The Calidore String Quartet open a curated series at St Mary's Church, Tetbury, with a folk-influenced quartet by Prokofiev and Beethoven's joyous harp quartet.

Recorded in March at St Marys' Church, Tetbury in Gloucestershire, the Calidore String Quartet play favourite works by Prokofiev and Beethoven, in the first of four curated concerts which the quartet, former Radio 3 New Generation Artists, gave as part of a Radio 3 Big Chamber Weekend, held in association with Tetbury Music Festival .

Introduced by Fiona Talkington.

Prokofiev: String Quartet no.2 Op.92
Beethoven: String Quartet, Op.74
The Calidore String Quartet
Jeffrey Myers, violin
Ryan Meehan, violin
Jeremy Berry, viola
Estelle Choi, cello

The Calidore String Quartet present two works of great heart and optimism, written in the shadow of war. Following Germany's war-time invasion of Russia, Prokofiev's second string quartet reflects the captivating folk tunes he heard while living in the Caucasus region, while Beethoven's Harp Quartet, one of his most light and romantic, could be attributed to being in love, rather more than Napoleon's bombardment of Vienna.

LSO St Luke's: Bruch and Vaughan Williams. Episode 4.

Fiona Talkington presents chamber music by Bruch and Vaughan Williams from LSO St Luke's in London, performed by the Nash Ensemble chamber group.

The UK's leading chamber group, the Nash Ensemble, celebrate two of the most tuneful of chamber music composers, Bruch and Vaughan Williams - and their little-known connection.

Vaughan Williams: Phantasy String Quintet
Bruch: Eight Pieces for clarinet, viola and piano (selection)
Vaughan Williams: Quintet in D major for clarinet, horn, violin, cello and piano (1898)
Nash Ensemble

In 1897 the young Englishman Ralph Vaughan Williams spent an enjoyable few months in Berlin studying with the renowned German composer Max Bruch. "Bruch encouraged me," Vaughan Williams recalled, "and I had never had much encouragement before." Bruch's official testimonial for Vaughan Williams calls him "a very good musician and a talented composer"; Vaughan Williams also remembered Bruch appreciating his "ve-ry o-riginaal ideeas" - though not his harmonies, which were "rather too originell". Hearing their music together, the delightful surprise is discovering how much they had in common.

Stravinsky Meets the Violin.

Live from Wigmore Hall, Ilya Gringolts plays some of Stravinsky's most tuneful and attractive works for violin. In the early 1930s, Stravinsky wrote two major works for Samuel Dushkin, the Violin Concerto and Duo Concertante. The two had collaborated closely, with Dushkin supplying helpful advice on violin technique. They soon wanted repertoire to perform together as a duo and Stravinsky accordingly re-cycled some of his older music. Apart from the numbers from The Firebird, Stravinsky's earliest major success, the rest of the music in today's programme was itself arranged from other composers. The Suite italienne began life as Pulcinella, re-workings of mainly 18th-century Italian music, and The Fairy's Kiss was an affectionate tribute to Tchaikovsky whose music struck such a resonant chord with Stravinsky. Introduced by Fiona Talkington. Igor Stravinsky: Suite italienne. Three movements from The Firebird. Ballade from The Fairy's Kiss. Divertimento from The Fairy's Kiss. Ilya Gringolts (violin), Peter Laul (piano).
