Quick question - how long do you have to be a member before everyone turns a blind eye to your for sale posts?

Mai 8, 2022, 9:54 pm

>12 What_What: I've heard people say sales are forbidden on LT but I don't see that in the TOS. I'm genuinely curious about this.

This is all I could find- LibraryThing is not an advertising medium. Egregious commercial solicitation is forbidden.

Members posting a few books for sale or trade from time to time doesn't seem like egregious commercial solicitation.

A tangential question related to the topic - are the Grimm’s Fairy Tales and The Arabian Nights volumes worth getting? Both of these exist in so many forms from so many publishers, but I wouldn't mind having the FS editions if they are noteworthy ones.

>12 What_What:
The FSD policy is stated on the FSD wiki and reads:-

"The Library Thing terms of use prohibit the selling of merchandise on the LT site. However, long term users of FSD are tolerated when they sometimes (not regularly) direct others to their profile where they may list books they may wish to "swap" (sometimes for money). Negotiations must be via private personal messages and certainly not openly in the forum. This toleration depends on the goodwill of the FSD community, and is not tolerated if you are new member who has contributed little or nothing to the forum, or if it is suspected that you are a commercial bookseller."

Our friend Astropi has been a long term contributor to FSD and the Fine Press forum, but he been starting to push the boundaries of the policy recently.

>14 Shadekeep: Both titles appear to be facsimile reproductions of the original editions reviewed on the FPF here:
- The Arabian Nights illustrated by E.J. Detmold: https://www.librarything.com/topic/318224
- Grimm's Fairy Tales illustrated by Arthur Rackham: https://www.librarything.com/topic/319151

YouTube review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFHBmjfgM3A

As far as noteworthiness, you must decide if the stated goal of The Folio Society in the words of Charles Ede 'to produce editions of the world's great literature, in a format worthy of the contents, at a price within the reach of everyman' has been fulfilled.

Both titles available directly from FS but can be had for under £15 on the secondary market.

At the risk of getting scolded for providing an unsolicited opinion, I think wcarter and any other administrators of the FSD group are always going to be fighting an uphill battle when it comes to setting community guidelines RE: trading of books.
I can sympathize that some considerable effort and thought has been put into setting some fair policy for governing the FSD community, but for the general conscientious forum-goer, the LT TOS will be the go-to policy to be adhered to, and should always continue to take precedence over other community-set guidelines. I don’t mean to construct a straw-man argument RE: rules precedence; to my knowledge nobody is claiming that the FSD guidelines are to supersede the LT TOS.

The uphill battle starts when the wording of the LT TOS is (arguably purposely) vague, and probably well-intentioned, to provide some reasonable leeway to groups where non-fragrant trading is likely to occur.

As I see it, astropi can contend that they are neither violating the LT TOS or the FSD community guidelines. By stating that astropi is “pushing the boundaries” of the FSD guidelines, wcarter may be putting themselves in the untenable position of having to strictly define what those boundaries are, thereby exposing themselves to the trouble of having to quantitively define limits of trading activity— at which point the community guidelines will have arguably exceeded the scope of the LT TOS, and call into question the rightful enforceability of any such community-created guidelines.

As I see it, tutting at and discouraging trading is fine, but obviously the efficacy of such is questionable. Prohibiting trading all together full-stop, with reference to the TOS wording “egregious commercial solicitation is prohibited” will likely cause split hairs, and in the worst case can lead to LT community managers stepping in if a claim is made. It is likely that until a LT community manager takes a stance on the matter, it will continue to be a subject of divided opinion.

I realize that’s a lot of words without a suggestion of resolution; what I would like to get across is this: when setting community guidelines which are intended to provide clarity to the TOS, you will necessarily have to defend, revisit and from time-to-time amend those guidelines to ensure harmonization with the TOS according to the interpretation of current members of the community. This is of course already well-understood by wcarter et al, and I don’t suppose that I am providing any new insight in to the matter, but if were me (which it thankfully is not!) that had to strive to set and uphold such guidelines, I imagine I would quickly get tired of having to enforce and advise such guidelines each time a community member decides that it is appropriate for them to let others know they have some surplus books for trade. I’m inclined to the pessimistic thought that it’s all quite a fruitless and unrewarding endeavor.

