Seven years, and I haven't got it down yet. Arbiters and enforcers, please remind me. [trembling in fearful anticipation]
2pgmcc
At seven years you start by squaring the number of years, squaring the result, adding your height in inches and adding two zeroes to the end. That will give you the number of books to be acquired.
HAPPY THINGAVERSARY!
YAY!
HAPPY THINGAVERSARY!
YAY!
3Taphophile13
I believe it's a book for each year plus one, so that would make eight books you need to acquire? When the number is a dozen or more that can get expensive. Maybe it's the number of books you need to read? Or at least add to your catalog? I'm sure an enforcer will be along shortly to set us straight. They can always sense weakness.
Anyway, Happy Thingaversary.
Anyway, Happy Thingaversary.

Whew. Thank goodness. It could have been so much worse. But luckily I've lost about an inch in height since I signed on, so that's all right.
Many thanks for the good wishes.
Also, now that I'm starting to remember, I think there's a multiplier for the credit I get when I reduce my inventory. And I did do that yesterday, by five units. So--divide by 625, right? Also don't we get credit for book bullets successfully delivered since the last observance?
Nice enforcers. [pat pat] Will it be brie or some nice Jarlsberg?

Marissa, you are correct. I was mistaken. One does not square the numbers for a 7th Thingaversary, but raise them to the power of 7. 7 is a magical number.
I wonder if there is enough space in California for Meredy to store all the books she has to acquire.

My thingaversary is just in another weeThk or two. I can't remember how many years I have to start with but it might be 12 at this point. I need to do the square of that, right? And then add my height? Or is there a step in between that I've missed?
Will the enforcers allow a grace period, since delivery times across the board are being stretched. Can I get away with just a list of the titles I expect to collect? Or do I have to do more?
As a follow-up, here are some of the titles that i'm hoping will get to me eventually (don't know if you've noticed it but some publication dates have been pushed later into the fall):
The Empire of Gold S.A. Chakraborty
The Widening Stain W. Bolingbroke Johnson
Clutch of Constables by Ngaio Marsh
Further edited to add that it's more like 14 years apparently and my thingaversary is TOMORROW, not mid-July. I can feel the heavy breath of the enforcers on the back of my neck even as I type that.

There aren't many bookshops here and most of those have a very small fiction section. Books Kinokuniya is my best option (although they've just closed a branch and are down to 3 now) but it's getting harder to find fantasy books that I want to buy. I could go with Kindle but I think my TBR percentage on my e-books is even higher than for my physical books.

I have been bad recently Mrs Lee but I did buy my son a book last week if that helps. I'd forgotten the love for cheese here. Do the enforcers track whether one has kept up with the cataloging end of things? This is not technically to do with my Thingaversary which was months back, but I'm feeling a tad uneasy.
I have inadvertently overlooked cataloging of books that have come into this house for possibly as long as eight months -- so for the duration of the pandemic in this country. Some things have been included in my library here; others have not. I am concerned that I might just have to go through all the 2020 orders from all the bookshops in order to get things up to date. Not to mention working out all the the titles that I might have purchased but subsequently passed on to my local Little Free Library. (You know, the little bird-house shelters with shelves where you pick up a book or leave a book as you may choose? And I think at least two boxes of books went off to a Goodwill when they lifted the initial lockdown.)
This is an awkward situation and I haven't the foggiest notion of the appropriate protocols. I mean, this may entail emptying the shelves entirely and beginning all over again.

Ooops! I have just realised that my Thingaversary was 12 days ago. (Since I was only just getting back online at the time, I didn't notice. And yes, I know that is no excuse.)
Since I am unlikely to be able to get out today, and Tier 4 lockdown starts on Boxing Day, I am unlikely to be able to do anything to appease the Enforcers. (I cannot make online orders on borrowed tablet.)
I know no excuse will be adequate. But, on the plus side - they are not going to be able to get to me either!
Although what the accumulated penalty will be when this is over, I dread to think...

There's a donation box at the library, if they ever let us back in. Hospitals used to welcome used books. Some jails also accept book donations, although not the ones around here.
There's also neighborhood Little Free Libraries, Goodwill, and in some cases just a box at the curb that says "Free."

>118 Meredy: The last few times that I have been in hospital, I have been horrified at how much the library facilities have run down since even 10 years ago.
So, I tried to donate the books that I had brought with me, and was told that they were not allowed to accept second-hand books. (I had been admitted after a fall, not with anything infectious.)
Hygiene considerations were cited as the reason for discontinuing hospital libraries in favour of over-bed individual TVs, which operate on a £10/day pay-to-view basis. Which are fine if you are in for an operation and will be home in a couple of days. But for elderly patients on long-stay wards, not so much.
I met a lot of very bored elderly ladies, whose bodies were failing (but not necessarily their minds). A TV programme requires concentration for a specified duration; with a book you can choose your own intervals.
So although book donations would probably be welcomed by the end-users, they may not be permitted to receive them.

For once I have remembered my Thingaversary on my Thingaversary. Today is the 15th anniversary of my joining LibraryThing. I just did a quick check and it appears I have catalogued 23 new book acquisitions since January 1st, and that is without having catalogued three books that I received last week and not counting the Raymond Chandler books that I catalogued last week but have had in the house for years. I feel safe from the enforcers.
Of course, if I am running at approximately 25 new books a quarter I will soon need to clear another room to make space for more bookcases.

