Tim, in the LT staff blog article "Top Five Books of 2018", http://blog.librarything.com/main/2018/12/top-five-2018/, includes Christian Marek's In the land of a thousand gods among his top five.

It sounds like a "must read" to me, except that the one member's review of the book includes "there are in fact some 552 pages of type that can only be described as footnote size subscript, not including an appendix of 75 pages as well as a thick section of endnotes." That "552 pages of ... footnote size subscript" sounds like uncomfortable reading to one whose eyes are settling into increasingly strong reading glasses.

Before splashing out twenty-plus pounds on a copy, can someone with a copy say whether the review is over-egging it for dramatic effect, or whether it's a warning to be taken seriously.

Amazon has look inside on this book. If you compare that with the size of the book you should be able to figure out whether or not it is legible for you.
