Ahead of tomorrow evening's Final of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2019, a focus on a previous winner of that feted title - the Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, with his final UK stage performance in the title role of Eugene Onegin, a performance recorded in 2015 from the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. Described by its conductor, Semyon Bychkov, as an opera about young people, for young people, Eugene Onegin is based on Alexander Pushkin's verse novel of the same name. In return for being spared a briny end, Idomeneo rashly promises Neptune that he will sacrifice the first human he sees on landing. Inevitably, that person is his son, Idamante. Idomeneo thinks he can forget his obligation but Neptune thinks otherwise and, to help jog his memory, sends a monster to ravage Crete. Philip Glass's Akhnaten from New York, starring counter-tenor Anthony Roth Constanzo as the Egyptian pharaoh who worshipped the sun, revolutionising his kingdom's ancient religious practices - with tragic consequences for him and his family. Death in Venice.

A new production of Death in Venice, featuring the Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, conducted by Richard Farnes. Based on a novella by Thomas Mann, the German writer Gustav von Aschenbach travels to Venice in search of creative inspiration, but his thoughts are distracted by a beautiful young Polish youth, with whom he becomes obsessed. Mark Padmore sings the troubled writer, and Gerald Finley the seven characters who appear throughout the opera to lead him to his eventual demise. Kate Molleson presents, and is joined in the box by Dr Lucy Walker from the Britten-Pears Foundation to discuss Britten's late great opera.
