Elizabeth Warren’s ‘likability’? The US media has learned nothing from 2016

...less than 24 hours after Warren had announced her bid, Politico published a story headlined “Warren battles the ghosts of Hillary”. They publicised the story with a widely derided tweet, asking: “How does Elizabeth Warren avoid a Clinton redux – written off as too unlikable before her campaign gets off the ground?”

I’ll tell you how Warren avoids a Clinton redux. It’s actually very simple: the media focuses on the issues the Massachusetts senator stands for instead of fixating on her “likability”. The media stops using “likability” as lazy shorthand for: “Is the US too misogynistic to vote in a female president?” The media stops perpetuating the narrative that powerful women are unlikable. The media starts treating her as a candidate, rather than a female candidate. ...

I'm with you on this. If a female candidate doesn't project strength and confidence, she's weak. If she does project strength and confidence, she's an unlikable bitch.

Remember when the 2016 election was in full swing and all the people were talking earnestly about how unlikeable Hillary Clinton was and when challenged on the obvious misogyny (the current President is hardly likable by any metric) the common answer was that they love Elizabeth Warren and so they can't be sexist.

Now that's changed and they find Warren unlikeable, and their usual choice for "acceptable woman who proves I'm not a giant misogynist" is Kamala Harris. Can't wait to see who replaces her when she announces that she's running.

A woman after my own heart! I'd give my library to see a Muslim Palestinian woman skin and scalp that orange pig.

Rashida Tlaib stands by vow to 'impeach the motherfucker'

Newly sworn-in Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib isn’t backing down from her remark Thursday that “we’re going to impeach the motherfucker”, speaking about Donald Trump.

In a statement Friday her office said: “Congresswoman Tlaib was elected to shake up Washington, not continue the status quo.”

It continued: “The Congresswoman absolutely believes he needs to be impeached and ... will not stay silent.”

Tlaib added herself more succinctly on Twitter: “I will always speak truth to power. #unapologeticallyMe”

I picked up Down Girl because sturlington mentioned it in another thread on here and it is covers this extensively.