>15 wcarter: I agree with your last paragraph. The rules provide a valuable opportunity for like-minded members, especially in the fine press forum where some books may be hard to come across, to occasionally post books for trade, and it’s something I fully support.

The Grimm's Fairytales with the Rackham illustrations are a really good way to get the complete illustrations at a fair price, if that's what one is interested in. Being German I wouldn't have bought an English version of the tales otherwise, but these illustrations are just beautiful and the number very generous.

Arabian Nights has more than one edition. I bought the two-volume set with three books each in a slipcase, there's a variety of illustrators. I felt that this edition gives a completely different insight into the tales from the usual selections aimed at kids, like the one-volume edition FS also published.

21Shadekeep
Mai 9, 2022, 9:27 am

>20 SF-72: I do like Rackham's art very much, so that is the primary draw for this edition, as I have several other versions of the Grimm tales. I didn't know about the multi-volume Arabian Nights, that does sound like a desirable edition. It seems to be a little difficult to come by at the moment, at least as a complete set, but thank you for the recommendation!

Mai 9, 2022, 10:53 am

>21 Shadekeep:

I'd say if you're interested in the Rackham illustrations, the FS edition is a very good deal. Easton Press also published this, but at a much higher price.

If you're searching with the terms 'Arabian Nights Folio', there are several sets on Ebay, including one by the British Red Cross where they split it up into two listings at currently no bids and a starting price of 60 Pounds each. The cheapest complete set with a buy it now option costs 150 Pounds, which seems reasonable. It costs quite a bit more on Abebooks, for example. The shipping fee is usually quite steep for these heavy sets, and I don't know where you are, but at least within Europe that's also reasonable in both cases, probably due to the use of Ebay's global shipping system. I guess they can offer good rates for these heavy sets, for smaller items they're often a lot more expensive than direct shipping to the buyer. Here are the links, I'm not affiliated with the sellers.

I acquired the Calla Editions version of Grimm a decade ago from Amazon for $26. To my untrained eye, it looks pretty nice, although (as with the other Calla Editions titles I've bought) the paper seems unusually thick and stiff like card stock. It's got a sewn binding and was printed in the US. Among the statements in the colophon are "Printed on 100# Utopia II Ivory dull" and "Bound in Pearl linen".

>24 cpg:

I can't speak for this one, but from what I've seen and read here on the forum, the quality of Calla editions has decreased a lot in recent years. I actually returned one I'd bought from an online shop because of the poor quality of the illustrations (rather blurred and poor colour representation). That's a real shame because they have some classics at a very affordable price.

>26 SF-72: I had three at one point (Hamlet, The Tempest, and Poe). Ended up selling all of them. The construction basics were fine (acid-free paper, stitched binding), but they just didn't feel satisfying in the hand.

I pretty much stopped paying attention to them the first time I received a book with a glued binding.

"I actually returned one I'd bought from an online shop because of the poor quality of the illustrations (rather blurred and poor colour representation)."

Here's an illustration from my Calla Grimm's:

Here's the same page from the FS edition that dlphcoracl posted:

But, of course, this comparison doesn't control for different ways the two images have been captured.

I think the colours are a bit better in the DS edition, but yes, I'd be happy enough with the one you sent a photo of. But I wouldn't be sure that a more recent reprint would have the same quality. There seems to have been a point when the quality really changed, and the different printing location seems to play a role there. But since I've only seen a few books and won't risk buying more, I can't really give that many details or examples.

I've traded books on librarything for years. Many people have. I suppose periodically one has to remind others that this is no way against LT rules. With that in mind, I'm still looking for

The tower, by W. B Yeats.

Lays of ancient Rome
De profundis, by Oscar Wilde

And lol, I like the don’t care attitude, even in the face of mild criticism from the admins. But I guess as others have said, the rule basically depends on goodwill, and you’ve set up your shop here for quite a while, so maybe there’s nothing to be done.

My understanding is that rules against selling were done to ensure that LT does not turn into abe or something similar. Not to mention there are various tax issues one has to deal with. All that said, to my knowledge there has never been any issue with someone trading or even gifting books - both of which happen often. The offical rule is
LibraryThing is not an advertising medium. Egregious commercial solicitation is forbidden.