Then, in case they do show up, be sure to have several names of people who forgot to prepare for their Thingaversary ready to show them so they will be distracted and go after those people. Then you can have all the cheese.

My 16th Thingaversary is coming up in 6 days! I won't buy 17 books to completely satisfy the enforcers but I hope they won't be too harsh. I have started acquisitions, though.
I will count two books that arrived very recently:
1. When Sorrows Come by Seanan McGuire
2. Scandal in Babylon by Barbara Hambly.
Also, today I walked over to pick up a special order at a local bookstore and ended up buying two more books there and one at a used book store that I passed on the way home. So:
3. What's the Matter with Mary Jane? by Candas Jane Dorsey. So new that the touchstone isn't working yet. I will try to fix it later :)
4. Plants of Alberta : Trees, Shrubs, Wildflowers, Ferns, Aquatic Plants & Grasses by France Royer and Richard Dickinson.
5. The Midnight Bargain by C. L. Polk.
6. In the Company of Others by Julie E. Czerneda.
It is possible that I will not acquire any others, although I do have some pre-orders that are due to arrive in October and November.

Here are the two sets of bookends I purchased. I took some "action" photos of them on my bookshelves, but of course they turned sideways when I tried to upload them to LT. I don't have time or patience to work that sh*t out. (Sorry, stuff like that is so frustrating to me) So if you want a kink in your neck, you can look in my member gallery and see them.

>226 -pilgrim-: They were my late great-aunt's; one of the things I made sure Mum got from the estate sale in the 1970s, and I've kept them ever since. I took these on my Samsung phone, emailed them to my HP (I think) laptop, downloaded them, resized them, even moved them into a file. I went back into that file and rotated the picture, then uploaded them again with the exact same result. That's when the expletives took over and I decided life is too short. ;)

The old Penguins are de Maupassant in my Literature collection.
I really must go through the sitting room bookcases - the SF/F/W collections have been gone through several times since we moved, and Paul's books have been merged with mine. We haven't done that for general fiction, non-fiction and literature, and there's a bunch of Paul's non-fiction in the spare room.

>236 humouress: Weird! It seems to work for me - photo taken on iPhone or iPad, Airdropped to MacBook, opened, rotated then saved in Preview, uploaded to LT.
If you're on Windows, try opening in Paint or whatever freebie comes with Windows and doing the same. I don't know if Graphic Converter is available for Windows; I use that on my Macs (it's nag ware). I can't test that workflow - my only working Windows machine is the work laptop and I have to email pics to that (like I have to email files to the Mac if I want to print them) - everything is locked down and print is disabled for W@H.
I seem to recall the issue is that the picture metadata isn't parsing correctly on LT when the picture is taken on an iOS (or other mobile) device, and the open, rotate, save process changes the metadata so it can be parsed correctly. I suspect it's to do with the orientation of the mobile device - the metadata is using the standard orientation of the device instead of the orientation used to take the picture.
I am guessing your picture above was taken with your device held in landscape mode - and your device would normally be held as though the right-hand side of the picture was the bottom of the device (rotated 90 degrees anti-clockwise). If you take the picture with the device held as if you were making a call or the home button at the bottom, does the picture still upload rotated if you do a straight upload?
It might be interesting to test this - hold your device as though it's the factory setting (portrait, with the home button at the bottom for a tablet, or as if you are making a call on a phone), take a picture, rotate 90 degrees clockwise, take picture and so on...

My 14th Thingaversary is October 28 - either today or tomorrow, depending on your time zone. I've gone a bit overboard on book-buying lately, so I've easily met my suggested number, but in my own defense most of them are ebooks, and they were mostly on sale or inexpensive. Anyway, thanks tardis, for getting me hooked!

It's my 3,650th Thing-unaversary tomorrow - I think - inasmuch as it will be the last day of my tenth year on LibraryThing.
However, as I joined on 29 Feb. 2012, it won't be my third Thingaversary for another two years. So apologies to anyone who thinks this message is OT.
And a Happy Thing-unaversary to anyone else having a significant Thing-unaversary!

Of course, cheese and wine can be used to avert their wrath. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and fruit juices work too.

I missed my 18th Thingaversary! It was 2 days ago. I haven't had time to celebrate anyway - too much to do in the garden and with the harvest. The weather could take a nosedive into winter at any time, so I need to get it done while I can.
I haven't acquired the traditional 18+1 books, and I likely won't, but there are some exciting releases in October and November (new Murderbot! New St Mary's! and more!) so I feel I'm keeping my end up by buying those.

My 17th thingaversary is next week. I agree that it's time to change the rules a little. :)
304clamairy
So there never really were rules. They weren't even guidelines. It was just an excuse for people who really wanted acquire or buy a bunch of books to do just that. (Or to perhaps use an excuse for those who had to explain to a spouse or loved one why they came home from the bookshop/booksale with a box.)
This past Thingaversary I made a donation to my local library instead buying even more books for my Kindle. I think I have at least 300 books on there I have yet to read, maybe more. Not to mention the 1,500+ in my house that I have yet to read.
So here's the new 'rule' that I propose. Do whatever makes you happiest for your Thingiversary.
