I've been logging plenty of frequent flier miles so far this month. I started out in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, investigating The Shape of the Ruins, hopped a quick flight to Santiago, the Chilean capital, exploring The Remainder of a life lived in exile, experienced Black Deutschland in Berlin, and now find myself surrounded by Celestial Bodies in Muscat, the capital of Oman.

I flew from America to Sri Lanka to discover the secrets of The Mask Collectors.

I'm visiting the Queen of the Sea, and learning more about the history of Lisbon.

I am hasting homeward through drear Mirkwood and the Saxon lands, to fight beside my king, even though we expect to see The Fall of Arthur.

In France from the 1950s to the 2000s with Annie Ernaux, The Years.

A woman's book filled with honesty. This is a somewhat generational book. She is a contemporary of mine and having lived through the same years, historical and sociological events enthralls me in reading about our times. Even though her story is a woman's story and very French in nature, hers is a universal, human story. A great writer.

Some writers transcend gender. She is a master.

A great description of the revolution that existed on college campuses around the world in the late 60s. Questioning authority, experimenting, an exciting time to have come of age in.

I am in Chicago becoming one of The Great Believers.

For a while I have traveled between Paris and New York to escape the clutches of The King in Yellow, and now I'm somewhere in Asia creating Invisible Cities for Kublai Khan.

I am in Paris working alongside Marie Curie, who most definitely has A Mind of Her Own.

The furnace has gone out, cold has invaded my sleep, and I am now by turns delighted and troubled by Arctic Dreams.

Crisscrossing the world like a good groupie hoping to run into No Walls and the Recurring Dream. A recurring dream with the Little Folksinger sounds good but really, no walls. And just to continue the musical theme, once that tour was over I jumped into the tour van with my favorite Tranny.

...and now back to China for my third pluck of The Plum in the Golden Vase. Volume three of five in this huge Classic of Chinese Literature.

I'm in Ibahernando, a small town in the Extremadura autonomous community of Spain, learning more about Javier Cercas's great uncle, who died as a young man during the Spanish Civil War, and the Lord of All the Dead whose military campaign to take control of the country cost hundreds of thousands of lives in less than three years.

I'm still in England, following Miss Silver to the Danger Point.
(In the US this book it's called "In the Balance" but the touchstones don't work for this edition.)

Back to Norway, as I continue My Struggle with big, long, multi-volume tomes. On the island of Tromøya with Book Three, reliving Karl Ove's Boyhood.

Wandering the deserts of Northern Africa, yearning for relief under The Sheltering Sky.

I am in Germany witnessing the intellectual and spiritual journey of Martin Buber in a biography written by Paul Mendes-Flohr. Buber was a bridge between several influences. Coming form a wealthy Polish-Jewish Orthodox family he turned against traditional religion as he began a lifelong search for the true spiritual influence for all humans.
A traveler in Hasidism, Sinology, Philosophy, Literature and Zionism among his friends were Herman Hesse, Richard Wilhelm, Carl Jung, Theodore Herzl, Chaim Weizmann, Max Brod and dozens more.

His I and Thou book became a cornerstone in his belief of the importance of true dialogue, empathy, and the tenet that it is better to listen than to talk.

Also in India being initiated into The Book of M.

I have been in Berlin, where I witnessed The Last Days of Hitler, after travelling between Portsmouth, London, Le Havre and Paris, with John Pearce On A Particular Service to the Crown.

Thence I returned to England to meet The Radleys , then headed to the capital to assist Selliers and Miss Silver in identifying the wearer of the Grey Mask.

Then in Japan Naoki Higashida taught me to Fall Down 7 Times, But Get Up 8

Still in England, I have said a temporary adieu to Miss Silver wrapped in The Chinese Shawl, and then spent A Midsummer Night in the Workhouse with Diana Athill.

Left North Africa to go to Malaysia where I will either be stalking or being stalked by The Night Tiger.

Have returned to London to psychoanalyse The Fractured Man.

I've spent a very long night in Japan in Haruki Murakami's After Dark with a girl who just wants to read, but a would-be boyfriend and a Chinese working girl just won't leave her in peace. I think someone is stuck in my TV.

I am off to Cleveland to hear WWII stories and will, of course, follow rule #1, that The Dead Drink First.
