he is literally the new guy in school and plays football I think with his past self on the same team but due to the technology he has he is able to alter his appearance and so his girlfriend and his past self don't know it's him.
The last bit I remember is that the "consciousness" isn't the only one of its kind and was damaged and smaller than its counterparts but was repaired /healed by the others but kept by soldier boy.

I also remember that he had some wrist guard/ computer on and I'm pretty sure it was important in the story line.

When were you in high school? And was the book new, then?
(The book doesn't sound familiar to me, but every bit of info may help.)
